Fetal echocardiography was used to identify a cardiac rhabdomyoma in the second trimester. The combination of this finding with a maternal history of Tuberous Sclerosis allowed the patient and her family to make a more educated decision regarding termination of the pregnancy. Post mortem examination of the fetus confirmed the prenatal findings. This case report demonstrates the importance of ultrasound evaluation of the fetus at risk of recurrence of a genetic syndrome in which one or more anatomical defects might be seen.  相似文献

Cell nitrogen quotas and uptake rates following ammonium additions were measured during ammonium-limited growth transients obtained by starving batch and chemostat cultures of Thalassiosira pseudonana (Clone 3 H). During starvation, cell quotas decreased by more than 50% in batch cultures. In chemostat cultures, the drop in cell quota during starvation decreased with dilution rate, from more than 50% at 1.45 d-1, to less than 10% at 0.22 d-1. Minimal levels of 3 to 4×10-2 pg-at. N cell-1 were reached after 24 h starvation in both batch and chemostat cultures. Uptake rates over the first minute of perturbation experiments were 3 times the long-term (10 to 30 min) rates. In batch cultures, specific uptake rates increased from 4 d-1 to 20 d-1 after 24 h starvation. Uptake rates per cell were independent of starvation time and dilution rate in chemostat cultures, but lower in non-starved batch cultures. The implications of these data for models of phytoplankton growth are discussed: the data support models which predict a depression in average growth rates when diatoms encounter microscale patches in oligotrophic environments.  相似文献

The German EPER, TNO, Belgium, LandGEM, and Scholl Canyon models for estimating methane production were compared to methane recovery rates for 35 Canadian landfills, assuming that 20% of emissions were not recovered. Two different fractions of degradable organic carbon (DOCf) were applied in all models. Most models performed better when the DOCf was 0.5 compared to 0.77. The Belgium, Scholl Canyon, and LandGEM version 2.01 models produced the best results of the existing models with respective mean absolute errors compared to methane generation rates (recovery rates + 20%) of 91%, 71%, and 89% at 0.50 DOCf and 171%, 115%, and 81% at 0.77 DOCf. The Scholl Canyon model typically overestimated methane recovery rates and the LandGEM version 2.01 model, which modifies the Scholl Canyon model by dividing waste by 10, consistently underestimated methane recovery rates; this comparison suggested that modifying the divisor for waste in the Scholl Canyon model between one and ten could improve its accuracy. At 0.50 DOCf and 0.77 DOCf the modified model had the lowest absolute mean error when divided by 1.5 yielding 63 ± 45% and 2.3 yielding 57 ± 47%, respectively. These modified models reduced error and variability substantially and both have a strong correlation of r = 0.92.  相似文献

A 4-year study (1972–1976) determined long-term trends of organochlorine residues (DDT, DDE, DDD, PCB's, mirex) and trawl-susceptible organisms in a shallow, river-dominated estuary in North Florida (Apalachicola Bay, USA). Moderate levels of such compounds were found in various species prior to the restricted use of DDT in 1972. A subsequent precipitous decline in organochlorine besidues was attributed to decreased upland usage, major flushing of the river basin in early 1973, and various factors associated with estuarine function. No mirex was found in sediments or aquatic organisms. Apparently, the half-life of organochlorines is relatively short in this bay system. Various statistical methods were used to test the relationships of different physico-chemical and biological parameters. During the 4-year study period, seasonal river flow fluctuations dominated water color, turbidity, salinity, nutrients (NO3), chlorophyll a, and the temporal succession of fishes in the bay. Certain long-term trends of fish associations were noted; relative dominance of key fish species declined and stabilized while bay-wide species richness and diversity increased with time. Qualitative changes in species representation determined the long-term pattern of community variability. This was consonant with a distinctive fish fauna during the first year of sampling. The bay anchovy Anchoa mitchilli was dominant during 9 of the first 12 monts of the project; this influenced the time-related changes in community indices. Temporally clustered fish associations reflected the importance of river flow in the estuarine environment. Direct correlation of fish distribution with the rapid disappearance of organochlorine compounds was complicated by aperiodic natural phenomena such as storms and river fluctuations. Population and community trends appeared consistent with other studies showing similar patterns of dominance of stress-resistant fish populations and related changes in community parameters. In this case, the relatively predictable annual succession of fish associations allowed an appraisal of key forcing functions. Due to the high level of seasonal and annual biological variability in this estuary, there were some problems in the application of linear statistical models to the data base. Although the long-term trend of relative species representation is useful as an index of stress, new techniques are needed to analyze extensive field data so that functions such as trophic interactions are included in the estimation of causal relationships. There are indications that such effects could be related to the impact of organochlorine compounds on estuarine systems.  相似文献

