Summary. Juvenile hormones are sesquiterpenoids that regulate developmental processses such as metamorphosis and reproduction in insects.
Insect juvenile hormone III (JH III), methyl-10R,11-epoxy-3,7,11-trimethyl-2E,6E-dodecadienoate, has also been identified in two sedge species, Cyperus iria and C. aromaticus (Toong et al. 1988). Potential allelopathic activity of this compound and the structurally related sesquiterpenoid farnesol was investigated
using seed germination and seedling growth assays with radish, lettuce and rice. Treatment of seeds with JH III delayed lettuce
seed germination and potently inhibited rice shoot growth. Both farnesol and JH III inhibited the growth of C. iria seedlings. The antimicrobial activity of JH III was also tested on a taxonomic and ecologically diverse range of fungi. Using
the classic cytotoxic disk assay, JH III did not effect growth of the fungal species tested. We believe that JH III may contribute
to the aggressive nature of this invasive weed species.

Cathode ray tube (CRT) glass is considered a hazardous material due to its lead toxicity. In addition, current disposal practices are being phased out due to their adverse environmental impacts. In this project, CRT glass was used as a fine aggregate replacement in concrete. Life-cycle material characterization was conducted by evaluating the durability and strength of the CRT-Concrete. Leaching tests were also conducted to investigate whether the material meets drinking water limits for Pb. Test results show that the plastic state of the CRT-Concrete was affected by the angularity of the glass particles. Moreover, the compressive strength of CRT-Concrete met and exceeded that of the control specimen. However, CRT-Concrete was susceptible to expansive alkali-silica reactions when more than 10% CRT replacement was used. Environmental leaching results show that lead concentrations from CRT-Concrete are below the drinking water limits depending on the CRT volume replacement and if biopolymers are used. 相似文献

Foam extrusion of biodegradable polyester [poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)] and its blends with maleated thermoplastic
starch (MTPS) using a chemical blowing agent was performed. The effect of MTPS and percentage of chemical blowing agent on
various foam properties is discussed. In general, an increased amount of PBAT in the foams improves the properties of the
foams. The foam samples were characterized by measurements of density, expansion ratio, specific length, compressive strength,
resiliency, moisture sorption, and imaging using digital light microscopy. Density, expansion ratio, and specific length measurements
show that the best characteristics of lowest density, highest expansion ratio, and highest specific length are exhibited by
the PBAT samples. The compressive strength and foam density exhibit a power-law relationship. Greater amounts of PBAT in the
samples increase the resiliency and decrease the steady state weight gain during moisture sorption. All samples show regions
of unfoamed material when only 3% chemical blowing agent is used, but when 5 and 7% chemical blowing agent is used, the samples

ABSTRACT: The outflows of Lake Superior through the St. Marys River have been modified from natural conditions, initially by the construction of engineering works, such as bridges, and later by the construction of control works and the regulation of the lake. For all practical purposes, the period from 1860 to 1887 represents the natural river conditions. During the period 1888-1900 the regimen was modified by the construction of the International Railroad Bridge and the Chandler-Dunbar Power Canal. In 1901 construction began on the compensating works. Following the completion of the compensating works in August 1921, the Lake Superior outflows were regulated in accordance with the Orders of Approval, 26 and 27 May 1914. A hydrologic response model was developed to simulate the natural Lake Superior regime. The model was run for the 1860–1975 period to simulate natural Lake Superior levels and outflows. The simulated levels were compared with the recorded levels to determine the effect of regulation. It was found that regulation has resulted in a rise in Lake Superior water levels. The simulated natural outflows for the period from 1937 to 1975 were run through the Great Lakes hydrologic response model to analyze the regulation effects on Lakes Michigan-Huron, St. Clair, and Erie. ABSTRACT: A climate change impacts assessment for water resources in the San Joaquin River region of California is presented. Regional climate projections are based on a 1 percent per year CO2 increase relative to late 20th Century CO2 conditions. Two global projections of this CO2 increase scenario are considered (HadCM2 and PCM) during two future periods (2010 to 2039 and 2050 to 2079). HadCM2 projects faster warming than PCM. HadCM2 and PCM project wetter and drier conditions, respectively, relative to present climate. In the HadCM2 case, there would be increased reservoir inflows, increased storage limited by existing capacity, and increased releases for deliveries and river flows. In the PCM case, there would be decreased reservoir inflows, decreased storage and releases, and decreased deliveries. Impacts under either projection case cannot be regarded as more likely than the other. Most of the impacts uncertainty is attributable to the divergence in the precipitation projections. The range of assessed impacts is too broad to guide selection of mitigation projects. Regional planning agencies can respond by developing contingency strategies for these cases and applying the methodology herein to evaluate a broader set of CO2 scenarios, land use projections, and operational assumptions. Improved agency access to climate projection information is necessary to support this effort. 相似文献
