Due to concerns about ecotoxicological effects of pharmaceuticals and other micropollutants released from wastewater treatment plants, activated carbon adsorption is one of the few processes to effectively reduce the concentrations of micropollutants in wastewater. Although aimed mainly at apolar compounds, polar compounds are also simultaneously removed to a certain extent, which has rarely been studied before. In this study, adsorption isotherm and batch kinetic data were collected with two powdered activated carbons (PACs) to assess the removal of the polar pharmaceuticals 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) and cytarabine (CytR) from ultrapure water and wastewater treatment plant effluent. At pH?7.8, single-solute adsorption isotherm data for the weak acid 5-Fu and the weak base CytR showed that their adsorption capacities were about 1 order of magnitude lower than those of the less polar endocrine disrupting chemicals bisphenol A (BPA) and 17-α-ethinylestradiol (EE2). To remove 90 % of the adsorbate from a single-solute solution 14, 18, 70, and 87 mg?L?1 of HOK Super is required for EE2, BPA, CytR, and 5-Fu, respectively. Effects of solution pH, ionic strength, temperature, and effluent organic matter (EfOM) on 5-Fu and CytR adsorption were evaluated for one PAC. Among the studied factors, the presence of EfOM had the highest effect, due to a strong competition on 5-Fu and CytR adsorption. Adsorption isotherm and kinetic data and their modeling with a homogeneous surface diffusion model showed that removal percentage in the presence of EfOM was independent on the initial concentration of the ionizable compounds 5-Fu and CytR. These results are similar to neutral organic compounds in the presence of natural organic matter. Overall, results showed that PAC doses sufficient to remove >90 % of apolar adsorbates were able to remove no more than 50 % of the polar adsorbates 5-Fu and CytR and that the contact time is a critical parameter.  相似文献

Sound whole-seed faba beans were treated with (methyl-14C) fenitrothion [O, O-dimethyl-O-(3-methyl-4-nitrophenyl) phosphorothioate] at 5 and 10 mg insecticide/kg seeds, a dose normally used in practice. During the 30 weeks of storage period, the penetration and distribution of insecticide residues were studied. The amount of surface residues, internal residues and bound insecticide residues was estimated. Surface residues were found to decrease with the increase in time of storage, whereas internal residues showed a gradual increase with time apparently not dose dependent. Grain-bound residues increased with time and reached to its maximum (14–18%) after 24 weeks of storage. Chromatographic analysis of the internal extracts revealed the presence of the parent compound together with three main metabolites which were found in both free and conjugated form. Feeding mice for 90 days with a diet mixed with total internal fenitrothion residues in stored faba beans led to a reduction in body weight gain, and an appreciable decrease in cholinesterase activity of 32% for plasma and 15% for red blood cells (RBCS) after two months of experiment. Also, a significant decrease was showed in both total protein and albumin concentration at the end of feeding period (90 days). Liver and kidney function, as well as lipid profile of treated mice significantly increased at the end of feeding period. After a one-month recovery period, all the examined blood parameters returned to about the control values except blood urea and serum triglyceride.  相似文献

A method for determining filtration rates in undisturbed suspension-feeding bivalves is described. Concentrations of particulate matter in the water collected in the inhalant (C i) and exhalant (C e) currents were estimated with an electronic particle counter. The clearance was calculated as , where Fl=flow rate through the tube collecting exhalant water. Only above critical levels of water flow (Fl) were clearances representative of filtration rates. At 10° to 13°C, the filtration rates (F, 1 h-1) within one or two orders of magnitude of dry weight (w, g), in Cardium echinatum L., C. edule L., Mytilus edulis L., Modiolus modiolus (L.) and Arctica islandica (L.) followed the allometric equations: 4.22w 0.62, 11.60w 0.70, 7.45w 0.66, 6.00w 0.75 and 5.55w 0.62, respectively. Five species of bivalves [Spisula subtruncata (da Costa), Hiatella striata (Fleuriau), Cultellus pellucidus (Pennant), Mya arenaria L. and Venerupis pullastra (Montagu)] filtered with the same rates as individuals of Cardium echinatum and A. islandica of equivalent soft weight. In Pecten furtivus and P. opercularis filtration rates were about twice the rates measured in individuals of Mytilus edulis of comparable body weight. The gill area in M. edulis increases with size at the same rate as the filtration rate.  相似文献

This exploratory laboratory study was undertaken to develop and test an in situ bioremediation system intended to point the way toward a possible field application. The proposed method uses a water table management (WTM) system to deliver nutrients or other amendments to subsoil microorganisms for biostimulation and subsequent biodegradation of pollutants in the saturated and unsaturated zones of the soil. The study was carried out on packed soil columns and bioremediation of residual fertilizer nitrate was attempted. Different levels of organic carbon supplement (glucose C) were introduced into these columns via subirrigation in order to supplement the readily available organic carbon levels in the soil. The study was carried out in two experimental setups. The first setup investigated (i) the effect of addition of a high (970 mg L(-1)) and a low (120 mg L(-1)) glucose C level and (ii) the efficacy of using the subirrigation system as a method for nutrient delivery in bioremediation of leached nitrate. This setup was monitored with time, depth, and with reference to the nitrate residue in the soil solution. Leached nitrate was denitrified to less than 10 mg L(-1) nitrate N at both glucose levels. The second setup investigated the effect of a range of low levels of glucose C on nitrate decontamination, soil pH, and total microbial count in order to find out an optimal glucose C level that reduced the most nitrate and maintained the pH homeostasis of soil.  相似文献

