Climate change may affect the frequency, intensity, and geographic distribution of severe coastal storms. Concurrent sea-level rise would raise the baseline of flooding during such events. Meanwhile, social vulnerability factors such as poverty and disability hinder the ability to cope with storms and storm damage. While physical changes are likely to remain scientifically uncertain into the foreseeable future, the ability to mitigate potential impacts from coastal flooding may be fostered by better understanding the interplay of social and physical factors that produce human vulnerability. This study does so by integrating the classic causal model of hazards with social, environmental, and spatial dynamics that lead to the differential ability of people to cope with hazards. It uses Census data, factor analysis, data envelopment analysis, and floodplain maps to understand the compound social and physical vulnerability of coastal residents in the city of Revere, MA, USA. A single umbilical artery was seen in 10 out of 117 cytogenetically abnormal pregnancies. The abnormal karyotypes found to be associated with a single umbilical artery were trisomy 18 (n = 5), monosomy X (n = 2), triploidy (n = 1), sex chromosome (47,XYY; n = 1) and translocation (46t(X,5)(q13p15); n = 1). With the exception of the translocation case, all cases with a single umbilical artery had anatomical defects which were detectable ultrasonographically. This suggests that a single umbilical artery alone is not an indication for prenatal fetal karyotyping.  相似文献

The prenatal diagnosis of the cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of Zellweger (CHRS) was made by assaying the levels of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) in amniotic fluid cell cultures, obtained by amniocentesis at 16 1/2 weeks of pregnancy. The family-at-risk, because they had previously borne a child with CHRS, accepted these results as indications of an affected fetus, and chose to terminate the pregnancy at 20 1/2 weeks of gestation. The diagnosis was confirned by the phenotype of the aborted fetus and the presence of markedly elevated levels of VLCFAs in fetal liver homogenates. The prenatal diagnosis of CHRS, which can now readily be determined from amniotic fluid cell cultures, is an important step in genetic counselling of families-at-risk for this disease.  相似文献

The accumulation of cadmium was investigated in two species of oysters [Crassostrea gigas (L.) and Ostrea edulis (L.)] from the same environment and in oysters of the same species (O. edulis) from two different environments (contaminated and uncontaminated), under controlled laboratory conditions (33‰ salinity, 10°C, 100 μg Cd l-1) for up to 111 d in 1982. C. gigas accumulated cadmium twice as fast as O. edulis (1.07 vs 0.52 μg Cd g-1 wet wt d-1). Furthermore, O. edulis from an uncontaminated environment accumulated cadmium faster than O. edulis from a metal-contaminated environment (0.52 vs 0.34 μg Cd g-1 wet wt d-1). There was no effect of cadmium exposure on total soft-tissue copper and zinc concentrations. Investigation of cytosolic metal-binding using Sephadex G-75 gel-permeation chromatography indicated that binding to very low molecular weight ligands (MW<1000) accounted for>70% of the cytosolic zinc in all oysters and>40% of the cytosolic cadmium in all oysters except O. edulis from Conwy at 83 d. In copper-contaminated oysters, excess copper was also associated with very low molecular weight ligands. Intermediate molecular weight cadmium/copper-binding proteins (similar to metallothionein in molecular weight) were observed in the cytosol and were shown to differ between species in terms of their behavior on Sephadex G-75. Finally, the distribution of accumulated cytosolic cadmium in O. edulis from the contaminated environment was shown to have a unique distribution, i.e., there was no cadmium associated with high molecular weight cytosolic macromolecules. The data indicate that both genetic and environmental factors influence cadmium accumulation in oysters.  相似文献

Cellular and subcellular responses of the marine burrowing bivalve Venus verrucosa collected from the north-eastern coastline of Malta from January to June 1985, after exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons (PHC) were investigated. After long-term exposure to 100 gl-1 of water-accomodated fractions (WAF) of crude oil, PHC were found to accumulate most rapidly in the digestive gland and then in the gills, with saturation levels being reached within 100 d of exposure in both cases. PHC accumulation, both in the mantle and muscle tissues, was more gradual and consistent throughout the whole exposure period. After 150 d of exposure, the digestive cells of the digestive gland were significantly reduced in height (atrophy) and exhibited reduced lysosomal membrane stability. After 144 h of exposure to higher concentration of PHC (820 and 420 gl-1), several cytological effects were recorded, including an increase in cell volume and activity of gill mucocytes as well as in the number of haemocytes in gill blood sinuses. There was also evidence of damage to the epithelial lining of the foot, stomach and style sac and marked atrophy of the digestive cells of the digestive gland. A complete energy balance equation was estimated for the common octopus Octopus vulgaris at a constant temperature of 20°C, fed ad libitum on anchovy fillet (Engraulis encrasicolus). Energy used for growth and respiration or lost with faeces and excreted ammonia was estimated, along with total energy consumption through food, for six specimens of O. vulgaris (with masses between 114 and 662 g). The energy balance equation was estimated for the specimens at 10-day intervals. During each 10-day interval, food consumed, body mass increase and quantity of faeces voided were measured. The calorific values of octopus flesh, anchovy flesh and faeces were measured by bomb calorimetry. Oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion rates were monitored for each specimen during three 24-h experiments and daily oxygen consumption and ammonia excretion were estimated. It was found that 58% of the energy consumed was used for respiration. The amount of energy invested in somatic and gonadal growth represented 26% of the total energy budget. The energy discarded through faeces was 13% of consumed energy. The estimated assimilation efficiency (AE) values of O. vulgaris feeding on anchovy (80.9–90.7%) were lower than the AE values estimated for other cephalopod species with different diets of lower lipid content such as crabs or mussels. Specific growth rates (SGR) ranged 0.43–0.95 and were similar to those reported for other high-lipid diets (bogue, sardine) and lower than SGR values found for low-lipid, high-protein diets (squid, crab, natural diet). Ammonia excretion peak (6 h after feeding) followed the one of oxygen consumption (1 h after feeding). The values of atomic oxygen-to-nitrogen (O:N) ratio indicated a protein-dominated metabolism for O. vulgaris.  相似文献

Weekday/weekend ozone differences: what can we learn from them?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
A national analysis of weekday/weekend ozone (O3) differences demonstrates significant variation across the country. Weekend 1-hr or 8-hr maximum O3 varies from 15% lower than weekday levels to 30% higher. The weekend O3 increases are primarily found in and around large coastal cities in California and large cities in the Midwest and Northeast Corridor. Both the average and the 95th percentile of the daily 1-hr and 8-hr maxima exhibit the same general pattern. Many sites that have elevated O3 also have higher O3 on weekends even though traffic and O3 precursor levels are substantially reduced on weekends. Detailed studies of this phenomenon indicate that the primary cause of the higher O3 on weekends is the reduction in oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions on weekends in a volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited chemical regime. In contrast, the lower O3 on weekends in other locations is probably a result of NOx reductions in a NOx-limited regime. The NOx reduction explanation is supported by a wide range of ambient analyses and several photochemical modeling studies. Changes in the timing and location of emissions and meteorological factors play smaller roles in weekend O3 behavior. Weekday/weekend temperature differences do not explain the weekend effect but may modify it.  相似文献
