Concentrations of tetra- to octa-chlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans in samples collected in or near Tokyo Bay, Japan, with a densely inhabited catchment area, were congener-specifically determined and discussed. Analyzed in this study were samples of surface sediment covering the whole bay area, reference soil representing atmospheric impact, and fish, shellfish and crab commonly consumed as food. The range of concentrations were comparable to or higher than those in other parts of Japan. The origins of these compounds in the catchment area of the bay were investigated in terms of homolog and isomeric compositions in the sediment samples. Biota-sediment accumulation factors for benthic species declined as the degree of chlorination increased.  相似文献

Azinphos-methyl, carbaryl, dimethoate, phosmet and phosalone were used in apple orchards to manage apple aphid, apple maggot, woolly apple aphid and leaf eating caterpillars. Among the five insecticides evaluated, dimethoate, carbaryl and azinphosmethyl were the most toxic to the nymphs and adults of Hyaliodes vitripennis (Say) from two regions. Phosalone was the least toxic. Nymphs were more resistant than the adults. While the LC50 for dimethoate was 130 ppm for nymphs, it was 3 ppm for adults from St. Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville. There were also significant differences in the level of resistance between the two regions where the H. vitripennis were collected. At St. Alexandre the LC50 for phosalone on nymphs was 19,250 ppm whereas, at St. Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville it was 160,000 ppm.  相似文献

Wintertime atmospheric light scattering in Dallas, TX, was estimated through the use of aerosol models. Input data for the aerosol models were provided by measurements of aerosol chemistry, physical particle size distributions, and distributions of particulate sulfur by particle size, and by predictions by an atmospheric simulation model. Light scattering measurements provided a basis for testing the aerosol models. The SCAPE thermodynamic equilibrium model was used to estimate the amount of liquid water associated with particles and the ELSIE Mie scattering model was applied to estimate the resulting light scattering. The calculations were based on aerosol properties measured in Dallas during December 1994 and February 1995, and changes in scattering due to hypothetical changes in the aerosol were predicted. The predicted light scattering was compared to scattering measured by an Optec nephelometer; agreement was within 20% in every case.  相似文献

Ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B: 290-315 nm) is expected to increase as the result of stratospheric ozone depletion. Within the environmental range, UV-B effects on host plants appear to be largely a function of photomorphogenic responses, while effects on fungal pathogens may include both photomorphogenesis and damage. The effects of increased UV-B on plant-pathogen interactions has been studied in only a few pathosystems, and have used a wide range of techniques, making generalisations difficult. Increased UV-B after inoculation tends to reduce disease, perhaps due to direct damage to the pathogen, although responses vary markedly between and within pathogen species. Using Septoria tritici infection of wheat as a model system, it is suggested that even in a species that is inherently sensitive to UV-B, the effects of ozone depletion in the field are likely to be small compared with the effects of variation in UV-B due to season and varying cloud. Increased UV-B before inoculation causes a range of effects in different systems, but an increase in subsequent disease is a common response, perhaps due to changes in host surface properties or chemical composition. Although it seems unlikely that most crop diseases will be greatly affected by stratospheric ozone depletion within the limits currently expected, the lack of a detailed understanding of the mechanisms by which UV-B influences plant-pathogen interactions in most pathosystems is a significant limit to such predictions.  相似文献

Plants of Cassia siamea Lamk were grown in garden soil (control), fly-ash (100%) and fly-ash amended by various ameliorants (cowdung manure, press-mud, garden soil; 1:1, w/w). The plants survived in fly-ash (100%) though their growth was less in comparison to the treatments. Fly-ash+press-mud (1:1, w/w) proved to be the best combination as growth (total biomass, leaf number, photosynthetic area, total chlorophyll and protein) was significantly high in this treatment followed by cowdung manure and garden soil. Leaves and roots accumulated significant amount of Cu, Zn, Ni and and Fe. However, the concentration of all the metals was more in roots than leaves except Ni. Although, fly-ash contains high amount of metals but the metal uptake was more in the plants grown in fly-ash+press-mud mixture. Inspite of high metal availability in fly-ash and press-mud mixture, plant growth was good. This might be attributed to the some metal detoxification mechanism active in this treatment. The present study concluded that C. siamea seems to be a suitable plant for developing a vegetation cover on fly-ash dumps.  相似文献

In this paper, we report on techniques for sampling and measuring ethanol in both the gas and aqueous phases of the lower troposphere. In the gas phase, the best sampling conditions were ensured by adsorption on Hayesep Q with a Chromosorb W AW coated with LiCl dryer (method 1) or by cryogenic trapping (method 2). An intercomparison campaign showed good agreement between both methods under various conditions. Method 1 (adsorption on Hayesep Q with dryer) is easier to set up and to carry away from the laboratory. Method 2 (cryogenic trapping) requires longer sampling time (up to 60 min while method 1 requires only 10-15 min). Method 1 is adapted to high concentrations of ethanol (>20 ppb) and low relative humidity (<30%). Method 2 gives more accurate results than method 1 for low ethanol concentrations (1-20 ppb). Comparing these results to previous studies, it is clear that sampling with appropriate solid adsorbents or with stainless steel canisters (with appropriate humidified air and short storage time) is adapted to urban or industrial environments where ethanol concentrations are high. Cryogenic sampling must be preferred for remote places where ethanol concentrations are low. Three techniques were tested for sampling ethanol in the liquid phase, namely solid phase microextraction, purge and trap injection, and direct injection. Among those, the latter was chosen for field measurements of ethanol in rain samples at an urban location. These first ever results at an urban location show concentrations ranging from <1 to 5 microM in rains, which agree with the expected range of concentrations. However, the purge and trap method showed detection limits that were 50 times lower and should be preferred for liquid phase ethanol measurements in rural and remote locations. Combining cryogenic trapping for the gas phase (method 2) and direct injection for the liquid phase is convenient and well adapted for a multiphase study of ethanol in the atmosphere, where simultaneous measurements in both phases are needed.  相似文献

Spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) provide an unambiguous indication of atmospherically deposited contamination from industrial sources. SCP data from a 12 year annual sediment trapping and coring programme at 14 lakes based on the UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network, were used to consider temporal trends in deposition and to compare these with measured non-marine sulphate fluxes. Results show good temporal coherence across a broad area of northern UK and that SCP deposition levels and are now at their lowest since the 1940s, in agreement with modelled sulphate data. SCP fluxes show reasonable linearity with measured non-marine sulphate depositional fluxes from the nearest UK Acid Deposition Monitoring Network sites, especially over the post-flue-gas desulphurisation period, but comparisons prior to 1972 are not possible due to lack of data. We speculate on whether palaeolimnological SCP data might be used to reconstruct the history of non-marine sulphate fluxes from industrial sources.  相似文献