Plants of Eichhornia crassipes grown at various levels of cadmium ranging from 0.1 to 100 μg ml−1 accumulated Cd in a concentration and duration dependent manner. At all levels, Cd accumulation by various plant tissues followed the order roots shoot leaves. Approximately 80% of total Cd was accumulated by plant at highest concentration (100 μg ml−1) used in the experiment. Cadmium induced phytotoxicity appears at 25.0 μg ml−1 resulting into reduced levels of chlorophyll, protein and in vivo nitrate reductase activity of the plant. However, a slight induction of these physiological variables was obtained at lowest Cd (0.1 μg ml−1) concentration. In contrast, carotenoid content increased at highest Cd concentration i.e., 100 μg ml−1. Similar effects at low and high levels of Cd was obtained with respect to mitotic index and micronuclei in root meristem of the plant. It could be inferred that Cd toxicity in plant is differential depending upon the low and high concentration of Cd in the medium.  相似文献

The body mass of Aurelia aurita ephyrae was better correlated with the diameter of the central disc than with the distance between opposite rhopaliae or distance between opposite lappet tips. Body dry weight (y, in μg) related to the disc diameter (x, in mm) through the equation y = 22.33 x 1.99. The exponent 1.99 was significantly lower than that for the medusa stage, indicating a tendency to grow in diameter rather than in weight through the ephyra stage. The average ash-free dry weight (AFDW) of ephyrae was 38.0% of the dry weight. The AFDW/diameter relationship was used to convert measured diameters to body AFDW and calculate succession in body mass, daily ration, daily growth rate and gross growth efficiency. Effects of temperature (6, 9.5, 12, 15 and 18 °C) and salinity (17.5, 22, 26, 30.5 and 35 PSU) on these parameters and feeding were studied at saturated prey concentration (222 Artemia nauplii l−1 initial concentration) by daily measurements over 10 d. There was a strong effect of temperature for total ingestion, growth rate, growth efficiency and final body mass of individual ephyrae, whereas the daily ration was not significantly different between the different temperatures. The experimental group kept at the highest temperature (18 °C) diverged the most, and ephyrae at this temperature ingested 2.7 times more and increased in weight 5.4 times more than at 6 °C. The average daily growth rate and gross growth efficiency of these ephyrae were 34.5% and 25.1%, respectively, significantly higher than at 6, 9.5 and 15 °C. Significant effects of salinity were shown for total ingestion, daily ration, daily growth rate and final weight, although only total ingestion and daily ration diverged sufficiently to show effects in a post-hoc test. This test showed that total ingestion was significantly different for all salinities except between 22 and 35 PSU and between 17.5 and 26 PSU. The daily ration for 35 PSU diverged from all other salinities, whereas none of the other salinities showed any significant differences. Thus, provided food in excess A. aurita can double its weight every 2 to 4 d, dependent on temperature and can therefore develop to the medusa stage in short time. Differences in environmental salinity in the range 17.5 to 35 PSU have little or no effect on growth rate and growth efficiency, whereas our results indicate that the full seawater salinity (35 PSU) causes significantly higher ingestion rate compared to lower salinities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), widespread environmental pollutants, have been measured in aerosols and dustfall in Macao. In this paper, we compare concentration distributions and determine the partitioning of PAHs in aerosols and dustfall for different areas, sampling times and sampling heights. The results demonstrate that the concentrations of PAHs in aerosols and dustfall vary at the different sites and heights. The concentrations of PAHs and most of the individual PAHs in aerosols at night were higher than those in the daytime when using the unit of g/g and lower than those when using the unit of g m-3. It is shown that the distribution of individual PAHs in aerosols differs significantly from that in dustfall.  相似文献

Accumulation rates of Cd have been studied in the common mussel Mytilus edulis L. under different laboratory conditions. Semi-static and through-flow experiments were carried out at Cd concentrations of 200 ppb and 50/100 ppb in the water, respectively. A linear uptake of Cd throughout the experimental periods of 36 or 124 d was found in all experiments. The accumulation rate was 3.10 ppm d-1 at 50 ppb in the through-flow water experiment, 4.1 ppm d-1 in starved and 6.6 ppm d-1 in fed mussels in the semi-static experiments with 200 ppb Cd in the water. The Cd-accumulation rate in various fractions of soft parts decreased in the order: body>mantle>muscles. Elution patterns obtained from gel-filtrations showed an increasing amount of Cd-binding proteins (metallothioneins) when the body burden of Cd increased. The Cd content in the body fraction of mussels transferred to clean water for 42 d after first being exposed to Cd during 124 d decreased from 564 ppm on a dry weight basis to 417 ppm while the fraction of Cd bound to metallothioneins rose from 22 to 78% during the same period.  相似文献

Mixed contamination by organic and inorganic compounds in soil is a serious problem for remediation. Most laboratory studies and field-scale trials focused on individual contaminant in the past. For concurrent bioremediation by biodegradation and bioleaching processes, we tested metal-reducing microorganism, Geobacter metallireducens. In order to prove the feasibility of the coupled process, multiple-contaminated soil was prepared. Mineralogical analyses have shown the existence of labile forms of As(V) as amorphous and/or weakly sorbed phases in the secondary Fe oxides. In the biotic experiment using G. metallireducens, biodegradation of toluene and bioleaching of As by bacteria were observed simultaneously. Bacteria accelerated the degradation rate of toluene with reductive dissolution of Fe and co-dissolution of As. Although there have been many studies showing each individual process, we have shown here that the idea of concurrent microbial reaction is feasible. However, for the practical use as a remediation technology, more details and multilateral evaluations are required in future studies.  相似文献
