Contrary to a widely held view, rather than seeing the certification of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) as a barrier to increasing employee participation, this article views new ways of structuring participation as a necessary step towards making improvements in OHS management systems. The article first considers how work organization has changed and then in a similar way traces how bargaining has shifted from being distributive to become integrative to create a fundamental change in the negotiation regime. Finally, by analyzing an OHS-certified firm in greater depth, the article shows how solutions for improvements in OHS management and notable bottom-up formulations of OHS benchmarks may help us discover how the organizational form of firms with high-performance work organization can be developed through new participatory structures.  相似文献

This study examines the recent soil Lead Abatement Strategy (LAS) in Boolaroo, New South Wales, Australia, that was designed to “achieve a reduction in human exposure to lead dust contamination in surface soils”. The abatement programme addressed legacy contamination of residential areas following closure of lead smelting operations in 2003 at the Pasminco Cockle Creek Smelter (PCCS). The principal objective of the LAS was to “cap and cover” lead-contaminated soils within the urban environment surrounding the PCCS. Soil lead concentrations of 2500–5000 mg/kg were scheduled for removal and replacement, while concentrations between 1500 and 2500 mg/kg were replaced only under limited circumstances. To date, there has been no industry, government or independent assessment of the clean-up programme that involved >2000 homes in the township of Boolaroo. Thus, by measuring post-abatement soil lead concentrations in Boolaroo, this study addresses this knowledge gap and evaluates the effectiveness of the LAS for reducing the potential for lead exposure. Soil lead concentrations above the Australian residential soil health investigation level value for residential soils (300 mg/kg) were identified at all but one of the residential properties examined (n = 19). Vacuum dust samples (n = 17) from the same homes had a mean lead concentration of 495 mg/kg (median 380 mg/kg). Bio-accessibility testing revealed that lead in household vacuum dust was readily accessible (% bio-accessible) (mean = 92 %, median = 90 %), demonstrating that the risk of exposure via this pathway remains. Assessment of a limited number of properties (n = 8) where pre-abatement soil lead levels were available for comparison showed they were not statistically different to post-abatement. Although the LAS did not include treatment of non-residential properties, sampling of community areas including public sports fields, playgrounds and schools (n = 32) was undertaken to determine the contamination legacy in these areas. Elevated mean soil lead concentrations were found across public lands: sports fields = 5130 mg/kg (median = 1275 mg/kg), playgrounds and schools = 812 mg/kg (median = 920 mg/kg) and open space = 778 mg/kg (median = 620 mg/kg). Overall, the study results show that the LAS programme that was dominated by a “cap and cover” approach to address widespread lead contamination was inadequate for mitigating current and future risk of lead exposures.  相似文献

Extracts of 22 marine invertebrates were incubated with 29 different carbohydrates, and enzyme spectra estimated from chromatograms. Enzymatic activities were quantified as reducing sugar in 14 of these species. Significant hydrolysis of laminaran, glycogen, and amylose was found in nearly all species, while hydrolysis of oligosaccharides and structural polysaccharides in most cases was weak or absent. The strongest overall degradation of carbohydrates was found among crustaceans. Enzymatic degradation of laminaran shows some relation to food, but the spectra of carbohydrases are not directly predictable from knowledge of natural food sources. Some carbohydrases (sucrase, cellobiase, lactase) could not be explained by ecological considerations. The results indicate that structural polysaccharides are utilized only to a small extent.  相似文献

The aims were to assess the impact of a total smoking ban on the level of airborne contaminants and the urinary cotinine levels in the employees in bars and restaurants. In a follow up design, 13 bars and restaurants were visited before and after the implementation of a smoking ban. Ninety-three employees in the establishments were initially included into the study. The arithmetic mean concentration of nicotine and total dust declined from 28.3 microg m(-3) (range, 0.4-88.0) and 262 microg m(-3) (range, 52-662), respectively, to 0.6 microg m(-3) (range, not detected-3.7) and 77 microg m(-3) (range, not detected-261) after the smoking ban. The Pearson correlation coefficient between airborne nicotine and total dust was 0.86 (p < 0.001; n = 48). The post-shift geometric mean urinary cotinine concentration declined from 9.5 microg g(-1) creatinine (cr) (95% CI 6.5-13.7) to 1.4 microg g(-1) cr (95% CI 0.8-2.5) after the ban (p < 0.001) in 25 non-snuffing non-smokers. A reduction from 1444 microg g(-1) cr (95% CI 957-2180) to 688 microg g(-1) cr (95% CI 324-1458) was found (p < 0.05) in 29 non-snuffing smokers. The urinary cotinine levels increased from 11.7 microg g(-1) cr (95% CI 7.0-19.6) post-shift to 21.9 microg g(-1) cr (95% CI 13.3-36.3) (p < 0.01) in the next morning in 24 non-snuffing non-smokers before the smoking ban. A substantial reduction of airborne nicotine and total dust was observed after the introduction of a smoking ban in bars and restaurants. The urinary cotinine levels were reduced in non-smokers. The decline found in smokers may suggest a reduction in the amount of smoking after intervention. In non-smokers cotinine concentrations were higher based on urine sampled the morning after a shift than based on urine sampled immediately post-shift.  相似文献

