The Kittlitz's Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a rare, non-colonial seabird often associated with tidewater glaciers and a recent candidate for listing under the Endangered Species Act. We estimated abundance of Kittlitz's Murrelets across space and time from at-sea surveys along the coast of Alaska (USA) and then used these data to develop spatial models to describe abundance patterns and identify environmental factors affecting abundance. Over a five-week period in the summer of 2005, we recorded 794 Kittlitz's Murrelets, 16 Marbled Murrelets (B. marmoratus), and 70 unidentified murrelets. The overall population estimate (N, mean +/- SE) during the peak period (3-9 July) was 1317 +/- 294 birds, decreasing to 68 +/- 37 by the last survey period (31 July-6 August). Density of Kittlitz's Murrelets was highest in pelagic waters of Taan Fjord (18.6 +/- 7.8 birds/km2, mean +/- SE) during 10-16 July. Spatial models identified consistent "hotspots" of Kittlitz's Murrelets, including several small areas where high densities of murrelets were found throughout the survey period. Of the explanatory variables that we evaluated, tidal current strength influenced murrelet abundance most consistently, with higher abundance associated with strong tidal currents. Simulations based on the empirically derived estimates of variation demonstrated that spatial variation strongly influenced power to detect trend, although power changed little across the threefold difference in the coefficient of variation on detection probability. We include recommendations for monitoring Kittlitz's Murrelets (or other marine species) when there is a high degree of uncertainty about factors affecting abundance, especially spatial variability.  相似文献

In this paper mathematical models of the composting process are examined and their performance evaluated. Mathematical models of the composting process have been derived from both energy and mass balance considerations, with solutions typically derived in time, and in some cases, spatially. Both lumped and distributed parameter models have been reported, with lumped parameter models presently predominating in the literature. Biological energy production functions within the models included first-order, Monod-type or empirical expressions, and these have predicted volatile solids degradation, oxygen consumption or carbon dioxide production, with heat generation derived using heat quotient factors. Rate coefficient correction functions for temperature, moisture, oxygen and/or free air space have been incorporated in a number of the first-order and Monod-type expressions. The most successful models in predicting temperature profiles were those which incorporated either empirical kinetic expressions for volatile solids degradation or CO2 production, or which utilised a first-order model for volatile solids degradation, with empirical corrections for temperature and moisture variations. Models incorporating Monod-type kinetic expressions were less successful. No models were able to predict maximum, average and peak temperatures to within criteria of 5, 2 and 2 degrees C, respectively, or to predict the times to reach peak temperatures to within 8 h. Limitations included the modelling of forced aeration systems only and the generation of temperature validation data for relatively short time periods in relation to those used in full-scale composting practice. Moisture and solids profiles were well predicted by two models, but oxygen and carbon dioxide profiles were generally poorly modelled. Further research to obtain more extensive substrate degradation data, develop improved first-order biological heat production models, investigate mechanistically-based moisture correction factors, explore the role of moisture tension, investigate model performance over thermophilic composting time periods, provide more information on model sensitivity and incorporate natural ventilation aeration expressions into composting process models, is suggested.  相似文献

The long-recognized risk to human health arising from arsenic-contaminated waters is known to be linked to partitioning reactions between arsenic and natural solid phases. Currently, the ability to predict As surface complexation is limited by the lack of molecular-level understanding of As-solid interactions. In the present study, we use density functional theory (DFT) to model mono-, bi-, and tri-dentate As(III) surface complexes on different (previously proposed) structural models for hydrated hematite, modeled as α-Fe(2)O(3)(0001)-water interfaces. One of the modeled hematite-water interfaces is terminated entirely by hydroxyl surface functional groups, comprised of hematite lattice oxygen atoms. The other hematite-water interface is an iron-terminated model in which the outermost oxygen functional groups are water (and water dissociation product) ligands. We report the DFT trends in adsorption energies in terms of As-hematite coordination, hematite surface geometry/stoichiometry, and oxygen functional group identity. The DFT energetics predict that a monodentate As(III) surface complex is preferred on both hematite-water structures, suggesting that the two structural models here employed do not sufficiently represent the true surface structure to reproduce the experimental observation of As(III) bidentate coordination. However, the results do elucidate fundamental concepts of interface reactivity: A key result, supported by electronic structure analysis, is that ligand oxygen functional groups cannot be treated on equal ground with true surface oxygen functional groups. For the systems modeled here the distinction between surface and ligand functional groups supersedes the differences in oxygen coordination with surface Fe. We discuss the impact of this finding on the application of bond-valence-based predictions of mineral-water reactivity, and use the results of this study to pose questions and directions for ongoing modeling efforts aimed at linking macroscopic reactivity with molecular-level understanding.  相似文献

