The fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) is considered a major replacement to methyl bromide, which is to be phased out of use in the United States by 2005. The main purpose of this study was to evaluate soil-water partitioning of 1,3-D in two California agricultural soils (Salinas clay loam and Arlington sandy loam). The partition coefficients (Kd and Kf) were determined by directly measuring the concentration of 1,3-D in the solid phase (Cs) and aqueous phase (Cw) after batch equilibration. In the Salinas clay loam, the Kf of cis-1,3-D in adsorption and desorption isotherms was 0.47 and 0.54, respectively, with respective values of 0.39 and 0.49 for trans-1,3-D. This slight hysteric effect suggests that a different range of forces are involved in the adsorption and desorption process. Since n was near unity in the Freundlich equation, the Freundlich isotherms can also be approximated using the liner isotherm. At 25 degrees C, the Kd of the 1,3-D isomers in both soils ranged from 0.46 to 0.56, and the Koc (organic matter partition coefficient) ranged from 58 to 70. The relatively low Kd values and a Koc that falls within the range of 50-150, suggests that 1,3-D is weakly sorbed and highly mobile in these soils. Understanding the sorption behavior of 1,3-D in soil is important when developing fumigation practices to reduce the movement of 1,3-D to the air and groundwater.  相似文献

The current study evaluated the technical feasibility of applying TiO2 photocatalysis to the removal of low-ppb concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly associated with non-occupational indoor air quality issues. A series of experiments was conducted to evaluate five parameters (relative humidity (RH), hydraulic diameter (HD), feeding type (FT) for VOCs, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) reactor material (RM), and inlet port size (IPS) of PCO reactor) in relation to the PCO destruction efficiencies of the selected target VOCs. None of the target VOCs exhibited any significant dependence on the RH, which is inconsistent with a previous study where, under conditions of low humidity and a ppm toluene inlet level, a drop in the PCO efficiency was reported with a decreasing humidity. However, the other four parameters (HD, RM, FT, and IPS) were found to be important for better VOC removal efficiencies as regards the application of TiO2 photocatalytic technology for cleansing non-occupational indoor air. The PCO destruction of VOCs at concentrations associated with non-occupational indoor air quality issues was up to nearly 100%, and the CO generated during PCO was a negligible addition to indoor CO levels. Accordingly, a PCO reactor would appear to be an important tool in the effort to improve non-occupational indoor air quality.  相似文献

Production dynamics of eelgrass, Zostera marina was examined in two bay systems (Koje Bay and Kosung Bay) on the south coast of the Korean peninsula, where few seagrass studies have been conducted. Dramatically reduced eelgrass biomass and growth have been observed during summer period on the coast of Korea, and we hypothesized that the summer growth reduction is due to increased water temperature and/or reduced light and nutrient availabilities. Shoot density, biomass, morphological characteristics, leaf productivities, and tissue nutrient content of eelgrass were measured monthly from June 2001 to April 2003. Water column and sediment nutrient concentrations were also measured monthly, and water temperature and underwater irradiance were monitored continuously at seagrass canopy level. Eelgrass shoot density, biomass, and leaf productivities exhibited clear seasonal variations, which were strongly correlated with water temperature. Optimal water temperature for eelgrass growth in the present study sites was about 15–20°C during spring period, and eelgrass growths were inhibited at the water temperature above 20°C during summer. Daily maximum underwater photon flux density in the study sites was usually much higher than the light saturation point of Z. marina previously reported. Densities of each terminal, lateral, and reproductive shoot showed their unique seasonal peak. Seasonal trends of shoot densities suggest that new eelgrass shoots were created through formation of lateral shoots during spring and a part of the vegetative shoots was transformed into flowering shoots from March. Senescent reproductive shoots were detached around June, and contributed to reductions of shoot density and biomass during summer period. Ambient nutrient level appeared to provide an adequate reserve of nutrient for eelgrass growth throughout the experimental period. The relationships between eelgrass growth and water temperature suggested that rapid reductions of eelgrass biomass and growth during summer period on the south coast of the Korean peninsula were caused by high temperature inhibition effects on eelgrass growth during this season.  相似文献