The acorn barnacle Chthamalus montagui can present strong variation in shell morphology, ranging from flat conic to a highly bent form, caused by a substantial overgrowth of the rostrum plate. Shell shape distribution was investigated between January and May 2004 from geographical to microhabitat spatial scales along the western coast of Britain. Populations studied in the north (Scotland and Isle of Man) showed a higher degree of shell variation compared to those in the south (Wales and south-west England). In the north, C. montagui living at lower tidal levels and in proximity to the predatory dogwhelk, Nucella lapillus, were more bent in profile. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine behavioural responses, and vulnerability of bent and conic barnacles to predation by N. lapillus. Dogwhelks did not attack one morphotype more than the other, but only 15 % of attacks on bent forms were successful compared to 75 % in conic forms. Dogwhelk effluent reduced the time spent feeding by C. montagui (11 %), but there was no significant difference between conic and bent forms. Examination of barnacle morphology indicated a trade-off in investment in shell structure and feeding appendages associated with being bent, but none with egg or somatic tissue mass. These results are consistent with C. montagui showing an induced defence comparable to that found in its congeners Chthamalus anisopoma and Chthamalus fissus on the Pacific coast of North America, but further work to demonstrate inducibility is required.  相似文献

Environmental regulatory standards are intended to protect human health and environmental welfare. Current standards are based on scientific and policy considerations but appear to lack rigorous statistical foundations and may have unintended regulatory consequences. We examine current and proposed U.S. environmental regulatory standards for ozone from the standpoint of their formulation and performance within a statistical hypothesis testing framework. We illustrate that the standards can be regarded as representing constraints on a percentile of the ozone distribution, where the percentile involved depends on the defined length of ozone season and the constraint is stricter in regions with greater variability. A hypothesis testing framework allows consideration of error rates (probability of false declaration of violation and compliance) and we show that the existing statistics on which the standards are based can be improved upon in terms of bias and variance. Our analyses also raise issues relating to network design and the possibilities of defining a regionally based standard that acknowledges and accounts for spatial and temporal variability in the ozone distribution.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake and ammonia excretion rates, and body carbon and nitrogen contents were measured in krill (Euphausia superba) and eight other zooplankton species collected during November–December 1982 in the Prydz Bay, Antarctica. From these data, metabolic O:N ratios (by atoms), body C:N ratios (by weight) and daily metabolic losses of body carbon and nitrogen were calculated as a basis from which to evaluate seasonal differences in metabolism and nutritional condition. Comparison of the present data with mid-summer (January) data revealed that early-summer E. superba were characterized by higher metabolic O:N ratios (58.7 to 103, compared with 15.9 to 17.5 for mid-summer individuals). Higher O:N ratios of early-summer E. superba resulted largely from reduced ammonia excretion rates and, to a lesser degree, from slightly increased oxygen uptake rates. Body C:N ratios of E. superba were low in early-summer (3.8 to 4.2) compared with mid-summer krill (4.1 to 4.7) due to lowered body-carbon contents in the former (42.6 to 43.6% compared with 43.2 to 47.5% dry weight of midsummer individuals); gravid females formed an exception, since no seasonal differences in body elemental composition were detected for these. No significant changes in water content (75.3 to 81.4% wet wt) and nitrogen content (9.9 to 11.1% dry wt) in E. superba were evident between the two seasons. Seasonal differences in metabolic rates and elemental composition were less pronounced in a salp (Salpa thompsoni), but a higher metabolic O:N ratio occurred in early-summer individuals. Interspecific comparison of the seven remaining zooplankton species studied with twelve species from mid-summer zooplankton investigated in an earlier study indicated that higher metabolic O:N ratios in early-summer are characteristic not only of herbivore/filter-feeders, but also of some carnivores/omnivores. No relationship between metabolic O:N ratios and body C:N ratios was apparent either intraspecifically or interspecifically, within or between early-summer and mid-summer seasons.  相似文献

Quantifying sessile marine invertebrate recruitment often requires destructive sampling or extrapolation from artificial substrata, the latter introducing the danger of artifacts. We measured intertidal mussel recruitment into mussel beds and into brushes at three-month intervals for five years across 3,200 km of southern Africa and determined substrata effects on recruitment rate. Recruitment into mussel beds showed a strong, coast-wide gradient, with high recruitment on the West coast, diminishing on the South coast, and increasing slightly on the East coast. At scales of 10 s of km, brushes reflected natural temporal recruitment variability, with a strong significant linear correlation between recruitment into brushes and into mussel beds. However, the relationship became semi-logarithmic when comparing among locations at a scale of 100 s of km. Artificial substrata thus reflect local natural settlement well but may be a poor indicator of it when spatial scales are large, particularly when mussel bed topography is complex, or localities have very different recruitment densities.  相似文献
