The interference of low molecular weight additives in polyvinyl fluoride film (PVF; “Tedlar”) used for the construction of smogchambers has been investigated by means of irradiation experiments, chemical modelling and analytical techniques. The results indicate that PVF is unsuitable as a wall material for smogchambers, owing to interference in hydrocarbon measurements, possibly NOx-measurements, and in the formation of ozone and peroxyacetyl nitrate. This information is thought to be of interest to present and future workers in air pollution research. 相似文献

The need for transportation and storage of CO2 in bulk quantities is likely to increase in the near future. The handling of CO2 on such scale gives rise to a number of technological challenges and safety aspects. The accidental rupture of a vessel containing liquefied CO2 may lead to a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion (BLEVE). Whether explosive evaporation of liquefied CO2 is also possible at storage temperatures below the homogeneous nucleation temperature 271 K (?2 °C) is unclear.This article describes the results of 12 experiments with 40 L CO2 cylinders at various temperatures to investigate the temperature dependence of explosive evaporation. The cylinders were opened with linear shaped charges to simulate a near instantaneous rupture, and blast was measured at various locations. The observed blast could be clearly attributed to explosive evaporation. The results show that below the homogeneous nucleation temperature, BLEVE blast does not disappear abruptly, but instead follows a gradual decay. Predictions with a numerical BLEVE blast model overestimate the observed blast peak overpressure and impulse, but qualitatively show a similar behaviour. The energy lost by the acceleration of the cylinder parts is a possible reason for overestimations of the model.The consequence of the test results is that for accident scenarios with CO2 at low temperatures a BLEVE should not be neglected in hazard assessments. Future large scale bulk storage will take place at a 105 times larger volume than the cylinders applied in the current small scale experiments. We expect that the blast-reducing effects of a tank shell will disappear at such scale.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007–2013) under grant agreement n° 241381. 相似文献

A series of experimental runs were conducted from 1995 to 1999 in Madison (WI, USA) with the goal to investigate the biodegradation process of seven (7) solid waste components and mixtures of them under near optimal aerobic conditions. It was shown that substrates with high initial lignin contents or high initial HWSM contents were observed to have relatively low and high degradation extents, respectively. Two linear equations were derived that correlate degradation extent (as indicated by the volatile solids reduction) to initial lignin and initial HWSM contents separately. The lignin equation was compared to a similar equation previously developed for anaerobic environments by Chandler et al. (Predicting methane fermentation biodegradability. In: Biotechnology and Bioengineering Symposium No. 10 (1980) New York: John Wiley & Sons). With comparison to the Chandler formula, lignin was found to be less inhibitory to the overall substrate decomposition in aerobic environments compared to anaerobic ones. Cellulose loss contributed to a higher than 50% to the overall dry mass loss for all substrates studied. In addition, the cellulose to lignin (C/L) ratio appeared to be a relatively accurate compost maturity indicator, since it reduced to a value less than 0.5 for most substrates that had reached their degradation extent. 相似文献