Soil blocks from 18 paddy fields around three Korean nuclear power plant sites were put into lysimeters. Greenhouse experiments were carried out to investigate the (137)Cs transfer from these paddy soils to rice plants for its deposition at different growth stages. A solution of (137)Cs was applied to the flooded lysimeters at 2-3 different stages. The applied (137)Cs was mixed with the topsoil only at the pre-transplanting application. The transfer was quantified with a transfer factor based on the unit-area deposition (TF(a), m(2)kg(-1)-dry). The TF(a) in the pre-transplanting application showed a remarkable variation with the soils. However, the differences in the mean values among the study sites were not statistically significant. The straw TF(a) was 2-3 times higher than the corresponding seed value. The early-tillering stage and booting stage applications resulted in a higher transfer than the pre-transplanting application by factors of, on an average, 2 and 16 for the straws, and 3 and 25 for the hulled seeds, respectively. The (137)Cs transfer was found to correlate negatively with the soil pH and positively with the organic matter content. Based on the present results, the representative (137)Cs TF(a) values for the rice are proposed for use in the whole of Korea for the deposition at three different growth stages.  相似文献

Kinetic tests on the pyrolysis of nylon-6 taken from fresh (new) fishing nets and waste fishing nets were conducted using thermogravimetric analysis at heating rates of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 degrees C/min. The main region of decomposition of both materials was between 340 and 440 degrees C at each heating rate. The region of decomposition for the nylon-6 from the waste fishing nets was slightly lower than that of the fresh fishing nets. The result shows that the value of activation energies increased from 128 to 433 kJ mol(-1) as the conversion of the pyrolysis reaction increased from 5% to 95%. Nylon-6 from the fresh fishing nets was pyrolyzed in a micro-scale tubing bomb reactor for 60, 80 and 100 min at 440 degrees C. The yield of pyrolyzed gases increased from 3.94 to 5.50 wt% with reaction time. The selectivity to specific hydrocarbons was not detected from the pyrolyzed oil and the carbon number distribution of the pyrolyzed oil was random.  相似文献

The biomass of the brown seaweed, Ecklonia sp., is capable of reducing Cr(VI) to Cr(III). However, very little is known about the mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by the biomass. The aims of the present investigation were to enhance the Cr(VI)-reducing capacity of the biomass using various chemical treatments and to elucidate the mechanisms governing Cr(VI) reduction. Among the various chemical treatments, acid-treatment showed the best performance with regards the improvement of Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous phase, while organic solvent-treatment significantly improved the removal efficiency of total Cr in the equilibrium state. Based on FTIR study, the biomass was subjected to chemical modification of its amino and carboxyl groups, to examine their roles in the Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous phase. Methylation of the amino group significantly decreased the Cr(VI) removal rate, but amination of the carboxyl group significantly increased the Cr(VI) removal rate. Meanwhile, esterification of the carboxyl group and carboxylation of the amino group decreased the Cr(VI) removal rate, but the former showed a more negative effect than the latter. These findings indicated that the amino and carboxyl groups take part in the Cr(VI) removal from the aqueous phase. In conclusion, mechanisms for direct and indirect Cr(VI) removal are proposed, and some aspects for the application of this biomass to Cr(VI) detoxification are discussed.  相似文献

