The queenless ant Pristomyrmex pungens has an unusual social structure, in which all workers reproduce parthenogenetically and help others. Laboratory experiments manipulating the proportion of post-reproductive foragers in the colony at various rates suggested that colonies with 5–10% forager ratios had the maximum efficiency per-worker. This result suggests that the cooperative colonies may be maintained by colony-level natural selection. Non-cooperative mutants that oviposit but do not forage should increase in relative frequency in the colony in the short term. However, decreased colony productivity and the resulting competition among colonies might eliminate colonies dominated by such mutants in the long term. P. pungens has a viscous population without migration between colonies, which may facilitate this process. 相似文献

In temperate regions, older eusocial hymenopteran females with annual life cycles (annual-temperate) tend to dominate younger females, a behavior demonstrated by many Polistes. However, in queenless ponerine ants and primitively eusocial tropical wasps (perennial/tropical), a younger female can be dominant and occasionally takes over from the older, most dominant reproductive female, the alpha. We investigated these patterns using an inclusive fitness model. The most important difference between the above two cases lay in the length of individual life compared with colony life. Colonies dissolve before winter in the annual-temperate case, so the expected future tenure of the replacement alpha is never longer than that of the original alpha. This makes the non-reproductive subordinate tactic more advantageous for individuals that emerge later in the season because of the fitness cost of superseding. The perennial/tropical case does not have a clear upper limit for colony longevity, so the model predicts that late-born younger daughters are more likely to challenge their mother-alpha because of the expected long future tenure of the new alpha compared with the small indirect cost of the mothers reproductive failure. To switch tactics from being a subordinate to being the new alpha is only optimal in some situations. The high mortality rate of subordinate workers does not qualitatively alter the above pattern. The specific sexual production schedule of the colony sometimes affects the optimal behavior of females in the perennial/tropical case, and older individuals can dominate younger ones when the end of current round of sexual production is imminent.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at 相似文献

