This paper explores how earthquake scientists conceptualise earthquake prediction, particularly given the conviction of six earthquake scientists for manslaughter (subsequently overturned) on 22 October 2012 for having given inappropriate advice to the public prior to the L'Aquila earthquake of 6 April 2009. In the first study of its kind, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with 17 earthquake scientists and the transcribed interviews were analysed thematically. The scientists primarily denigrated earthquake prediction, showing strong emotive responses and distancing themselves from earthquake ‘prediction’ in favour of ‘forecasting’. Earthquake prediction was regarded as impossible and harmful. The stigmatisation of the subject is discussed in the light of research on boundary work and stigma in science. The evaluation reveals how mitigation becomes the more favoured endeavour, creating a normative environment that disadvantages those who continue to pursue earthquake prediction research. Recommendations are made for communication with the public on earthquake risk, with a focus on how scientists portray uncertainty.  相似文献

Illegal transfer of wildlife has 2 main purposes: trade and scientific research. Trade is the most common, whereas scientific research is much less common and unprofitable, yet still important. Biopiracy in science is often neglected despite that many researchers encounter it during their careers. The use of illegally acquired specimens is detected in different research fields, from scientists bioprospecting for new pharmacological substances, to taxonomists working on natural history collections, to researchers working in zoos, aquariums, and botanical gardens. The practice can be due to a lack of knowledge about the permit requirements in different countries or, probably most often, to the generally high level of bureaucracy associated with rule compliance. Significant regulatory filters to avoid biopiracy can be provided by different stakeholders. Natural history collection hosts should adopt strict codes of conduct; editors of scientific publications should require authors to declare that all studied specimens were acquired legally and to cite museum catalog numbers as guarantee of best practices. Scientific societies should actively encourage publication in peer-reviewed journals of work in which specimens collected from the wild were used. The International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature could require newly designated types based on recently collected specimens to be accompanied by statements of deposition in recognized scientific or educational institutions. We also propose the creation of an online platform that gathers information about environmental regulations and permits required for scientific activities in different countries and respective responsible governmental agencies and the simplification of the bureaucracy related to regulating scientific activities. This would make regulations more agile and easier to comply with. The global biodiversity crisis means data need to be collected ever faster, but biopiracy is not the answer and undermines the credibility of science and researchers. It is critical to find a modus vivendi that promotes compliance with regulations and scientific progress.  相似文献

Soil contamination by trace elements (TEs) is a problem of great concern since the industrial revolution. However, not all TEs are essentially toxic, and several micronutrients such as boron (B) play essential roles during plant development and, in this case, B acts in plants as a structural element. Soil B levels above 3.0 mg dm–3 may be toxic to many plants and the greatest input of B to the environment occurs through the anthropic way. An environmentally promising alternative is phytoremediation, in which contaminant‐tolerant plants are used to remove or stabilize TEs in soils. Therefore, this work has been carried out to aim C. mucunoides’ tolerance to increasing B concentrations and its potential as a phytoremediator. We found out that C. mucunoides tolerates B doses up to 480 mg dm?3, the B uptaken is transported at a 1:1 ratio between root and shoot, suggesting that C. mucunoides can be used as a phytostabilizer and phytoextractor due to its potential to be used in phytoremediation techniques because it can tolerate toxic concentrations of B.  相似文献

Condensed tannins can be found in various parts of many plants. Unlike lignin there has been little study of their fate as they enter the soil organic matter pool and their influence on nutrient cycling, especially through their protein-binding properties. We extracted and characterized tannin-rich fractions from humus collected in 1998 from a black spruce [Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton et al.] forest in Canada where a previous study (1995) showed high levels (3.8% by weight) of condensed tannins. A reference tannin purified from black spruce needles was characterized by solution 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a pure procyanidin with mainly cis stereochemistry and an average chain length of four to five units. The colorimetric proanthocyanidin (PA) assay, standardized against the black spruce tannin, showed that both extracted humus fractions had higher tannin contents than the original humus (2.84% and 11.17% vs. 0.08%), and accounted for 32% of humus tannin content. Consistent with the results from the chemical assay, the aqueous fraction showed higher tannin signals in the 13C cross-polarization and magic-angle spinning (CPMAS) NMR spectrum than the emulsified one. As both tannin-rich humus fractions were depleted in N and high in structures derived from lignin and cutin, they did not have properties consistent with recaldtrant tannin-protein complexes proposed as a mechanism for N sequestration in humus. Further studies are needed to establish if tannin-protein structures in humus can be detected or isolated, or if tannins contribute to forest management problems observed in these ecosystems by binding to and slowing down the activity of soil enzymes.  相似文献