The preparation and dissemination of policy statements are necessary but insufficient to prevent the inappropriate use of infant-feeding products in emergencies. The widespread failure of humanitarian agencies operating in the Balkan crisis to act in accordance with international policies and recommendations provides a recent example of the failure to translate infant-feeding policies into practice. This article explores the underlying reasons behind the failures which include: (1) the weak institutionalisation of policies; (2) the massive quantities of unsolicited donations of infant-feeding products: (3) the absence of monitoring systems; (4) inadequate co-ordination mechanisms; (5) the high costs of correcting mistakes; and (6) the cumulative effects of poor practice. Efforts to uphold best practice during the crisis are also documented. Finally, the article identifies actions that could be undertaken in advance of and during future emergencies to enhance the application of infant feeding policies in emergencies.  相似文献

We investigated dissipation and sorption of atrazine, terbuthylazine, bromacil, diazinon, hexazinone and procymidone in two contrasting New Zealand soils (0–10 cm and 40–50 cm) under controlled laboratory conditions. The six pesticides showed marked differences in their degradation rates in both top- and subsoils, and the estimated DT50 values for the compounds were: 19–120 (atrazine), 10–36 (terbuthylazine), 12–46 (bromacil), 7–25 (diazinon), 8–92 (hexazinone) and 13–60 days for procymidone. Diazinon had the lowest range for DT50 values, while bromacil and hexazinone gave the highest DT50 values under any given condition on any soil type. Batch derived effective distribution coefficient (K d eff) values for the pesticides varied markedly with bromacil and hexazinone exhibiting low sorption affinity for the soils at either depth, while diazinon gave high sorption values. Comparison of pesticide degradation in sterile and non-sterile soils suggests that microbial degradation was the major dissipation pathway for all six compounds, although little influence of abiotic degradation was noticeable for diazinon and procymidone.  相似文献

Formaldehyde (CH2O) emissions from particleboard underlayment have been measured in 0.17 and 0.2 m3 chambers at separate laboratories to test the comparability of small scale environmental chamber measurements under different ventilation and product loading conditions. Absolute CH2O calibration was established through intermethod comparison of different monitoring techniques against a CH2O generation apparatus. Interlaboratory precision was enhanced via co-calibration of each laboratory’s CH2O colorimetric analyzer against the same blank and bi-level generation source at the beginning and end of the study. The results show excellent intermethod and interlaboratory agreement in both the CH2O calibration and particleboard emissions testing. The CH2O emission rates of the test specimens demonstrate a Fick’s Law dependence on CH2O vapor concentration. Measured CH2O concentrations are described by a single-compartment, single emitter model, and are inversely proportional to the ratio [N/L (m/h)] of the air exchange rate [N(h-1)] and product loading [L(m-1)]. Comparison tests at varying N and L, but uniform N/L were performed; similar CH2O concentrations were measured for N and L levels selected from an indoor compartment model, and for fivefold larger N and L values, which are more convenient for small-scale chamber testing.  相似文献

