The worldwide expansion of the metalliferous mining industry has caused increased attention to be directed at the reclamation of mine wastes. Until recently the majority of reclamation procedures were based on substrate amelioration with innocuous covering materials, the application of fertilisers and the sowing of non-indigenous species. Reinstatement of the native flora and fauna was rarely attempted. However, in several countries the mining legislation now requires reinstatement of at least the native vegetation as a reclamation objective. Many mines are located in natural ecosystems such as tropical and temperate forest, and arctic and alpine tundra where faithful reinstatement of the native flora and, if possible, the fauna is the prime objective.Despite the adverse physical and chemical properties of metal mine wastes, the requirements for the restoration of native floras and faunas are not impossible to meet. This paper reviews procedures for the restoration of native vegetation on land disturbed by metalliferous mining, and assesses the success of the procedures where appropriate evidence is available. Using these methods it has often been possible to create a permanent, self-perpetuating and relatively maintenance-free native vegetation which provides a diverse mosaic of habitats for native fauna to colonise. However, the development of methods for reinstatement of native biological communities on metalliferous mine wastes is in its infancy. Proper criteria have not yet been established for the assessment of the success of reinstatement and there is a paucity of published qualitative information on the success of restoration of native plant communities, particularly information covering a sufficient period of time to be ecologically meaningful. 相似文献

The contribution of derelict industrial sites to the conservation of rare plants in the British Isles is reviewed. Many sites have acquired considerable biological interest and have been designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest or nature reserves. In most cases the development of wildlife interest has in the past been fortuitous rather than planned. There is, however, increasing evidence that the deliberate re-development of specific areas of derelict land for wildlife conservation is technical feasible. Whilst the forward planning of new mineral developments must continue to take account of existing wildlife values to minimise potential conflict and losses, nature conservation may, in certain circumstances, be considered as viable an endopoint as the more commonplace objectives of landscape rehabilitation. Further development of this policy could provide a means of compensating for the inevitable losses that will occur in the future, and greater attention must be paid to the potential of derelict industrial sites in this context. 相似文献

The release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by Ascophyllum nodosum (L.) Le Jol. and Fucus vesiculusus L. during rehydration was investigated after desiccation under experimental conditions. During 30 min of rehydration of plants which had lost up to 70% of their water, A. nodosum released about 2 to 10 mg C/100 g dry weight, while F. vesiculosus released 10 to 50 times more. When dried to water losses exceeding 70%, plants of both species yielded similar amounts of DOC, approximating 2 g C/100 g dry weight. Considerable variance in the amounts of DOC released by individual plant of both species was observed over the whole range of water losses tested. Among the DOC released, the portion of carbohydrate-C was O to 5% with A. nodosum but 2 to 47% with F. vesiculosus. This difference was most pronounced when less than 100 mg C/100 g dry weight were released. A. nodosum regained a smaller percentage of its original weight than F. vesiculosus after 30 min of rehydration when more than 30% of fresh weight were lost during desiccation. Curves were obtained which enable the estimation of water losses in naturally desiccated specimens within 30 min. 相似文献

The crisis in the early 1990s over conservation of biodiversity in the forests of the Pacific Northwest caused an upheaval in forest policies for public and private landowners. These events led to the development of the Coastal Landscape Assessment and Modeling Study (CLAMS) for the Coast Range Physiographic Province of Oregon, a province containing over two million hectares of forest with a complex mixture of public and private ownership. Over a decade, CLAMS scientists developed regional data bases and tools to enable assessments of the implications of current policies for biodiversity and have begun using these data and tools to test ideas for solving policy problems. We summarize here four main lessons from our work: (1) Regional ecosystem perspectives, while rewarding, are difficult to achieve. Helping policy makers and the public understand biodiversity policies for an entire province can assist in developing more reasoned policies. However, this result is difficult to achieve because needed scientific building blocks generally do not exist, few policy institutions address regional cross-ownership issues, people can find it difficult to take a regional view, and the appropriate region for analysis changes with the policy problem. (2) Interest in environmental policy analysis may come as much from a pursuit of power as a pursuit of understanding. Biodiversity policy analyses are often viewed as weapons in an ongoing political battle. Also, results that might destabilize existing policies generally will not be well received by those in power. (3) The relationship of regional analyses to civic processes remains challenging and unsettled. Communication between citizens and scientists takes real effort. Also, collaborative processes both inspire and constrain regional policy analysis, and scientific work often proceeds at a different pace than these processes. In the end, CLAMS's most important effect on the civic dialogue may be to change how people think about the Coast Range. (4) An important role exists for anticipatory assessments done independently by scientists. Independent review will be especially important as policy analyses shift to management of nonfederal forests. Our future efforts in CLAMS will focus on evaluating ideas for fundamental changes in forest management. 相似文献

Summary. The bolas spider, Mastophora hutchinsoni, attracts Lacinipolia renigera and Tetanolita mynesalis males by mimicking the female moth sex pheromones. However, as the prey species use completely different pheromone blends
we conducted experiments to determine how this is accomplished by the predator. The periodicity of L. renigera mate-seeking activities occurs early in the scotophase, whereas male T. mynesalis are active late at night, corresponding with periods when these moths are captured by the spider. The pheromone blend of
early-flying L. renigera interferes with attraction of late-flying T. mynesalis to its pheromone in a dose-dependent manner, suggesting the spider must always produce a single sub-optimal “compromise”
blend for both species or that it adjusts its allomonal blend to optimize capture of the respective prey species at different
times during the night. We delayed (L. renigera) or advanced (T. mynesalis) the periodicity of male activity through photoperiodic manipulation and found that the bolas spider attracted both prey
species outside their normal activity windows. These results support the idea that bolas spiders produce components of both
species at all times rather than producing the pheromone of each prey species at different times of the night. However, using
coupled gas chromatography-electroantennography, we also demonstrated that the spider decreases its emission of the L. renigera pheromone over the course of the night. This modification should reduce the behavioral antagonism of the L. renigera pheromone on T. mynesalis males and increase the predator's success of attracting T. mynesalis during this prey's normal activity window late at night.