The toxicity of aluminium (Al) to fish in acidic waters has been well documented. It was therefore expected that Al toxicity would be significant in fish communities in Gadjarrigamarndah (Gadji) Creek, a seasonally flowing stream in tropical northern Australia. This creek receives acidic groundwater containing elevated concentrations of Al from earlier land irrigation of treated mine tailings water from the former Nabarlek uranium mine. It was hypothesised that Al toxicity was reduced by high levels of silica (Si) in the water, and the subsequent formation of Al-silicate complexes. This prompted a laboratory assessment of the toxicity of Gadji Creek water to sac-fry of the native fish, Mogurnda mogurnda, followed by more detailed investigation of the toxicity of Al and the influence of Si in reducing Al toxicity. No mortality of M. mogurnda sac-fry was observed in two toxicity tests using Gadji Creek water collected in August 1997 and September 1998. The majority of Al (80-95%) was calculated to be complexed with humic substances and sulfate, with < 1% being complexed with silicate. Assessment of the influence of silica on the acute toxicity of Al in the absence of natural organic complexants (i.e. in reconstituted freshwater, pH 5) revealed that Si reduced Al toxicity. As the molar ratio of Si:Al was increased, the percent survival of M. mogurnda sac-fry increased until there was no significant (P > 0.05) difference from the controls. However, speciation modelling again predicted that little (< 3%) Al complexed with silicate, with the speciation and bioavailability of Al remaining constant as the molar ratio of Si:Al increased. Therefore, the original hypothesis that Al-silicate complexes in solution reduced the toxicity of Al to M. mogurnda could not be supported. This potential mechanism, and an alternative hypothesis, that Si competes with Al for binding sites at the fish gill surface, requires further investigation.  相似文献

In environmental risk assessments the question has to be answered, whether risk reduction measures are necessary in order to protect the environment. If the combination of natural and anthropogenic sources of a chemical substance leads to an unacceptable risk, the man-made emissions have to be reduced. In this case the proportions of the anthropogenic and natural emissions have to be quantified. Difficulties and possible solutions are discussed in the scope of the OECD- and EU-risk assessments of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and tetrachloroethylene.In the atmosphere, TCA is formed by photo-oxidative degradation of tetrachloroethylene (PER) and 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The available data on atmospheric chemistry indicate that tetrachloroethylene is the more important pre-cursor. With its high water solubility and low volatility, TCA is adsorbed onto aerosol particles and precipitated during rainfalls. Extended monitoring in rainwater confirmed the global distribution of airborne TCA. TCA reaches soils by dry and wet deposition. In addition formation of TCA from tetrachloroethylene in plants was observed. Consequently, high concentrations were detected in needles, leaves and in forest soil especially in mountain regions.The effect assessment revealed that plants exposed via soil are the most sensitive species compared to other terrestrial organisms. A PNECsoil of 2.4 microg/kg dw was derived from a long-term study with pine and spruce seedlings. When this PNEC is compared with the measured concentrations of TCA in soil, in certain regions a PEC/PNEC ratio >1 is obtained. This clearly indicates a risk to the terrestrial ecosystem, with the consequence that risk reduction measures are deemed necessary.To quantify the causes of the high levels of TCA in certain soils, and to investigate the geographical extent of the problem, intensive and widespread monitoring of soil, air and rainwater for TCA and tetrachloroethylene would be necessary to be able to perform a full mass balance study at an appropriate number of sites. In addition, measurements of the 14C content in TCA isolated from soil could clarify whether a significant proportion of the TCA occurs from natural sources. The possible formation of TCA in soil can also be tested by incubation of isotope enriched inorganic chloride with subsequent mass spectrometry of TCA.  相似文献

Soil moisture content and temperature in a contaminated soil biopile equipped with immobilized microbe bioreactors (IMBRs) were optimized during ex situ bioremediation at a creosote‐contaminated Superfund site. Efficiency of remediation during warm summer months without soil‐temperature and moisture optimization was compared with that of cold winter months when corrective measures were applied. Significant reduction (35 percent) in total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was observed, compared to 3.97 percent without corrective measures (p < 0.05). Kinetic rates (KRs) for total PAH removal were significantly enhanced from 3.93 to 50.95 mg/kg/day. KRs for removal of high molecular mass four‐to‐six‐ring PAHs were also significantly enhanced from 70.29 mg/kg/day to 97.45 mg/kg/day ( p < 0.05). Bioremediation of two‐ and three‐ring PAHs increased significantly from 15 percent to 40 percent. Benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent mass (BaPequiv) was significantly reduced by 48 percent with KR of 0.47 mg/kg/day as compared to 22 percent with KR of 0.14 mg/kg/day (p < 0.05). A fetal abnormality detected at 15 weeks by ultrasound consisted of cystic appearing masses in the neck and back region. The differential diagnosis included gonadal dysgenesis (Turner's syndrome) with cystic hygroma, neural tube defect, e.g. encephalocele or meningomyelocele, and fetal hydrops. Intrauterine fetal demise occurred at 17 weeks. The fetus had marked edema possibly related to umbilical cord occlusion.  相似文献
