Glycosylation of bisphenol A by freshwater microalgae   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA, 4,4'-isopropylidenediphenol) is used to manufacture polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resin linings of food and beverage cans, and the residues from these products are then sometimes discharged into rivers and lakes in waste leachates. However, the fate of BPA in the environment has not yet been thoroughly elucidated. Considering the effect of BPA on aquatic organisms, it is important that we estimate the concentration of BPA and its metabolites in the aquatic environment, but there are few data on the metabolites of BPA. Here, we focused on freshwater microalgae as organisms that contribute to the biodegradation or biotransformation of BPA in aquatic environments. When we added BPA to cultures of eight species of freshwater microalgae, a reduction in the concentration of BPA in the culture medium was observed in all cultures. BPA was metabolized to BPA glycosides by Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, Scenedesmus acutus, Scenedesmus quadricauda, and Coelastrum reticulatum, and these metabolites were then released into the culture medium. The metabolite from P. subcapitata, S. acutus, and C. reticulatum was identified by FAB-MS and (1)H-NMR as bisphenol A-mono-O-beta-d-glucopyranoside (BPAGlc), and another metabolite, from S. quadricauda, was identified as bisphenol A-mono-O-beta-d-galactopyranoside (BPAGal). These results demonstrate that freshwater microalgae that inhabit universal environments can metabolize BPA to its glycosides. Because BPA glycosides accumulate in plants and algae, and may be digested to BPA by beta-glycosidase in animal intestines, more attention should be given to levels of BPA glycosides in the environment to estimate the ecological impact of discharged BPA.  相似文献

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) and polybrominated diethyl ethers (PBDEs) were detected in three sediment cores and six surface sediments of Tokyo Bay, Japan. HBCDs were detected for the first time in this region with concentrations ranging from 0.056 to 2.3 ng/g dry wt, implying their widespread contamination, even though their concentrations were lower than summation operatorPBDEs (di- to nona-BDEs) and BDE-209. Levels of these compounds were higher near to the highly populated industrial area of the bay implicating industrial and human activities as sources of these compounds. Summation operatorPBDEs increased in the sediment layer up to the mid-1990s and decreased afterwards, whereas BDE-209 showed an increasing trend until now, following the usage of different commercial BDE mixtures. HBCDs first appeared in the mid-1970s and increased until today. The annual surficial flux of HBCDs (0.62-2.4 ng/cm2/yr) is equal to summation operatorPBDEs (0.95-2.6 ng/cm2/yr) but lower than that of BDE-209 (17-58 ng/cm2/yr).  相似文献

An open top chamber experiment was carried out in the summer of 2003 to examine the effect of nitrous acid (HONO) gas on the physiological status of Scots pine saplings (Pinus sylvestris). Four-year-old pine trees were exposed to two different levels of HONO gas (at ca. 2.5 ppb and 5.0 ppb) and a control (filtered air) from early evening to early morning (18:00-6:00), in duplicate open top chambers. Significant decreases in the ratios of chlorophylls a to b, an increase in the carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and a reduction of maximum yield of PS II (F(v)/F(m)) in pine needles were also observed after the 2 months' fumigation. Cation contents of pine needles were also decreased by the fumigation with HONO gas. The results could be explained by the harmful effects of OH radicals, generated from photolysis of HONO gas, and/or aqueous phase HONO (NO(2)(-)/HONO), on the photosynthetic capacity of pine needles.  相似文献

We recently reported a system for inactivating antineoplastics in which sodium hypochlorite is supplied by the electrolysis of sodium chloride solution. In this study, we designed an electrolysis apparatus for inactivating the cytotoxicity of antineoplastics in clinical wastewater using the system. The apparatus consists of an electrolysis cell with platinum-iridium electrodes, a pool tank, a circulating system for wastewater, a safety system for explosive gas and overflow, and an exhaust duct. The free chlorine concentration increased linearly up to 6500 mg l(-1), and pH also increased to 9.0-10.0 within 2h, when 0.9% sodium chloride solution was electrolyzed. We examined its efficacy with model and clinical wastewaters. The reciprocal of dilution factor for disappearance of cytotoxicity using Molt-4 cells was compared before and after electrolysis. In the model wastewater, that was 9.10 x 10(4) before electrolysis, and 3.56 x 10(2) after 2h of electrolysis. In the clinical wastewater (n=26), that was 6.90 x 10(3)-1.02 x 10(6) before electrolysis, and 1.08 x 10(2)-1.45 x 10(4) after 2h of electrolysis. Poisonous and explosive gases released by the electrolysis were measured; however, they were found to be negligible in terms of safety. The environmental load was evaluated by carbon dioxide generation as an index and it was found that the carbon dioxide generated by the electrolysis method was 1/70 lower than that by the dilution method with tap water. Moreover, the cost of the electrolysis method was 1/170 lower than that of the dilution method. This method was found to be both effective and economically valuable.  相似文献

