In situ diel variations in gut pigment contents of neritic (Acartia omorii andPseudocalanus minutus) and oceanic copepods (Calanus plumchrus andC. cristatus) were analyzed.A. omorii andP. minutus were sampled in Onagawa Bay on the east coast of Japan in May and August 1987, andC. plumchrus andC. cristatus were sampled in the Bering Sea in June 1986. Gut pigments were generally high at night, and bimodal feeding rhythms were observed in all species. The first peak of gut pigments occurred between sunset and midnight and was followed by a midnight decrease in gut pigment levels, resulting in eventual evacuation of the gut. The second peak was observed a few hours after sunrise. Incubation experiments indicated that ingestion rates of starved copepods were higher than those of acclimated copepods. This phenomenon was most notable at high food concentrations. Gut pigments of starved copepods rapidly increased after exposure to high concentrations of culturedThalassiosira decipiens. These findings suggest that in situ feeding behavior of herbivorous copepods includes periods of cessation or reduction in feeding during the night, and consequently, feeding activity is periodically enhanced with starvation. Starvation enhanced feeding behavior is most obvious in the large oceanic species,C. plumchrus andC. cristatus and is not distinct in small coastal species such asA. omorii.  相似文献

In order to clarify the contribution of nitrated products to the direct-mutagenic activity of products of the reactions of benzo[a]pyrene in NO2-air under various conditions, heterogeneous reactions of BaP deposited on filter in the air containing 10 ppm of NO2 have been conducted in dark or under photoirradiation. The reaction products have been analyzed by gas chromatography and mutagenicity of the products fractionated by preparative HPLC was assayed for Salmonella typhimurium strains TA98 and YG1024 in the absence of S9 mix. 3,6-dinitrobenzo[a]pyrene and 1,3-dinitrobenzo[a]pyrene, which are strong direct-acting mutagens, largely contributed to the total direct-acting mutagenicity of the dark reaction products in NO2-air. On the other hand, both the dark reaction in the presence of O3 and the photoreaction in NO2-air resulted in the formation of much smaller amounts of nitrobenzo[a]pyrenes than that observed in the dark reaction in the absence of O3. These results show that the contribution of other direct-acting mutagens to the total direct-acting mutagenicity of the products in these reactions should be considered. Benzo[a]pyrene lactones were identified in a highly mutagenic fraction of the products of the dark reaction in the presence of O3 and photoreaction and a nitrobenzo[a]pyrene lactone was also identified in a highly mutagenic fraction of the dark reaction products in the presence of O3. Nitrated oxygenated benzo[a]pyrene derivatives such as nitrobenzo[a]pyrene lactone were considered to largely contribute to direct-acting mutagenicity of the products of the dark reaction in the presence of O3 and photoreaction.  相似文献

Content ratios of strontium (Sr) to calcium (Ca) in the otolith of Conger myriaster metamorphosing leptocephali and elvers increased with increasing increment number from the core to the 110th increment and subsequently decreased. The otolith region from the 110th increment to the edge corresponded to the metamorphic stage. The Sr:Ca ratios in otolith edges of metamorphosing leptocephali were inversely related to metamorphic stage, suggesting that the changes in otolith Sr:Ca ratios were influenced by some physiological factor(s) rather than by environmental factors. Sr concentration in leptocephalus somatic tissues was high and decreased as metamorphosis progressed until the late metamorphic stage when the preanal myomere to total myomere ratio was 0.4. Ca concentration was constant throughout ontogenesis. Body Sr:Ca ratios markedly decreased as metamorphosis progressed. Decrease in somatic Sr concentration and the consequent decrease in body Sr:Ca ratios seemed to be associated with the breakdown of glycosaminoglycan (GAG) in gelatinous matrix, which is the major constituent of soft tissue in leptocephali. Catabolism of GAG may also cause a decrease in otolith Sr:Ca ratios during metamorphosis.  The optimal soil-washing conditions for dioxins were estimated on a soil sample from the circumference of an incinerator in Nose City, Osaka, Japan. The solvents ethanol, methanol, and acetone, together with a surfactant (100% of each) could extract 40% of the dioxins from contaminated soil at room temperature. From among these solvents, ethanol was chosen for a study on how to optimize the extraction conditions because of its low toxicity and its economic advantages. The time-course of the agitation showed that the extraction rate increased for 1 min, and thereafter the rate decreased. Therefore, the agitation time was fixed at 1 min. To estimate the effect of temperature on the extraction rate, the extraction temperature was changed. The amount of dioxins extracted was largest at the boiling point of ethanol (78.3°C), giving about 76% extraction. Furthermore, at this temperature, almost 100% of the dioxins in the contaminated soil were extracted when the ratio of water to ethanol was 20%. We studied the characteristic gram-stain of Tc insolubilizing bacteria using various antibiotics, and the fate of insoluble Tc in a water column above flooded paddy soil to clarify Tc behavior in paddy fields. The formation of insoluble Tc in water column samples was inhibited by the addition of antibiotics, especially reagents against gram-negative bacteria. For a sample without antibiotics, insoluble Tc formation increased with time, and the maximum amount of insoluble Tc was observed on day 4 of incubation with (95m)Tc. In contrast, concentrations of ferrous ion decreased with time. These results suggested that gram-negative bacteria were mainly responsible for insoluble Tc formation, and that these bacteria were able to transform soluble Tc to insoluble forms under oxidizing conditions.  相似文献

The degradation rate of dioxins added to the activated sludge from a leachate treatment plant of a landfill under denitrification conditions was estimated using six bioreactors. Over 99% of the added dioxins (600ng) were degraded within 7 days. Furthermore, continuous cultivation was carried out for 1 month. The activated sludge degraded 600ng of dioxins (that is, all of the added dioxins) placed in each reactor every 7 days, and this activity was maintained for 35 days. Under aerobic conditions with this sludge, the dioxins were not degraded in 7 days, but 90% of the 600ng of dioxins was degraded in 35 days. The high level of activity observed in the present study may only occur under anaerobic conditions, especially under denitrifying conditions.  相似文献