Past dioxin (coplanar polychlorinated biphenyl (Co-PCB), 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin (PCDD) and 2,3,7,8-substituted polychlorinated dibenzofuran (PCDF)) fluxes recorded in dated aquatic-sediment cores were analyzed using principal component analysis (PCA). The data set consisted of samples from four cores collected from the Kanto region of Japan. Time trends and spatial differences in the dioxin flux were examined, and the potential relationship to emission sources was investigated. Twenty-five compounds and 58 core slices, corresponding to the later half of the 20th century, were subjected to the analysis. The PCA of both log-transformed and maximum-value-standardized data successfully divided the dioxin compounds into a small number of groups, and three similar clusters of Co-PCBs, PCDDs and penta- to hepta-CDFs were identified. PCB formulations used in the past are judged to have been responsible for the major part of the Co-PCB flux recorded in the sediment cores. However, the relationship to emission sources needs further investigation. It is suggested that most 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDDs and PCDFs are different from Co-PCBs in their emission sources or movements in the environment. The subcore clusters obtained from the PCA of log-transformed data show that the cores from different sampling areas exhibited distinct dioxin fluxes and compositions. Common time trends among the cores were more effectively summarized by the PCA of maximum-value-standardized data focusing on relative time trends. Bioconcentration factors (BCF) for pentachlorophenol (PCP) and 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) were determined at five different concentrations of the chemicals, between 0.1 and 10 microg/l (PCP), 0.3 and 30 microg/l (2,4-DCP), in the ambient water. Medaka were exposed to each chemicals in a continuous-flow system during the embryonic development period and 60 days after hatching from eggs collected in the laboratory. Both the exposure time and the aqueous concentrations are much more realistic and closer to natural aquatic environments than those used in conventional BCF studies. The BCF values of PCP were from (4.9+/-2.8)x10(3) at the aqueous concentration of 0.074+/-0.028 microg/l to (2.1+/-1.4)x10(3) at 9.70+/-0.56 microg/l. The BCF value of 2,4-DCP were from (3.4+/-3.0)x10(2) at 0.235+/-0.060 microg/l to 92+/-27 at 27.3+/-1.6 microg/l. Generally, BCF values increased as the aqueous concentrations of PCP or 2,4-DCP decreased. This finding suggests that a relatively low and realistic aqueous concentration of these compounds is necessary to more accurately determine their BCF values in natural aquatic environments. Summary
Technomyrmex albipes makes huge polydomous colonies which consist of up to several millions of adults. In field colonies, dealate queens are rare or absent, though winged males and winged females emerge annually (synchronously) in large numbers from late may to mid June. Field and laboratory observations showed that the reproduction of established colonies was performed by wingless females inseminated by wingless males from the same colony. Dissections and morphological examinations revealed that wingless females are workers with no spermatheca and intercastes with a spermatheca. Most intercastes were inseminated, had developed ovaries, and seemed to reproduce, while workers did not seem to reproduce. Extranidal tasks were performed only by workers. Approximately half of the adult population were intercastes, and wingless males represented only a small portion of all adults, the rest being nonreproductive workers. Intercastes and wingless males were produced throughout the year except in winter. The winged females and males copulate outside the nest only after the nuptial flight and the dealate females are able to perform independent founding, but they are also eventually supplanted by intercastes. The adoption of dealate queens by an established natal colony did not seem to occur. Thus we infer that in this species the winged reproductives disperse and found new colonies, while inbred wingless reproductives allow the enlargement and budding of colonies. This species has a special trophic-flow system. There is no trophallaxis among adults, and nutrient transfer from adults to other colony members is achieved exclusively by specialized trophic eggs. All females (dealate queens, intercastes, and workers) seem to produce trophic eggs. This aphid-like life cycle, i.e., the occurrence of both winged and wingless reproductive forms, may have evolved as an adaptation supporting the development of secondary polygyny and polydomy.Offprint requests to: K. The concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs) in plant leaves, soils in which they grow, and mother rocks were determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES). Concentration levels of REEs in most plants were low. However, one of the herb species, pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) and two species of ferns (Dicranopteris dichotoma and Athyrium yokoscence) revealed relatively high concentrations of REEs. In the case of pokeweed, the REE distribution pattern reflected well that of its soils. On the whole, high concentrations of REEs in plants were related to REE concentrations in the soils in which they grow. These observations are promising to evaluate the possible contamination of environment by REEs resulting from their increased usage in modern industry. 相似文献

The carcinogenic amino-alpha-carbolines, 2-amino-9H-pyrido[2,3-b]indole and AalphaC, have been measured in airborne particles, rain water, soil and cigarette-smoke-polluted indoor air by high-performance liquid chromatography. These carcinogens were found in all kinds of environmental samples examined, although MeAalphaC was not detected in soil. Considering the present results, together with the previous findings that these carcinogens were present in foodstuffs, cigarette smoke and diesel-exhaust particles, amino-alpha-carbolines are likely to be ubiquitous environmental pollutants. The imposex promotion activities of six organotin compounds--tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT), monobutyltin (MBT), triphenyltin (TPT), diphenyltin (DPT) and monophenyltin (MPT)--were examined by injection experiments with the rock shell, Thais clavigera (Prosobranchia; Muricidae). TPT and TBT had strong effects on the development of imposex in the rock shell (p<0.001). The other organotin compounds (DBT, MBT, DPT and MPT) had no or less effects on the development of imposex in T. clavigera. The difference between the effects of TPT and TBT was statistically insignificant (p>0.01). The effects of these compounds are estimated, from the relationships between TBT or TPT concentration in tissue and mean penis length of females after injections, to be approximately the same. 相似文献

Fifteen trace impurities, including a novel cyclohexene derivative, have been identified and quantified in samples of an industrial grade of the oestrogen-active compound 4,4'-isopropylidene diphenol (bisphenol A). All of these compounds, like bisphenol A itself, possess phenolic hydroxyl groups para to other substituents and all thus might also have oestrogenic properties. Published studies on the endocrine disrupting properties of bisphenol A have not considered potentially active impurities but full assessment of the oestrogenicity of bisphenol A, as it is used commercially, will become possible when adequate supplies of these compounds are available through synthesis. 相似文献
