The prenatal diagnosis of a presacral (type IV) sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is described. The initial ultrasound appearance was suggestive of a lower urinary tract obstruction, but further ultrasonic examination and radiological imaging using contrast medium led to the diagnosis of SCT. The overall objective of this project was to determine the cost and impacts of Hg control using sorbent injection into a Compact Hybrid Particulate Collector (COHPAC) at Alabama Power's Gaston Unit 3. This test is part of a program funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) to obtain the necessary information to assess the costs of controlling Hg from coal-fired utility plants that do not have scrubbers for SO2 control. The economics will be developed based on various levels of Hg control. Gaston Unit 3 was chosen for testing because COHPAC represents a cost-effective retrofit option for utilities with existing electrostatic precipitators (ESPs). COHPAC is an EPRI-patented concept that places a high air-to-cloth ratio baghouse downstream of an existing ESP to improve overall particulate collection efficiency. Activated carbons were injected upstream of COHPAC and downstream of the ESP to obtain performance and operational data. Results were very encouraging, with up to 90% removal of Hg for short operating periods using powdered activated carbon (PAC). During the long-term tests, an average Hg removal efficiency of 78% was measured. The PAC injection rate for the long-term tests was chosen to maintain COHPAC cleaning frequency at less than 1.5 pulses/bag/hr. 相似文献

Climate projections at relevant temporal and spatial scales are essential to assess potential future climate change impacts on climatologically diverse regions such as the northeast United States. Here, we show how both statistical and dynamical downscaling methods applied to relatively coarse-scale atmosphere-ocean general circulation model output are able to improve simulation of spatial and temporal variability in temperature and precipitation across the region. We then develop high-resolution projections of future climate change across the northeast USA, using IPCC SRES emission scenarios combined with these downscaling methods. The projections show increases in temperature that are larger at higher latitudes and inland, as well as the potential for changing precipitation patterns, particularly along the coast. While the absolute magnitude of change expected over the coming century depends on the sensitivity of the climate system to human forcing, significantly higher increases in temperature and in winter precipitation are expected under a higher as compared to lower scenario of future emissions from human activities. 相似文献

An in situ toxicity and bioaccumulation assessment approach is described to assess stressor exposure and effects in surface waters (low and high flow), the sediment-water interface, surficial sediments and pore waters (including groundwater upwellings). This approach can be used for exposing species, representing major functional and taxonomic groups. Pimephales promelas, Daphnia magna, Ceriodaphnia dubia, Hyalella azteca, Hyalella sp., Chironomus tentans, Lumbriculus variegatus, Hydra attenuatta, Hexagenia sp. and Baetis tibialis were successfully used to measure effects on survival, growth, feeding, and/or uptake. Stressors identified included chemical toxicants, suspended solids, photo-induced toxicity, indigenous predators, and flow. Responses varied between laboratory and in situ exposures in many cases and were attributed to differing exposure dynamics and sample-processing artifacts. These in situ exposure approaches provide unique assessment information that is complementary to traditional laboratory-based toxicity and bioaccumulation testing and reduce the uncertainties of extrapolating from the laboratory to field responses. 相似文献

Summary Many insects oviposit on food patches (e. g., hosts) that represent a finite resource. Competition for food may occur among the developing progeny with the effect of reducing their survivorship, size, and/or some other aspect of fitness. Here a simple, but general, equation is given that captures tures some of the possible relationships between the number of progeny on a host and their fitness. This in turn specifies the clutch size that maximizes the fitness of a female ovipositing on a single host (the Lack clutch size). The equation is then used in an optimal foraging type model to specify optimal clutch sizes when a female searches for and oviposits on a series of hosts. The model makes three general predictions: (1) for a constant host size (or value), optimal clutch size varies directly with the inter-host search time, (2) for a constant search time, optimal clutch size varies directly with host value, and, (3) females should never lay more than the Lack clutch size. The model is then extended to include optimal clutch size in superparasitism. 相似文献

Laboratory-cultured larvae of the black chiton Katharina tunicata (Wood), collected from central California in May and June of 1979 and 1980, settled preferentially on the encrusting coralline alga Lithothamnium sp. Metamorphosis, which involves the loss of the prototrochal ciliary band, occurred within a period of 2.5 h after larvae began crawling upon the alga. In response to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at a concentration of 10-6 M, the lecithotrophic trochophore larvae ceased swimming and settled rapidly. Developmental metamorphosis did not follow settlement in the absence of encrusting coralline alga. However, when both GABA and Lithothamnium sp. were present, larval metamorphosis occurred within 2 h of settlement. Significantly different rates of settlement exist for sibling larvae of different ages; 12 d-old larvae responded more rapily and in greater numbers to treatment with GABA than 10 d-old larvae. Specimens of 21 species of dorid nudibranchs were collected off Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in 1984, and extracts were assayed against a variety of test organisms (bacteria, fungi, crustacean nauplii, a fish and a mammal). Antimicrobial activity was present in extracts of 80% of the 21 species assayed and in each of the five families investigated (Chromodorididae, Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae, Dorididae, and Dendrodorididae). This result adds the families Aegeridae, Phyllidiidae and Dendrodorididae to those with species known to possess such activity. Extracts of 18 of the 21 species possessed ichthyotoxins. This result adds the families Aegeridae, Dorididae and Dendrodorididae to those with species known to possess such activity. Respondent experience (i.e., a respondent's information set) has long been suspected to influence contingent valuation estimates of environmental values. We assess the influence of experience by explicitly modeling the relationship between respondent experience and both fitted individual resource values and the conditional variance of these estimated values. Using three different joint specifications for experience and WTP—normal/censored-normal, Poisson/censored-normal, and zero-inflated Poisson/censored-normal—we find discrete jumps in resource values as experience increases from zero and that more-experienced respondents have smaller conditional variances. Simulation of arbitrary levels of experience allows standardization of the amount of information when developing welfare estimates. 相似文献

For polygynous mammals with no paternal care, the number of offspring sired is often the sole measure of male reproductive
success. The potential for polygyny is highest when resources or other environmental factors such as restricted breeding sites
force females to aggregate. In these circumstances, males compete intensely for females and mating success may vary greatly
among males, further intensifying selection for those traits that confer an advantage in reproduction. Hence, determinants
of male success in competition for females are likely to be under strong sexual selection. Paternity analysis was used in
conjunction with measures of age, site fidelity, and behavior during the breeding season to assess variance in male breeding
success in Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) breeding at Turtle Rock, McMurdo Sound (77.727S, 166.85E) between 1997 and 2000. Paternity could be assigned to 177 pups
at relaxed or 80% confidence level or 111 pups at strict or 95% confidence levels. Weddell seals at Turtle Rock show a modest
degree of polygyny with the greatest number of pups sired by any individual male in a single season equalling 5 or ∼10% of
the pups born. Over four consecutive years, most (89.2%) males sired at least one pup. In a generalized linear model (GLM),
age and the age first seen at the study site as an adult were unrelated to mating success, but adult experience, either site-specific
or elsewhere in McMurdo Sound, over the reproductive life span of males explained nearly 40% of variance in total mating success
with 80% confidence and 24% of variance at 95% confidence. While learning where females are likely to be may enhance male
reproductive success, aquatic mating reduces the ability of males to monopolize females, and thereby increases equity in mating