Of the three species of hirundine that breed sympatrically across the U.K., one, the barn swallow, has outer tail feathers elongated into streamers, whereas the other two species, the house martin and the sand martin, do not. The tail streamer of the barn swallow is regarded as a classic example of a sexually selected trait. Recent evidence, however, has suggested that streamers may have evolved largely through natural selection for enhanced flight performance and increased maneuverability. We tested the hypotheses that small streamers (1) increase performance in turning flight, but (2) decrease performance in flight variables related to velocity. We manipulated the lengths of house martin outer tail feathers and measured changes in their free-flight performance, using stereo-video to reconstruct the birds" three-dimensional flight paths. Five flight variables were found to best describe individual variation in flight performance. Of these five, the three variables determining maneuverability predicted that flight performance would be optimized by a 6- to 10-mm increase in the length of the outer tail feathers. In contrast, for mean velocity and mean acceleration, extension of the outer tail feathers appears to have a detrimental effect on flight performance. We suggest that the initial selection pressure for streamers in ancestral short-tailed "barn swallows" was via natural selection for increased maneuverability. In addition, we propose that the benefits of increased maneuverability have differed between hirundines in the past, such that the cost of increasing the length of the outer tail feather has, to date, outweighed the benefits of doing so in streamerless hirundines. The distribution and structure of heterotrophic protist communities and size-fractionated chlorophyll a were studied during the Korea Deep Ocean Study 98 (KODOS 98) research expedition (July 1998) in the northeast equatorial Pacific Ocean (5–11°N). Areas of convergence and divergence formed at the boundaries of the South Equatorial Current (SEC), North Equatorial Current (NEC), and North Equatorial Counter Current (NECC) during the expedition. Water column physicochemical characteristics significantly influenced the size structure of heterotrophic protist communities. Intense vertical mixing and high nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations characterized SEC and NECC areas, which were affected by converging and diverging water masses, respectively. Nanophytoplankton dominated in SEC and NECC areas; both areas also had relatively high heterotrophic protist biomasses (average 743 µg C m–2). NEC areas were characterized by a stratified vertical structure, low nutrient and chlorophyll a concentrations, and picophytoplankton dominance. The heterotrophic protist biomass in NEC areas averaged 414 µg C m–2; nanoprotists (<20 µm) dominated the community. The nanoprotist biomass comprised 49–54% of the total heterotrophic protist biomass in SEC/NECC areas and 67–72% in NEC areas. The biomass of heterotrophic protists was higher in SEC/NECC areas than in NEC areas, but the relative importance of nanoprotists was greater in NEC areas than in SEC/NECC areas. Heterotrophic dinoflagellates were dominant components of the <20 µm and >20 µm size classes in both water columns. The biomass of heterotrophic protists significantly correlated with the net-, nano-, and picophytoplankton biomass in SEC/NECC areas and with the nano- and picophytoplankton biomass in NEC areas. Heterotrophic protists and phytoplankton also showed strong positive correlation in the study area. The size structure of the phytoplankton biomass coincided with that of heterotrophic protists; the heterotrophic protist biomass positively correlated with the protists prey source. These relationships suggest that the community structure of heterotrophic protists and the microbial food web depended on size classes within the phytoplankton biomass. Microzooplankton grazing and phytoplankton growth rates were higher in SEC/NECC areas than in NEC areas. In contrast, the potential primary production grazed by microzooplankton was relatively high in NEC areas (127.3%) compared with SEC/NECC areas (94.6%). If a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill is used as the foundation for a construction site, the change in the loading conditions may cause considerable compression of the landfill. Therefore, reinforcement to compensate for the loose compression nature of a MSW landfill is a very important design factor for geotechnical engineers when considering the end-use of the landfill. In this study, we discuss a possible technique for stabilizing MSW landfills through the codisposal of municipal solid waste and fly ash. To estimate the stabilization based on the compression characteristics of the codisposed landfill, we performed tests using a large compression set and experimental cells. According to the test results, if the proportion of fly ash is increased, initial and long-term compression could be reduced.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to determine the presence of unregulated organic chemicals in reclaimed water using complementary targeted and broad spectrum approaches. Eleven of 12 targeted human pharmaceuticals, antioxidants, and plasticizers, and 27 tentatively identified non-target organic chemicals, were present in secondary effluent entering tertiary treatment trains at a wastewater treatment plant and two water reclamation facilities. The removal of these compounds by three different tertiary treatment trains was investigated: coagulant-assisted granular media filtration (California Title-22 water, 22 CCR 60301-60357; Barclay [2006]), lime clarification/reverse osmosis (lime/ RO), and microfiltration-reverse osmosis (MF/RO). Carbamazepine, clofibric acid, gemfibrozil, ibuprofen, p-toluenesulfonamide, caffeine, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), and N-butyl benzenesulfonamide (N-BBSA) were present at low to high nanogram-per-liter levels in Title 22 water. The lime/RO product waters contained lower concentrations of clofibric acid, ibuprofen, caffeine, BHA, and N-BBSA (<10 to 71 ng/L) than their Title 22 counterparts. The MF/RO treatment reduced concentrations to levels below their detection limits, although BHT was present in MF/RO product water from one facility. The presence of the target analytes in two surface waters used as raw drinking water sources and a recharged groundwater was also examined. Surface waters used as raw drinking water sources contained caffeine, BHA, BHT, and N-BBSA, while recharged groundwater contained BHT, BHA, and N-BBSA. Nontarget compounds in recharged groundwater appeared to be attenuated with increased residence time in the aquifer.  相似文献