Reactive organic chemicals comprise a large number of compounds with a variety of reactive moieties. While most assays for reactive toxicity focus on DNA damage, reactivity towards proteins can also lead to irreparable damage, but reactivity towards proteins is typically not included in any test battery for water quality assessment. Glutathione (GSH) is a small tripeptide whose cysteine moiety can serve as a model for nucleophilic sites on proteins. GSH is also an important indicator of detoxification processes and the redox status of cells and due to its protective role, depletion of GSH ultimately leads to adverse effects. A bioassay based on genetically modified Escherichia coli strains was used to quantify the specific reactivity towards the protein-like biological nucelophile GSH. The significance of GSH for detoxification was assessed by comparing the growth inhibition induced by reference chemicals or water samples in a GSH-deficient strain to its fully functional parent strain. The GSH deficient strain showed the same sensitivity as the GSH proficient strain to non-reactive and DNA damaging chemicals, but was more sensitive to chemicals that attack cysteine in proteins. The difference in effect concentrations for 50% inhibition of growth assessed as biomass increase (EC(50)) between the two strains indicates the relevance of GSH conjugation as a detoxification step as well as direct reactivity with cysteine-containing proteins. Seven reference compounds serving as positive and negative controls were investigated. The E. coli strain that lacks GSH was four times more sensitive towards the positive control Sea-Nine, while negative controls benzo[a]pyrene, 2-aminoanthracene, phenol, t-butylhydroquinone, methyl methane sulfonate and 4-nitroquinoline oxide showed equal effect concentrations in both strains. Water samples collected across an indirect potable reuse scheme representing the complete water cycle from sewage to drinking water in South East Queensland, Australia were used to evaluate the applicability of the E. coli assay for reactive toxicity in water samples. While the EC(50) values of the GSH+ strain showed similar trends as in other biological endpoints over the various treatment chains, the specific response indicative of protein damage was only observed in samples that had undergone chlorination as a disinfection process. High natural organic matter or other matrix components disturbed the bioassay so much that we recommend it for future routine testing only in tertiary treated water or drinking water.  相似文献

Thin sediment capping is a commonly used technique to prevent mobilization of contaminants from sediments into the environment. A 70‐m‐deep subaqueous confined disposal facility (CDF, 350,000 m2) at Malmøykalven, Oslofjord, which received dredged contaminated sediments from Oslo Harbor, was capped with 148,900 m3 of sand in 2009. This research serves as a case study regarding some of the key considerations involved with the cap placement and monitoring of the cap layer. Uncertainty is included in all the cap thickness monitoring methods and a combined use of them provided a better understanding of the cap coverage and structure at the site. An open water disposal model (STFATE) was used to simulate the behavior of the barge‐released cap material. The modeling results were consistent with field observations regarding the material spread, and the results provided insight into the relatively high material losses calculated. Better knowledge obtained of material settling resulted in cap properties and cap monitoring methods that are useful when planning similar operations. ©2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Methods for measurements and the potential for occupational exposure to organophosphates (OPs) originating from turbine and hydraulic oils among flying personnel in the aviation industry are described. Different sampling methods were applied, including active within-day methods for OPs and VOCs, newly developed passive long-term sample methods (deposition of OPs to wipe surface areas and to activated charcoal cloths), and measurements of OPs in high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) recirculation filters (n = 6). In total, 95 and 72 within-day OP and VOC samples, respectively, have been collected during 47 flights in six different models of turbine jet engine, propeller and helicopter aircrafts (n = 40). In general, the OP air levels from the within-day samples were low. A post-combustion CO2 capture process intended for offshore operations has been designed and optimised for integration with a natural gas-fired power plant on board a floating structure developed by the Norway-based company Sevan Marine ASA—designated Sevan GTW (gas-to-wire). The concept is constrained by the structure of the floater carrying a SIEMENS modular power system rated at 450 MWe, with a capture rate of 90% and CO2 compression (1.47 Mtpa) for pipeline pressure at 12 MPa. A net efficiency of 45% (based on a lower heating value) is estimated for the system with CO2 capture, thus suggesting that the post-combustion CO2 capture system is accountable for a fuel penalty of nine percentage points.The rationale behind the technology selection is the urgency of replacing the dispersed aero-derivative gas turbines which power the offshore oil and gas production units in Norwegian waters with near-zero emission power.As (inherently) fresh water usually constitutes a limiting factor in sea operations, efforts are made to obtain a neutral water balance to obtain an optimal design.
