Although marine protected areas can simultaneously contribute to biodiversity conservation and fisheries management, the global network is biased toward particular ecosystem types because they have been established primarily in an ad hoc fashion. The optimization of trade‐offs between biodiversity benefits and socioeconomic values increases success of protected areas and minimizes enforcement costs in the long run, but it is often neglected in marine spatial planning (MSP). Although the acquisition of spatially explicit socioeconomic data is perceived as a costly or secondary step in MSP, it is critical to account for lost opportunities by people whose activities will be restricted, especially fishers. We developed an easily reproduced habitat‐based approach to estimate the spatial distribution of opportunity cost to fishers in data‐poor regions. We assumed the most accessible areas have higher economic and conservation values than less accessible areas and their designation as no‐take zones represents a loss of fishing opportunities. We estimated potential distribution of fishing resources from bathymetric ranges and benthic habitat distribution and the relative importance of the different resources for each port of total catches, revenues, and stakeholder perception. In our model, we combined different cost layers to produce a comprehensive cost layer so that we could evaluate of trade‐offs. Our approach directly supports conservation planning, can be applied generally, and is expected to facilitate stakeholder input and community acceptance of conservation.  相似文献

Sand crabs belonging to the genus Emerita are the dominant species on sandy beaches of the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of America. The success of this genus has been attributed to the great phenotypic plasticity of life history traits that enables them to cope with swash climate variability from beach to beach. The burrowing rate and variation in carapace shape of Emerita analoga from south-central Chile were studied on a series of five sandy beaches with contrasting reflective-intermediate swash conditions (harsher swash to benign swash). Environmental sampling was carried out monthly from September 2009 to November 2010, while biological experiments were conducted in September and October 2010. A combination of field experiments, geometric morphometric tools and multivariate analysis was used to assess the relationship between burrowing behavior and carapace shape with variables of swash climate. Our results showed that (1) body shape of E. analoga is directly affected by the frequency of effluent line crossing, (2) burrowing rate of E. analoga is affected directly by shape variability, (3) burrowing rate is affected directly and indirectly by the swash climate variables: frequency of effluent line crossing and mean grain size of sediment. Thus, the physical conditions in the intertidal zone may be the main environmental constraints determining cephalothorax shape, with a wider cephalothorax on beaches with finer sand and more benign physical dynamics, and a narrower shape on beaches with coarser sand and harsher physical dynamics. The latter phenotype (narrower shape) probably allows compensating the high difficulty of burying in coarser sediments.  相似文献

Approximately 25% of globally reported shark catches occur in Atlantic pelagic longline fisheries. Strong declines in shark populations have been detected in the North Atlantic, whereas in the South Atlantic the situation is less clear, although fishing effort has been increasing in this region since the late 1970s. We synthesized information on shark catch rates (based on 871,177 sharks caught on 86,492 longline sets) for the major species caught by multiple fleets in the South Atlantic between 1979 and 2011. We complied records from fishing logbooks of fishing companies, fishers, and onboard observers that were supplied to Brazilian institutions. By using exploratory data analysis and literature sources, we identified 3 phases of exploitation in these data (Supporting Information). From 1979 to 1997 (phase A), 5 fleets (40 vessels) fished mainly for tunas. From 1998 to 2008 (phase B), 20 fleets (100 vessels) fished for tunas, swordfishes, and sharks. From 2008 to 2011 (phase C), 3 fleets (30 vessels) fished for multiple species, but restrictive measures were implemented. We used generalized linear models to standardize catch rates and identify trends in each of these phases. Shark catch rates increased from 1979 to 1997, when fishing effort was low, decreased from 1998 to 2008, when fishing effort increased substantially, and remained stable or increased from 2008 to 2011, when fishing effort was again low. Our results indicate that most shark populations affected by longlines in the South Atlantic are currently depleted, but these populations may recover if fishing effort is reduced accordingly. In this context, it is problematic that comprehensive data collection, monitoring, and management of these fisheries ceased after 2012. Concurrently with the fact that Brazil is newly identified by FAO among the largest (and in fastest expansion) shark sub‐products consumer market worldwide.  相似文献
