Caesalpinia echinata (brazilwood or Pernambuco wood) comprises a complex of three morphological leaf variants, characterized by differences in
the number and size of the pinnae and leaflets, and occurring in allopatric and sympatric populations. The present study evaluates
the utility of the chloroplast DNA trnL intron in a phylogenetic analysis of the three leaf variants along with other species of Caesalpinia and generic relatives. Our study supports the hypothesis that the name C. echinata designates a species complex and provides evidence that one of the forms, the highly divergent C. echinata large-leafleted variant, represents a distinct taxon. 相似文献

In a bivouacked swarm of honey bees, most individuals are quiescent while a small minority (the scouts) are active in choosing the swarm's future nest site. This study explores the way in which the members of a swarm warm their flight muscles for take-off when the swarm eventually decamps. An infrared camera was used to measure the thoracic (flight muscle) temperatures of individual bees on the surface of a swarm cluster. These are generally the coolest bees in a swarm. The warming of the surface-layer bees occurred mainly in the last 10 min before take-off. By the time a take-off began, 100% of the bees had their flight muscles heated to at least 35°C, which is sufficient to support rapid flight. Take-offs began only a few seconds after all the surface-layer bees had their flight muscles warmed to at least 35°C, but exactly how take-offs are triggered remains a mystery. 相似文献

Several authors have suggested that nitrogen-based fertilizers may be contributing to the global amphibian decline. We have studied the impact of sodium nitrite on early aquatic stages of Epidalea calamita, Pelophylax perezi and Hyla meridionalis larvae from Do?ana National Park (coastal wetland) and P. perezi from Gredos Mountain (high mountain ponds), exposed during 10 to 16 days. After 8 days of exposure all P. perezi larvae from Do?ana presented 100% mortality at 5 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-) while E. calamita larvae mortality rates were significantly lower at that concentration after 15 days. However, for H. meridionalis at day 15 no deaths were registered at 5 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-) and at 20 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-) presented intermediate mortality rates. In Do?ana the 10 d LC50 of older H. meridionalis larvae was between 20 and 30 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-) whilst for P. perezi it was below 5 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-). These results indicate inter-specific variation of the sensitivity of larval amphibians to nitrite. Gredos Mountain P. perezi larvae exposed since the egg stage were highly sensitive to nitrite, with a 16 d LC50 below 0.5 mg l(-1)N-NO2(-). The same species in Do?ana had a 15 d LC50 between 5 and mg l(-1)N-NO2(-). These results suggest that there is also intra-specific variation in sensitivity of amphibian larvae to nitrite: mountain amphibian populations appear to be more sensitive to polluted environments than coastal populations. Geographic and genetic variation and evolutionary adaptation of tolerance may also be the keys to variation amongst populations of the same species. 相似文献

A new index named Air Quality Balance Index (AQBI), which is able to characterise the amount of pollution level in a selected area, is proposed. This index is a function of the ratios between pollutant concentration values and their standards; it aims at identifying all situations in which there is a possible environmental risk even when several pollutants are below their limit values but air quality is reduced. AQBI is evaluated by using a high-resolution three-dimensional dispersion model: the air concentration for each substance is computed starting from detailed emissions sources: point, line and area emissions hourly modulated. This model is driven with accurate meteorological data from ground stations and remote sensing systems providing vertical profiles of temperature and wind; these data are integrated with wind and temperature profiles at higher altitudes obtained by a Local Area Model. The outputs of the dispersion model are compared with pollutant concentrations provided by measuring stations, in order to recalibrate emission data. A three-dimensional high resolution grid of AQBI data is evaluated for an industrial area close to Alessandria (Northern Italy), assessing air quality and environmental conditions. Performance of AQBI is compared with the Air Quality Index (AQI) developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. AQBI, computed taking into account all pollutants, is able to point out situations not evidenced by AQI, based on a preset limited number of substances; therefore, AQBI is a good tool for evaluating the air quality either in urban and in industrial areas. Environmental contamination has become a global problem of increasing intensity due to the exponential growth of industrialization. One main debated issue is the metal contamination of rivers receiving Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) from active/abandoned mines. In order to assess the quality of lotic systems, diatoms are commonly used, as their assemblage modifies on the basis of changes in environmental parameters. Benthic diatom changes were analyzed along the metal-impacted Gromolo Torrent (Liguria, NW Italy) with the aim of understanding the effects of input from the abandoned Libiola Cu mine. The results support the hypothesis that metals from AMD lead to massive changes in diatoms, resulting in low biological diversity and in a shift of dominance, passing from the genera Cymbella and Cocconeis to more tolerant and opportunistic species, such as Achnanthidium minutissimum and Fragilaria rumpens. The high concentrations of labile metals, measured through Diffusion Gradients in Thin-films (DGT) immediately downstream of the two AMD inputs in the torrent, corresponded to a sudden decrease in the presence of diatoms, indicating the possible reaching of acute toxic levels. In particular, A. minutissimum dominated the mining area and was positively correlated with Cu and Zn; whereas F. rumpens bloomed downstream of this area, where the metal content was diluted, and was positively correlated with As and Pb. Finally, an important abundance of Nitzschia palea and teratological forms of A. minutissimum and F. rumpens were observed downstream from the mine, indicating that metals may have an important impact on diatoms up to the torrent mouth. 相似文献