In this paper, the patterns of 44 substrate degradation profiles obtained from the composting literature are examined following their correction to a constant temperature of 40 degrees C, using a new procedure presented in this work. The applicability of a single exponential model, a double exponential model and a non-logarithmic Gompertz model in describing their behaviour is then evaluated. Multi-phase profiles were most commonly seen, with convex shapes observed in only a relatively small proportion of the profiles. Convex shapes were also embedded within other profiles, either preceeded by a lag phase, or followed by non-convex behaviour. Sigmoidal patterns were relatively rare. Of the temperature-corrected data sets examined, 33 were found to be either not well modelled by, or inappropriate for, any of the above models. Two fits rated as good were obtained when using the single exponential model, and one fit rated as excellent, plus one fit rated as good, were obtained when using the double exponential model. A single fit rated as excellent was found when using the non-logarithmic Gompertz model. The lag phase, which was observed in many data sets, was successfully modelled using the non-logarithmic Gompertz function where excellent and good fits were obtained, but as expected this phase of the profile could not be modelled by either the single or double exponential functions. When the lag phase or post-convex curve data was removed from 20 data sets, use of the single exponential function resulted in three fits rated as excellent and two rated as good. When a double exponential model was applied to these data sets, three fits rated as good were obtained, whilst application of the modified Gompertz model gave one fit rated as good. The remainder of the fits were rated as moderate to fair. It is concluded that the evidence supporting the use of the single exponential model, the double exponential model or the non-logarithmic Gompertz model to describe full substrate degradation profiles in composting following their adjustment for temperature effects is limited. Further work is suggested in order to investigate the nature of those profiles which were not well modelled, to more precisely ascertain the cardinal temperatures for composting used in the function of Rosso et al. (1993) [Rosso, L., Lobry, J.R., Flandrois, J.P., 1993. An unexpected correlation between cardinal temperatures of microbial growth highlighted by a new model. J. Theor. For over a century there have been continual efforts to incorporate nature into urban planning. These efforts (i.e., urban reconciliation) aim to manage and create habitats that support biodiversity within cities. Given that species select habitat at different spatial scales, understanding the scale at which urban species respond to their environment is critical to the success of urban reconciliation efforts. We assessed species–habitat relationships for common bat species at 50‐m, 500‐m, and 1 km spatial scales in the Chicago (U.S.A.) metropolitan area and predicted bat activity across the greater Chicago region. Habitat characteristics across all measured scales were important predictors of silver‐haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) and eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis) activity, and big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) activity was significantly lower at urban sites relative to rural sites. Open vegetation had a negative effect on silver‐haired bat activity at the 50‐m scale but a positive effect at the 500‐m scale, indicating potential shifts in the relative importance of some habitat characteristics at different scales. These results demonstrate that localized effects may be constrained by broader spatial patterns. Our findings highlight the importance of considering scale in urban reconciliation efforts and our landscape predictions provide information that can help prioritize urban conservation work.  相似文献

In some species, sperm is stored within the female reproductive tract for months to years, and yet remains viable to fertilize eggs and produce offspring. Female red-sided garter snakes store sperm for over 7 months of winter dormancy. In previous work, we demonstrated that these stored sperm account for an average of 25 % paternity of a litter when the female mates with a male at spring emergence. Here, we tested whether last-male sperm precedence was prevalent when a female mates with two males during the spring. On average, paternity was shared equally among the first (P1 proportion of paternity of the first male to mate) and second males (P2) to mate in the spring, and stored sperm (Pss), but the variance in paternity was high. Thus, last male sperm precedence may diminish when a female has more than two mates. Male size did not affect paternity, but, as the interval between matings increased, P1 increased at the expense of Pss. Interestingly, as the second spring male’s copulation duration increased, P1 also increased at the expense of P2. This result suggests that female influence over sperm and/or copulatory plug transfer during matings may also affect which male fathers her offspring in response to coercive matings as we assisted females to mate for their second mating. Finally, all females were spring “virgins”; consequently, sperm stored from autumn matings (and/or previous spring matings) remain competitive even when faced with two rivals in sperm competition and is likely the driver of the evolution of sperm longevity.  相似文献

The release of trace metals (Mn, Ni, Co, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) and inorganic compounds (As) from initially anoxic Trepangier Bayou sediments, Louisiana and the sources of the released metals were investigated. After 1 to 2 d aeration, significant amounts of trace metals (Mn, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Co) were released to the aqueous phase with increased acidity, primarily due to the oxidation of acid-volatile sulfide and ferrous iron and iron sulfide minerals. The addition of a bacterial inhibitor, NaN,, to the Trepangier sediment during resuspension inhibited metal release, suggesting that microbial catalysis can regulate metal mobilization during sediment resuspension. In a well buffered system, oxidation of iron sulfides alone did not appear to induce trace metal release. Moreover, when Trepangier sediment was resuspended in anoxic conditions at neutral pH, <1% of the trace metal content was released, whereas a significant release of metal was observed under acidic anoxic conditions. Although oxidation of iron sulfide minerals is an essential prerequisite for the release of Zn, Co, Cd, and Ni, carbonates and oxides also play a role. The trace metals and inorganic compounds investigated could be classified into three groups according to their release characteristics: (i) Mn, Zn, Cd, Ni, and Co; (ii) Fe, Pb, and As; and (iii) Cu. The groupings appeared to depend on the sources of compounds and their relative affinity, after oxidation, to iron oxyhydroxides or organic matter.  相似文献
