Plant (vegetable) oil has been evaluated as a substitute for mineral oil–based lubricants because of its natural and environmentally friendly characteristics. Availability of vegetable oil makes it a renewable source of bio-oils. Additionally, vegetable oil–based lubricants have shown potential for reducing hydrocarbon and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when utilized in internal combustion (IC) engines and industrial operations. In this study, sunflower oil was investigated to study its lubricant characteristics under different loads using the four-ball tribometer and the exhaust emissions were tested using a four-stroke, single-cylinder diesel engine. All experimental works conformed to American Society for Testing and Materials standard (ASTM D4172-B). Under low loads, sunflower oil showed adequate tribological characteristics (antifriction and antiwear) compared with petroleum oil samples. The results also demonstrated that the sunflower oil–based lubricant was more effective in reducing the emission levels of carbon monoxide (CO), CO2, and hydrocarbons under different test conditions. Therefore, sunflower oil has the potential to be used as lubricant of mating components.
Implications: An experimental investigation of the characteristics of nonedible sunflower oil tribological behaviors and potential as a renewable source for biofluids alternative to the petroleum oils was carried out. The thermal explosion problem of cumene hydroperoxide exothermic reaction which is used in chemical industries for production of some chemical materials is investigated. The analytical solutions of the problem to determine the margin between ignition and non-ignition systems are presented. The solution offers different analytical expressions which relate between the critical parameters for both steady and unsteady-states in different planes of solutions for different cases. The numerical solutions in different planes offer different trajectories of solution as sub-critical (non-ignition) and supercritical (ignition). Also from the numerical solution the relations between the critical parameters are presented. The critical behaviors from both analytical and numerical solutions are concise and pertained the same results. 相似文献

Assessment of heavy metals contamination in soils surrounding a gold mine: comparison of two digestion methods 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study investigated two digestion methods (USEPA 3051: microwave, HNO3 or Hossner: hot plate, HF–H2SO4–HClO4) for heavy metals analysis in contaminated soil surrounding Mahad AD'Dahab mine, Saudi Arabia. Moreover, contamination metal levels were estimated. The Hossner and USEPA 3051 methods showed, respectively, average total contents of 17.2 and 18.1 mg kg?1 for Cd, 11.6 and 10.6 mg kg?1 for Co, 45.7 and 34.7 mg kg?1 for Cr, 1030 and 1100 mg kg?1 for Cu, 33,300 and 27,400 mg kg?1 for Fe, 963 and 872 mg kg?1 for Mn, 33.2 and 22.8 mg kg?1 for Ni, 791 and 782 mg kg?1for Pb, and 6320 and 2870 mg kg?1 for Zn. A lack of significant differences and a high correlation coefficient (>90%) for Cd, Pb and Cu between the two digestion methods suggest that the total-recoverable method (USEPA 3051) may be equivalent to the total-total digestion method (Hossner) for determining these metals in the studied soil. However, significantly higher concentrations of Cr, Fe, Ni and Zn were found by the Hossner method comapred with the USEPA 3051 method. The soil samples have very or extremely high levels of Zn, Cu, Cd and Pb contamination, indicating very high potential ecological risk. 相似文献

Residues of acenaphthylene, fluorene, anthracene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo(b)fluoranthene and benzo(k)fluoranthene were monitored in rain, soil and groundwater around Ismailia, in northeast Egypt. Residues detected in rain water in 1995 and 1996 were mainly of relatively low molecular weight. Both acenaphthylene and fluorene were detected in rain for the two consecutive years. Top soil has shown a wider spectrum and higher concentrations of (PAHs) than those detected in deep soil, rain and ground water. Only three compounds, acenaphthylene, fluorene and anthracene were detected in samples collected at 50 cm depth. While no traces of PAHs were detected at 1 m depth detectable concentrations of fluorene and anthracene were monitored in groundwater. 相似文献

They represent an immense variety of urban types fulfilling a great range of functions. The Western Harbor (WH) became under stress in the past decades, following successive increase in population. This study deals with local distribution of total lead and its species in the WH sediments. The lead content was high and there was a relationship between its enrichment and oil dispersed from ships. The lowest total lead value was found in the harbor middle far from direct effects of pollution. A five-step sequential extraction scheme was applied to illustrate the contribution shared by each individual fraction in the total lead concentration in the WH sediments. The exchangeable fraction (F1) was very low. The bound to carbonate fraction (F2), the bound to iron-manganese oxide fraction (F3) and the bound to organic matter—sulfide fraction (F4) ranked fourth, second and third in abundance. Oxygen was the main factor controlling the value of F2. F3 gave a direct relationship with total lead. The high levels of F4 occurred at locations of low salinity and enriched with organic matter. The residual fraction (F5) dominated other lead species, reflecting the sediment composition and the amounts of discharged pollutants. 相似文献
