An innovative container for WEEE collection and transport: Details and effects following the adoption

The content of hazardous components in Waste arising from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a major concern that urges governments and industry to take measures to ensure proper treatment and disposal. Thus, the European Union issued directives to encourage reuse, recycling and other proper forms of recovery of such waste while companies and academics are still studying methods and technologies for optimizing recovery processes. This paper presents an analysis of the logistics process assuring the correct collection, handling, transportation and storing of WEEE. The experience comes from an Italian WEEE treatment plant (TRED Carpi S.r.l.) where a new kind of container has been introduced in order to improve the logistics system. An evaluation framework is described and used in order to compare different system configurations and assess the advantages emerging from adopting proper equipments for WEEE transport and handling.     

A theory‐based measure of conflict management strategies in the workplace

Conflict management influences individual wellbeing, group performance and organizational effectiveness. This research examined the psychometric qualities of two versions of the newly developed test for conflict handling. The lean version (Study 1 and 2) included problem solving, forcing, yielding and avoiding as distinct conflict management strategies, and the expanded version (Study 3) also included compromising. A negotiation study (Study 1) showed substantial convergence between self‐reports, opponent‐reports and observer rated behavior for problem solving, forcing and yielding, but not for avoiding. In Study 2 and Study 3 the psychometric properties were examined of the lean and the expanded version, respectively. Confirmatory factor analyses revealed good to excellent psychometric qualities of both versions of the scale. We conclude that the scale is a parsimonious, flexible and valid instrument to assess conflict management strategies at work. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

The Determination of Heavy Metals in the Ligurian Sea. III. Distribution of Copper, Iron, and Nickel in the 0-200 Metre Layer in Open Sea

Dissolved Cu, Fe and Ni were determined in sea water samples from 9 stations in the Ligurian Sea located along the two traverses Imperia-Capo Corso and Nice-Calvi and at depths between 0 and 200 m. The samples were preconcentrated from small volumes of sea water by complexation with ammonium pyrrolidine-dithiocarbammate (APDC), extraction with CCl₄ and determination by AAS with electrothermal atomisation. The geographical distribution shows that in the central part of the inner traverse there is a maximum of Cu and Fe concentration; the vertical distribution shows no significant depletion of the dissolved elements in the epithalassa.

The results allow for a first approach to the more general problem of the distribution of the trace elements in the Ligurian Sea.
