Nonpoint-source pollution of surface water by N is considered a major cause of hypoxia. Because Corn Belt watersheds have been identified as major sources of N in the Mississippi River basin, the fate and transport of N from midwestern agricultural watersheds have received considerable interest. The fate and transport of N in the shallow ground water of these watersheds still needs additional research. Our purpose was to estimate denitrification in the shallow ground water of a tile-drained, Corn Belt watershed with fine-grained soils. Over a 3-yr period, N was monitored in the surface and ground water of an agricultural watershed in central Illinois. A significant amount of N was transported past the tile drains and into shallow ground water. The ground water nitrate was isotopically heavier than tile drain nitrate, which can be explained by denitrification in the subsurface. Denitrifying bacteria were found at depths to 10 m throughout the watershed. Laboratory and push-pull tests showed that a significant fraction of nitrate could be denitrified rapidly. We estimated that the N denitrified in shallow ground water was equivalent to 0.3 to 6.4% of the applied N or 9 to 27% of N exported via surface water. These estimates varied by water year and peaked in a year of normal precipitation after 2 yr of below average precipitation. Three years of monitoring data indicate that shallow ground water in watersheds with fine-grained soils may be a significant N sink compared with N exported via surface water.  相似文献

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become one of the most widespread business topics among the academic community. Various issues like environmental pollution, economic crisis, corruption, poverty are of major importance these days and besides governments and policy makers responsibility it is obvious that corporations are also part of these problems. In Europe the last 15 years, governments, NGOs, small and large enterprises are making an effort to establish in their business CSR strategies so as to become more competitive and innovative in the global market. The research presents the way 8 Greek companies from the metallurgy sector publish CSR activities and which dimensions of CSR are more common among Greek companies. The companies were selected according to a study of ICAP Group about CSR and Leading Employers in Greece. The findings reveal how Greek companies during the economic crisis make their effort to be more active especially on environmental issues, human resources, health and safety and contribution to local communities. The results of their efforts are controversial as far as their CSR strategy concerns.  相似文献

Under the United States Oil Pollution Act of 1990, natural resource trustees are charged with assessing natural resource impacts due to an oil spill and determining the type and amount of natural resource restoration that will compensate the public for the impacts. Habitat equivalency analysis is a technique through which the impacts due to the spill and the benefits of restoration are quantified; both are quantified as habitat resources and associated ecological services. The goal of the analysis is to determine the amount of restoration such that the services lost are offset by services provided by restoration. In this paper, we first describe the habitat equivalency analysis framework. We then present an oil spill case from coastal Louisiana, USA, where the framework was applied to quantify resource impacts and determine the scale of restoration. In the Louisiana case, the trustees assessed impacts for oiled salt marsh and direct mortality to finfish, shellfish, and birds. The restoration project required planting salt-marsh vegetation in dredge material that was deposited on a barrier island. Using the habitat equivalency analysis framework, it was determined that 7.5 ha of the dredge platform should be planted as salt marsh. The planted hectares will benefit another 15.9 ha through vegetative spreading resulting in a total of 23.4 ha that will be enhanced or restored as compensation for the natural resource impacts.  相似文献

The effects of a variety of agricultural land uses were studied using soil nutrients, forest structure, and species assemblages as indicators. We compared soil properties and successional forests between abandoned cacao ( Theobroma cacao ) and abandoned palm ( Bactris gasipaes ) orchards, abandoned pasture, and mature forest. These sites co-occupy an alluvial terrace soil ( Andic Dystropept ) at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. The agricultural sites were originally cleared of most or all forest vegetation approximately 30 years ago and went into succession approximately 7 years ago. Forest structure, species composition, soil nitrogen and phosphorus pools, and nitrogen-mineralization and nitrification rates were measured for each site. The abandoned palm orchard had lower basal area and stem density than other secondary forests of the same age. It also had significantly smaller nitrate (NaOH-extractable) and organic phosphorus pools and significantly lower net rates of nitrogen-mineralization and nitrification. It is evident that preserving tree cover does not necessarily maintain soil fertility. We found species richness and diversity in the secondary forests to be positively correlated with basal area at the time of abandonment.  相似文献

Summary We investigated the calling energetics of Hyla microcephala, a neotropical treefrog with an unusually complex vocal repertoire. Males respond to the calls of other individuals by adding secondary click notes to their calls, thereby increasing the total number of notes given per minute. Rates of oxygen consumption of males calling in metabolic chambers were 0.41–2.80 ml O2/(g·h), corresponding to calling rates of 205–6330 notes/h. Note rate explained 95% of the variance in meta-bolic rate; the effect of variation in body size and temperature was small. Data from playback experiments with males in the field showed that note rate increased as as the number of notes in a stimulus call increased, and this resulted in substantial increases in the cost of calling. Average metabolic rates for males in the field were about 1.7 ml O2/(g·h), for a net cost of calling of about 20 J/h for an average-size male. However, estimated metabolic rates varied by more than 300% and were strongly influenced by the proximity and calling activity of other males in the chorus. Male H. microcephala appear to conserve energy by reducing calling rates when only a few males are active and increasing calling efforts only when vocal competition among males is intense.  相似文献

In this study, an electrochemical system was investigated to enhance abiotic dechlorination of chlorinated solvents in contaminated soil in situ. A potentiostatic electrolysis sand reactor was developed and tested to evaluate tetrachloroethene (PCE) dechlorination in saturated sand. When operated with recirculating nutrient-supplemented water the reactor sustained a low oxidation reduction potential (ORP) at the cathode (<-400 mV standard hydrogen electrode [SHE]), a pH less than 9.4, and electric current >5 mA at room temperature with the cathodic potential controlled at -950 mV SHE. Tetrachloroethene in the electrolysis reactor had a half-life of 6.8 d compared with the control bioreactor without electrolysis, which had a PCE half-life of 16.4 d. Ethane and ethene were the main dechlorination products in the test reactor, while trichloroethene (TCE) accumulated in the nutrient-amended control reactor without electrolysis. An electrolysis reactor operated with water not amended with nutrients showed a PCE half-life of 7.6 d, suggesting that most of dechlorination activity in the reactor was abiotic. Since complete dechlorination can be achieved under moderate pH and temperature, this type of electrolysis technology is attractive as a remedial method for subsurface chloroethene contamination.  相似文献
