Within southern Africa, many households are facing increasing pressures as they deal with multiple challenges such as low
employment, high levels of disease, environmental resources under pressure and changing political landscapes. To respond to
the needs of different individuals and households, it is important to define the nature of their vulnerability. An increasing
amount of theoretical and empirical work on the concept of ‘vulnerability’ has led to a range of definitions, indicators and
measurement tools, which have come to characterise this field of study. As a result, there is no one general consensus. This
paper presents the results from the latest in a series of applied studies conducted since 2004 by a network of scientists
working in southern Africa, aimed at refining the definition and application of the concept of vulnerability. The study employed
a recently developed multiple-stressor model to guide the collection and analysis of data from three sites in South Africa
and Malawi. In this paper, we identify and explore five key ‘symptoms’ of vulnerability emerging from our multi-country data

Relationships among global warming potential (GWP), farmland surplus nitrogen (FSN) and income for major land uses in the
Ikushunbetsu watershed were compared using the eco-balance method. An empirical model was created for carbon dioxide, methane
and nitrous oxide for both uplands and paddy rice using monitoring data from 22 fields. The greenhouse gas emissions were
converted into GWP, whereas yield and FSN were obtained from interviews with farmers and a literature survey. Land use distribution
was obtained by ground surveys in 2002, 2005 and 2007. The analysis showed that paddy rice and soybeans were characterized
by a high GWP, low FSN and high income, whereas onions and vegetables had a high FSN but low GWP and moderate income. Wheat
showed a negative GWP in some years, and abandoned areas always exhibited negative values. The total GWPs for the region were
14,184, 11,085 and 8,337 Mg CO2 year−1 for 2002, 2005 and 2007, respectively. The contribution of paddy rice to GWP was highest, ranging from 40 to 75%. To find
optimal land use combinations that provide higher incomes and lower GWPs and FSNs than at present, all possible land use combinations
were analyzed by changing the land use proportion from 0 to 100% at an interval of 10%. The number of land use combinations
meeting the requirements in the three investigated years was 205. Abandoned area, which had the smallest environmental load,
was included in every land use combination, indicating that land uses with low environmental impacts should be maintained
at a certain proportion to mitigate the environmental load accompanying land uses with high production. 相似文献

INTENTION, GOAL, SCOPE, BACKGROUND: As the strong negative health effect of exposure to the inhalable particulate matter PM10 in the urban environment has been confirmed, the study of the mass concentrations, physico-chemical characteristics, sources, as well as spatial and temporal variation of atmospheric aerosol particles becomes very important. OBJECTIVE: This work is a pilot study to assess the concentration level of ambient suspended particulate matter, with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 microm, in the Belgrade central urban area. Average daily concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 have been measured at three representative points in the city between June 2002 and December 2002. The influence of meteorological parameters on PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations was analyzed, and possible pollution sources were identified. METHODS: Suspended particles were collected on Pure Teflon filters by using a Mini-Vol low-volume air sampler (Airmetrics Co., Inc.; 5 l min(-1) flow rate). Particle mass was determined gravimetrically after 48 h of conditioning in a desiccator, in a Class 100 clean room at the temperature T = 20 degrees C and at about 50% constant relative humidity (RH). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Analysis of the PM10 data indicated a marked difference between season without heating--(summer; mean value 56 microg m(-3)) and heating season--(winter; mean value 96 microg m3); 62% of samples exceeded the level of 50 microg m(-3). The impact of meteorological factors on PM concentrations was not immediately apparent, but there was a significant negative correlation with the wind speed. CONCLUSIONS: The PM10 and PM2.5 mass concentrations in the Belgrade urban area had high average values (77 microg m(-3) and 61 microg m(-3)) in comparison with other European cities. The main sources of particulate matter were traffic emission, road dust resuspension, and individual heating emissions. When the air masses are coming from the SW direction, the contribution from the Obrenovac power plants is evident. During days of exceptionally severe pollution, in both summer and winter periods, high production of secondary aerosols occurred, as can be seen from an increase in PM2.5 in respect to PM10 mass concentration. RECOMMENDATION AND OUTLOOK: The results obtained gave us the first impression of the concentration level of particulate matter, with an aerodynamic diameter of less than 10 microm, in the Belgrade ambient air. Due to measured high PM mass concentrations, it is obvious that it would be very difficult to meet the EU standards (EEC 1999) by 2010. It is necessary to continue with PM10 and PM2.5 sampling; and after comprehensive analysis which includes the results of chemical and physical characterization of particles, we will be able to recommend effective control measures in order to improve air quality in Belgrade. 相似文献

Optimal conditions for bioremediation of investigation‐derived wastes from petroleum‐impacted soils (PIS) were determined through biotreatability experiments. The PIS was collected as extruded cores obtained during sample drilling. These samples were processed into workable media prior to treatment in bioreactors. Soil moisture content in the bioreactors was adjusted to 30 percent, 40 percent, 50 percent (control), and 60 percent, dry‐weight basis, and nutrient levels were adjusted by applying fertilizer, yielding carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) ratios of 20:1, 10:1, and 5:1, versus a control C:N ratio of 140:1. Temperature, pH, viable bacterial plate counts, contaminant degradation rate, and microbial respiration were monitored. Concentrations of three selected branched alkanes in the aviation fuel contaminant, measured by gas chromatography, decreased for most treatments. The greatest degradation occurred with a moisture content of 40 percent and C:N ratio of 5:1. Increased contaminant degradation was consistent with increased microbial activity measured by respiration. There was poorer correlation between contaminant degradation and viable plate counts, which suggests that respirometry is a better measure of activity of the microbial population responsible for contaminant degradation. General plate counts, which enumerate only a fraction of the total population, may not be a reliable quantitative indicator of the actual microorganism population that is responsible for degradation. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Our behaviour towards the environment depends on our beliefs about the environment. Beliefs, however, are a subject of change, particularly during important life transitions such as the transition to adolescence, because this is a period when an individual develops the ability of complex and abstract reasoning. Understanding this transition is therefore crucial for understanding and predicting the attitudes and courses of action in terms of sustainable development later in life. Due to many methodological constraints, the number of empirical studies examining these issues is very limited; the current study aimed to collect empirical data to explore the origins of our beliefs about the environment-related issues. We devised a picture association test and used it to compare children’s and adolescents’ beliefs about our environment in the context of the means of transportation. A large sample of 2264 participants aged 6–18 years took part in the study. The data supported the claim that children’s beliefs about environment share egocentric properties. The findings represent an important puzzle into the whole picture of children’s thinking and offer us great insight into the origins of beliefs about environment-related questions in adults. Commonly occurring natural events become natural disasters when they affect the population through death and injury, and/or
through the destruction of natural and physical capital on which people rely for their livelihood and quality of life. Climate
change plays a role in that it tends to increase the frequency and intensity of weather-related natural disasters. Additionally,
climate change may put people at risk by influencing access to water, coastal flooding, disease and hunger, and leaving them
with a more degraded environment, leading, in turn, to increased vulnerability. The purpose of this paper is to present a
review and synthesis of the literature and case studies addressing differential impacts of climate change-related natural
disasters on a society and its economy. Developed and developing countries show different vulnerabilities to natural disasters.
Even within countries, impacts vary significantly across population and economic sectors. When losses from natural disasters
are large, their cumulative effect can have notable macroeconomic impacts, which feed back to further pronounce existing income
inequalities and lower income levels. Impacts tend to be most pronounced for women, the young and elderly, and people of ethnic
or racial minorities.
