Two cases with a large cystic mass within the placenta are reported. By ultrasonography, it was found that both women had a subchorionic hypoechoic lesion (11.0 × 4.8 × 4.0 cm and 6.6 × 3.7 × 2.2 cm, respectively) at 24 and 35 weeks of gestation, respectively. In both cases, turbulent blood flow generated by a pulsatile jet flow (pulse rate; 40 to 60 beats per minute) into the cystic lesion seen on real-time imaging and lesions being low intensity on T1-weighted and isointensity on T2-weighted magnetic resonance image suggested that they contained fresh maternal blood. In both cases, the sonolucency of the lesions did not change until cesarean deliveries of females, both of whom were small-for-gestational-age infants (1940 g at 37 weeks and 2195 g at 37 weeks, respectively). Biochemical analysis of the fluid in the cystic lesion sampled during the cesarean section in the latter case confirmed that the fluid had originated from the maternal blood. These lesions histologically corresponded to large avillous areas surrounded by normal villi. Thus, a huge placental lake was diagnosed in both cases. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

The occurrence of mate solicitation by virgin females was investigated in the butterfly Eurema
hecabe. Young (1-day-old) virgin females rarely showed mate solicitation to male model, however, old (at least 6-day-old) virgin
females frequently showed such flight. The duration of solicitation was significantly longer in older females than in younger
ones. The age-related behavioral change occurs with female oogenesis (Hiroki and Kato 1996), and such behavior may thus be
a result of female adaptation to maximize their fecundity.

It has been recognized that the involvement of local community is essential to ensure the sustainability of A/R CDM (afforestation/reforestation
clean development mechanism) project. This study verifies if the risks of non-permanence and leakage are addressed in a registered
small scale A/R CDM project in Vietnam. Workshops, interviews, and a questionnaire survey of local villagers revealed that
the project has caused a shortage of land for conventional activities such as grazing, fuel wood collection and shifting cultivation,
and consequently posed the risks of project non-permanence and leakage. It is suggested that participation of all stakeholders
in the community to the A/R CDM project beyond existing land tenure and adequate carbon benefit sharing according to the level
of contribution to the project are required to reduce the risk of non permanence. To ensure the participation, the community
should have capability such as consensus building and collective action. Leakage would be minimized if the community has alternative
measures to the conventional activities before starting the project. We argue that it is necessary to first develop a community’s
capabilities in the readiness phase of any A/R CDM project in order to reduce the risks for the project sustainability, and

Although snappers (Lutjanidae) are commercially important fishery resources in tropical and subtropical waters, their home
range size and its spatial arrangement have not been sufficiently clarified. In the present study, the size and spatial arrangement
of the home range of the reef-associated checkered snapper Lutjanus decussatus (Lutjanidae) were investigated by use of a portable GPS receiver. In a 120 m × 120 m quadrat established on a section of
the fringing reef of Ishigaki Island, 29 individuals of the species were identified by their color pattern and individuals
were divided into five arbitrary size classes (class 1 <10 cm TL ≤ class 2 <15 cm TL ≤ class 3 <20 cm TL ≤ class 4 <25 cm
TL ≤ class 5). Fish tracking by snorkeling was conducted with the portable GPS receiver. Site fidelity of this species was
high. Home range size ranged from 93.0 to 3638.4 m2, and there was a significant positive correlation between the home range size and fish total length. Home ranges of the same-sized
individuals abutted each other (8.8% area overlap), whereas those of different-sized individuals overlapped (44.0% area overlap).
Agonistic behavior (attack and agonistic display) was more frequently found among same-sized individuals (times of agonistic
behavior/times of all encounters × 100 = 71.3%), whereas such agonistic behavior was rarely found among different-sized individuals
(times of agonistic behavior/times of all encounters × 100 = 6.9%). These results suggest that home ranges of Lutjanus decussatus can be regarded as territories against same-sized individuals, but not different-sized individuals. The usefulness of the
fish tracking by snorkeling using a portable GPS receiver for home range size estimation and the function of the overlapping

We report the importance of informal training in introducing new post‐harvest technologies in rice farming through informal contacts by exploring answers from both in‐residence extension workers ('key farmers') and ordinary farmers in rural Cambodia. We use survey data collected in Cambodian villages between December 2012 and January 2013. While in‐residence extension workers are well motivated and informal training plays a crucial role, lack of an appropriate financial incentive for the key farmers might hamper the sustainability of the project. The relationship between otolith length and body length (total length) was examined in walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma (Pallas), collected from Pacific Ocean waters adjacent to Hokkaido, Japan, and in larvae reared from fertilized eggs. A linear relationship was found between log-transformed body length and otolith length data with two inflection points at ca. 11 mm and 100 mm total length. This relationship was found to be applicable also to samples from the Japan Sea, Bering Sea and Okhotsk Sea. The early growth pattern estimated by back-calculation of otolith increments of 1-yr fish from Funka (Uchiura) Bay (Hokkaido) accorded with that obtained from size-at-age data of 0 yr fish collected in the preceding year. Differences were found in comparisons of the back-calculated early growth pattern between samples from waters adjacent to Hokkaido, the Pacific Ocean, the Japan Sea and the Okhotsk Sea. The growth curve of the Okhotsk samples was markedly different from others, showing rapid initial growth up to about 100 d after hatching and attaining a small body size in the first year. 相似文献

The two intertidal grazers Littorina littorea and L. saxatilis occupy extensively overlapping distributions on both sides of the Atlantic. Morphological, electrophoretic and physiological evidence suggests that the direct developer L. saxatilis is more geographically differentiated than the planktonic developer L. littorea. This hypothesis was tested by collecting both species in 1980 and 1981 from three geographically separated beaches in Massachusetts, USA, marking them, and releasing them in two of the sites. Individuals from all three L. littorea populations, grown at a common site, tended to grow at similar rates, while L. saxatilis exhibited consistent population differences in individual growth. This study supports the view that L. saxatilis achieves its broad geographic distribution via locally adapted ecotypes, while L. littorea achieves its distribution by individual physiological plasticity. 相似文献

Many planktonic organisms have adaptations such as floats or lighter substances to obtain buoyancy to help them remain in
the surface layer of the ocean where photosynthetic primary production occurs and food is most abundant. The almost totally
transparent eel larvae, called leptocephali, are a unique member of the planktonic community of the surface layer, but their
ecology and physiology are poorly understood. We conducted a comparative study on the specific gravity of planktonic animals
including 25 taxa of 7 phyla of marine invertebrates and 6 taxa of leptocephali (vertebrate) to gain a broad perspective on
the buoyancy of the eggs and larval stages of the Japanese eel. The specific gravity values of the various freshly caught
marine invertebrate taxa varied widely from 1.020 to 1.425, but leptocephali had some of the lowest values (1.028–1.043).
Artificially cultured live leptocephali had even greater buoyancies with specific gravities of 1.019–1.025 that were close
to or lower than seawater, and their buoyancy showed ontogenetic changes among the different early life history stages. Leptocephali
appear to have a unique mechanism of buoyancy control by chloride cells all over body surface through osmoregulation of body
fluid contained in the extracellular matrix of transparent gelatinous glycosaminoglycans filling their bodies. This adaptation
is likely a key factor for their survival by helping them to remain in the surface layer where food particles are the most
abundant, while being transparent for predator avoidance. The ontogenetic change in buoyancy of eel eggs, leptocephali and
glass eels likely enhances their larval survival, transport, and recruitment to terrestrial freshwater habitats. 相似文献
