Under pressure from public opinion, the attitude of companies toward environmental issues has changed considerably since the 1970s. Over the past decades, there have been three distinct generations of environmental strategies and indicators. Floods and droughts are natural phenomena for which the risks of occurrence are likely to continue to grow. Increasing levels of exposure and insufficient adaptive capacity are among the factors responsible for the rising vulnerability. The former is conditioned by anthropopressure (e.g., economic development of flood–prone areas) and adverse effects of climate change; scenarios for future climates indicate the possibility of amplified water–related extremes. This article presents the current situation of coping with extreme hydrological events within the pressure–state–response framework. Among promising response strategies, the role of forecast and warning, and of watershed management are reviewed. Sample success stories and lessons learnt related to hydrological extremes are given and policy implications discussed.  相似文献

The value placed by the public on the nation's rural landscapes is emphasised by vociferous criticism of insensitive, large‐scale afforestation. As forestry causes massive changes in the landscape in the short term, with results that last for decades, the opportunity provided to improve and conserve should be positively grasped. There is evidence that concensus exists over a considerable part of landscape and design, and this paper explores some of the major factors in landscape design which are consistently important in forest landscapes.  相似文献

Elevated levels of total glutathione and enhanced activities of glutathione reductase and ascorbate peroxidase were found in needles of red spruce which had been exposed to acidic mists. Reduced levels of ascorbate were also detected. Such observations suggest that oxidative stress is involved in processes which resist foliar injury caused by acidic misting. Different ionic compositions of the acidic mists applied had pronounced effects on the levels of these antioxidants and the activities of related enzymes. Sulphate was found to be most effective in causing increases in glutathione, while additions of ammonium and/or nitrate mitigated the effects of sulphuric acid. Moreover, it is the composition of ions in the applied mists, rather than the levels of acidity, that determines the extent of the overall response of red spruce. By contrast, although acidic mists caused similar increases in glutathione content of Norway spruce needles, no statistically significant changes of ascorbate or related enzymic activities were found.  相似文献

Northern Botswana and adjacent areas, have the world's largest population of African elephant (Loxodonta africana). However, a 100 years ago elephants were rare following excessive hunting. Simultaneously, ungulate populations were severely reduced by decease. The ecological effects of the reduction in large herbivores must have been substantial, but are little known. Today, however, ecosystem changes following the increase in elephant numbers cause considerable concern in Botswana. This was the background for the "BONIC" project, investigating the interactions between the increasing elephant population and other ecosystem components and processes. Results confirm that the ecosystem is changing following the increase in elephant and ungulate populations, and, presumably, developing towards a situation resembling that before the reduction of large herbivores. We see no ecological reasons to artificially change elephant numbers. There are, however, economic and social reasons to control elephants, and their range in northern Botswana may have to be artificially restricted.  相似文献

Chelate-enhanced phytoremediation has been proposed as an effective tool for the extraction of heavy metals from soils by plants. However, side-effects related to the addition of chelates, e.g. metal leaching and effects on soil micro-organisms, were usually neglected. Therefore, greenhouse and lysimeter studies were conducted to study the phytoremedation potential of EDGA and citric acid and to evaluate its effects on microbial activity and leaching of Cd, Zn Cu and Pb. Grass, lupine and yellow mustard were grown on a moderately polluted acid (pH 4.5) sandy soil that contained 2 mg kg(-1) Cd and 200 mg kg(-1) Zn. Citric acid appeared to be degraded microbially within a few days after addition which limited its potential for long-lasting remediation studies. EDGA enhanced metal solubility but plant uptake did not increase accordingly. The metal shoot:root ratio increased upon addition of EDGA but it also reduced the net shoot and root biomass production of both lupine and yellow mustard. Bacterial biomass was higher in both the citric and EDGA treated pots but bacterial activity remained unaffected. The number of microbivorous nematodes was greatly reduced upon addition of EDGA which was most likely related to the reduced biomass production and, to a smaller extent, to the changes in the composition of the available food. Furthermore, EDGA enhanced metal leaching in the lysimeter study which could lead to groundwater pollution. To prevent these unwanted side-effects, careful management of phytoremediation methods, therefore, seems necessary.  相似文献