This study focuses on sediment exchange dynamics in Mwache Creek, a shallow tidal mangrove wetland in Kenya. The surface area of the creek is 17 km2 at high water spring. The creek experiences semidiurnal tides with tidal ranges of 3.2 m and 1.4 m during spring and neap tides, respectively. The creek is ebb dominant in the frontwater zone main channel and is flood dominant in the backwater zone main channel. During rainy season, the creek receives freshwater and terrigenous sediments from the seasonal Mwache River. Heavy supply of terrigenous sediments during the El Ni?o of 1997-1998 led to the huge deposition of sediments (10(60 tonnes) in the wetland that caused massive destruction of the mangrove forest in the upper region. In this study, sea level, tidal discharges, tidal current velocities, salinity, total suspended sediment concentrations (TSSC) and particulate organic sediment concentrations (POSC) measured in stations established within the main channel and also within the mangrove forests, were used to determine the dynamics of sediment exchange between the frontwater and backwater zones of the main channel including also the exchange with mangrove forests. The results showed that during wet seasons, the high suspended sediment concentration associated with river discharge and tidal resuspension of fine channel-bed sediment accounts for the inflow of highly turbid water into the degraded mangrove forest. Despite the degradation of the mangrove forest, sediment outflow from the mangrove forest was considerably less than the inflow. This caused a net trapping of sediment in the wetland. The net import of the sediment dominated in spring tide during both wet and dry season and during neap tide in the wet season. However, as compared to heavily vegetated mangrove wetlands, the generally degraded Mwache Creek mangrove wetland sediment trapping efficiency is low as the average is about 30% for the highly degraded backwater zone mangrove forest and 65% in the moderately degraded frontwater zone mangrove forest. 相似文献

A mid-lake sample is the conventional sampling strategy used in lake chemistry monitoring programs. Hence, addressing the question of how representative a mid-lake sample is of in-lake conditions is important for interpreting changes in long-term monitoring programs. Our hypotheses were that; (i) the location of a sampling site within a lake will affect its representativity and (ii) a mid-lake sample could be considered representative of average surface water physico-chemistry. We focused on the surface water chemistry in 34 Swedish lakes. To obtain a wide diversity of lake types, the lakes were classified according to mean depth, water residence time, and three main ecoregions. Two sampling seasons were selected, representative of high and low biological activity and stratified and non-stratified conditions, respectively. Ten samples were collected in each lake. The mid-lake samples differed significantly from the nine remaining samples in less than 4% of the total number of two-sample t-tests performed. Samples collected close to lake inlets differed from the other samples more often than samples collected in the central parts of the lakes. We concluded that the location of a sampling site within a lake may affect the sample's representativity of lake water chemistry, and that a mid-lake surface water sample could be considered representative of surface water chemistry. 相似文献

Concentrations of antimony in invertebrates and small mammals from grasslands in the vicinity of an antimony smelter were significantly elevated compared to a control site. Higher concentrations of antimony were recorded in liver, lung and kidney tissue of herbivorous and insectivorous mammals from the contaminated sites. However, there is little evidence of bioaccumulation of antimony in food chains represented by the soil-vegetation-invertebrate-insectivore pathway of the grasslands, and little indication of significant accumulation by herbivorous mammals despite marked contamination of their diet. 相似文献

Bottom sediment cores collected from two closely spaced locations in the depositional basin of Hamilton Harbour (Lake Ontario, Canada) were analyzed for organic matter, bulk density, heavy metals and phosphorus concentrations. Combined data on dredging and steel production records in relation to core composition, together with (210)Pb dating were used to develop core chronology. Identification and enumeration of chironomid taxa and molluscs in both cores were carried out to interpret the paleoenvironmental conditions in the harbour. Chemical, geochronological and paleolimnological profiles of investigated cores indicate perturbation of the natural sedimentation processes by dredging and spoil disposal, with definite evidence of an infill of extrinsic littoral sediments. Decreasing metal concentrations in sediments reflect a positive response of sediments to decreased metal loadings to the harbour. The recent sediment accumulation rates, estimated from the (210)Pb profiles of the two cores, are 38 and 97 mg cm(-2) year(-1). Mass sedimentation rates of the pre-dredging era were higher (189 and 142 mg cm(-2) year(-1)) due to intensive harbour activities, municipal development and intensive crop production in the late 1800s. 相似文献

The chemistry of sulfide mine tailings treated with potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) in aqueous slurry has been investigated. The reaction system is believed to parallel a geochemical oxidation in which ferrate ion replaces oxygen. This chemical system utilized in a pipeline (as a plug flow reactor) may have application eliminating the potential for tailings to leach acid while recovering the metal from the tailings. Elemental analyses were performed using an ICP spectrometer for the aqueous phase extract of the treated tailings; and an SEM-EDX for the tailing solids. Solids were analyzed before and after treatments were applied. ICP shows that as the mass ratio of ferrate ion to tailings increases, the concentration of metals in the extract solution increases; while EDX indicates a corresponding decrease in sulfur content of the tailing solids. The extraction of metal and reduction in sulfide content is significant. The kinetic timeframe is on the order of minutes. 相似文献