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been widely studied with respect to their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on animals and human cells. Phenanthrene (PHE) and fluoranthene (FLU) effects on the needle photosynthetic traits of 2-year-old Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora Sieb. et. Zucc.) seedlings were investigated. Three months after fumigation of foliage with solutions containing these PAHs (10 microM each), FLU had negative effects on net photosynthesis at near-saturating irradiance, stomatal conductance, initial chlorophyll fluorescence, and the contents of total chlorophyll, magnesium, and ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (rubisco) of current-year needles. PHE had similar negative effects to FLU but in lesser magnitude. The effects of the PAHs were mitigated by the addition of an OH-radical scavenger (mannitol) into the PAH solutions. PAHs deposited on the surface of pine needles may induce the generation of reactive oxygen species in the photosynthetic apparatus, a manner closely resembling the action of the herbicide paraquat.  相似文献

Trace elements (22) and stable isotope ratios (δ15N and δ13C) were analyzed in marine organisms from shallow (SW) and deep-water (DW) of the East China Sea to understand biomagnification and prey source of trace elements. In the benthic marine organisms from DW, δ15N values were negatively correlated with Ba, Cu, Ag, Mo, Sr, As, and Co concentrations. This may be due to the specific accumulation in lower trophic animals and/or the biodilution through the food web in DW. Relationships between δ15N and concentrations of Co, Cr, Bi, and Tl in fish and Ag, Bi, V, Hg, and Tl in crustaceans showed positive correlations, suggesting that trophic position was affecting the concentrations of those elements in phyla, with higher trophic animals retaining higher concentrations than the lower trophic animals. Positive correlations between δ13C and Rb were observed in marine organisms. Therefore, Rb may be a possible substitute of δ13C as tracer of prey source in the East China Sea although further investigation is required.  相似文献

We investigated competition for food among two groups of six clone amagos (salmonids), Oncorhynchusmasoumacrostomus, in a laboratory experiment with different rates of food input. We examined the effect of temporal clumping of food resources on the inequality of food sharing between competitors. Monopolization of food by dominants was greater at a low input rate (one food item per 10 s) than at a high input rate (1 food item per 1 s). Aggressive behavior by dominants was more frequent at the low input rate than at the high input rate; its purpose was presumably to interfere with the feeding behavior of subordinates. We assessed the relative importance of three foraging factors (the number of approaches to food items, the chance per approach and the gain per chance) in enhancing inequality in food gain between individuals. Dominants had a disproportionately high chance per approach and gain per chance at the low input rate, but not at the high input rate. The chance of obtaining a food item per approach depended on how many competitors approached simultaneously. The gain per chance depended on the competitive ability of the approaching fish. There was an interaction between these components, such that the number of approaches affected the chance per approach and gain per chance. We evaluated the independent effect of the chance per approach, and showed that it was higher for dominants than for subordinates at the low input rate, but not at the high input rate. This implies that subordinates changed their behavior and became more likely to avoid approaching food at the same time as dominants at the low input rate. In a subtropical Hawaiian ecosystem, phytoplanton size structure analyses (November–December, 1980) showed that ultraplankton (>3μm), nanoplankton (>20μm) and netplankton (>20μm) accounted for ca. 80, 98, and 2% of total chlorophyll standing stock, respectively, on the basis of chlorophyll. Similar trends were evident, for other biomass indices (e.g. cell numbers, total cell volume, ATP, particulate organic carbon, particulate organic nitrogen). The ultraplankton fraction consisted primarily of small flagellates (1 to 3 μm diam) and coccoid cells (?1 μm diam); the 3 to 20 μm fraction was represented by dinoflagellates, coccolithophores, diatoms, and chrysophytes; and the netplankton fraction consisted principally of dinoflagellates and centric diatoms. Community photosynthesis had a size distribution similar to that of biomass. Sinking rates for the 3 μm, 3 to 20 μm, and >20 μm fractions averaged 0.0, 0.09, and 0.29m d?1, respectively. The absence of measurable sinking rates for the ultraplankton, together with the relative abundance of biomass in this fraction, result in very small phytoplankton losses due to sinking in such subtropical surface waters.  相似文献

Three semi-continuous culture experiments were conducted by using natural algal populations [dominants: Skeletonema costatum, Thalassiosira sp., Gymnodinium sp., Heterosigma sp. (formerly called Olisthodiscus luteus) and Eutreptiella sp.] collected from Tanigawa Harbor, Japan, where red-tides occurred occasionally. The effects of macro- and micro-nutrients onto the growth of different species of algae were specifically evaluated by a dialysis bag culture technique. Two types of responses for nutrients were clearly observed; macro- and micro-nutrient dependency. The former group includes S. costatum, Thalassiosira sp. and Eutreptiella sp. which mainly stimulated their growth by macro-nutrients. Heterosigma sp. was in the latter group which was stimulated by micronutrients. Gymnodinium sp. showed an intermediate type. A red-tide of Heterosigma sp. formed during the experiment in the harbor and is discussed with the results of the present culture experiments and some field observations.  相似文献