A new procedure to measure the total volume of emissions from heavy crude oil storage tanks is described. Tank flashing losses, which are difficult to measure, can be determined by correcting this value for working and breathing losses. The procedure uses a fan or blower to vent the headspace of the storage tank, with subsequent monitoring of the change in concentrations of oxygen or other gases. Combined with a separate determination of the reactive organic carbon (ROC) fraction in the gas, this method allows the evaluation of the total amount of ROC emitted. The operation of the system is described, and results from measurement of several storage tanks in California oil fields are presented. Our measurements are compared with those obtained using the California Air Resources Board (CARB) 150 method.  相似文献

Sludge from mining exploitation can be a source of land and water contamination in the adjacent zone. Accidents such as the break of waste mining pools in the Aznalcollar Mine (Seville, Spain) in 1998 produce important ecological disasters. In this work is presented a study of the evolution of aqua regia leachable concentration and mobility of metals in sediment samples of Guadiamar River basin from the accident date up to 2001. The application of BCR standard extraction procedures provides valuable information about the mobility and toxicity of the spill and the metal mobility in Guadiamar River polluted sediments. As a rule, themobility of several metals in the initial sludge (sulphides) is low, except for copper. Otherwise, the results of aqua regia leachable concentration and mobility of metal obtained for sediments samples indicate that the cleaning and inertisation works carried out in the zone have been adequate but insufficient, being the metal levels observed in the zone are higher than natural levels. To establish the initial impact of the spill and the mobility changes with time, mineralogical composition of the pyritic sludge and its evolution after the natural weathering and after the induction, of accelerated ageing processes by light and temperature was studied in the laboratory. Oxidation of initial sulphides to sulphates was observed. Both environmental and laboratory oxidation of the metallic sulphides increase the mobility of all metals, especially of copper, zinc and lead. The proposed laboratory procedure allows to predict the changes in mobility and therefore in toxicity that can occur at short or long term after exposure of sludge at environ-mental conditions. The mobility results in sludge and sediment samples are interpreted in terms of the mineral composition of the samples.  相似文献

Veligers ofCrepidula fornicata (L.) were reared for 12 days at constant temperatures of 15°, 20°, 25°, 30° and 35°C, and at 5 C° daily cycles of equal periodicity (COEP) over the temperature ranges 15° to 20°C, 20° to 25°C, 25° to 30°C and 30° to 35°C. COEP consisted of equal periods (6 h) of maximum temperature, minimum temperature, and uniformly increasing and decreasing temperature each 24 h period. Survival was high and not influenced by cyclic or constant temperature from 15° to 30°C. At 35°C and COEP 30° to 35°C, all larvae died before Day 6. Shell growth rate increased markedly over the range 15° to 25°C, and growth rates at cyclic temperatures in this range were intermediate between growth rates at the corresponding constant temperatures. Larvae reared at COEP 15° to 20°C and COEP 30° to 35°C had discontinuities in their shells due to inhibition of shell secretion during the adverse part of each temperature cycle. Groups ofc. fornicata veligers were exposed for 2 days to daily temperature cycles of equal and unequal periodicity in the critical 30° to 35°C range. [Cycles of unequal periodicity (COUP) consisted of unequal periods (varying between 3 and 15 h) of maximum and minimum temperature and uniformly increasing and decreasing temperature each 24 h period.] These veligers showed shell growth although their body tissue declined, as indicated by decreasing carbon content per larva. Least shell growth and most body tissue loss occurred in those cycles with the longest exposure to higher temperature. Larvae exposed for arious days to the mildest 30° to 35°C COUP (15 h at 30°C, 3 h increasing temperature, 3 h at 35°C and 3 h decreasing temperature) recovered and resumed normal growth when transferred to constant 30°C, but their growth was retarded in proportion to the number of days in the temperature cycle. Rates of shell growth of veligers in temperature cycles show an immediate effect of environmental temperature, while changes in carbon content per larva better reflect the effects of temperature on general metabolism and survival.  相似文献
