Pollution and Capital Markets in Developing Countries 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

It is said that firms in developing countries do not have incentives to invest in pollution control because of weak implementation of environmental regulations. This argument assumes that the regulator is the only agent that can create incentives for pollution control, and ignores that capital markets, if properly informed, may provide the appropriate financial and reputational incentives. We show that capital markets in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, and the Philippines do react to announcements of environmental events, such as those of superior environmental performance or citizens' complaints. A policy implication is that environmental regulators in developing countries may explicitly harness those market forces by introducing structured programs of information release pertaining to firms' environmental performance: public disclosure mechanisms in developing countries may be a useful model to consider given limited government enforcement resources. 相似文献

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed an interconnected and tightly coupled globalized world in rapid change. This article sets the scientific stage for understanding and responding to such change for global sustainability and resilient societies. We provide a systemic overview of the current situation where people and nature are dynamically intertwined and embedded in the biosphere, placing shocks and extreme events as part of this dynamic; humanity has become the major force in shaping the future of the Earth system as a whole; and the scale and pace of the human dimension have caused climate change, rapid loss of biodiversity, growing inequalities, and loss of resilience to deal with uncertainty and surprise. Taken together, human actions are challenging the biosphere foundation for a prosperous development of civilizations. The Anthropocene reality—of rising system-wide turbulence—calls for transformative change towards sustainable futures. Emerging technologies, social innovations, broader shifts in cultural repertoires, as well as a diverse portfolio of active stewardship of human actions in support of a resilient biosphere are highlighted as essential parts of such transformations. 相似文献

Immobilization of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) ions on kaolinite and montmorillonite surfaces from aqueous medium 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The present study investigates the immobilization of Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) on clays (kaolinite and montmorillonite) in aqueous medium through the process of adsorption under a set of variables (concentration of metal ion, amount of clay, pH, time and temperature of interaction). Increasing pH favours the removal of metal ions till they are precipitated as the insoluble hydroxides. The uptake is rapid with maximum adsorption being observed within 180 min for Pb(II) and Ni(II) and 240 min for Cd(II). A number of available models like the Lagergren pseudo first-order kinetics, second-order kinetics, Elovich equation, liquid film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion are utilized to evaluate the kinetics and the mechanism of the immobilization interactions. Two isotherm equations due to Langmuir and Freundlich showed good fits with the experimental data. Kaolinite and montmorillonite have considerable Langmuir monolayer capacity with respect to Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II), the values being in the range of 6.8-11.5mg/g (kaolinite) and 21.1-31.1mg/g (montmorillonite). The Freundlich adsorption capacity follows a similar order. The thermodynamics of the immobilization process indicates the same to be exothermic with Pb(II) and Ni(II), but endothermic with Cd(II). The interactions with Pb(II) and Ni(II) are accompanied by decrease in entropy and Gibbs energy while the endothermic immobilization of Cd(II) is supported by an increase in entropy and an appreciable decrease in Gibbs energy. The results have established good potentiality for kaolinite and montmorillonite to remove heavy metals like Pb(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II) from aqueous medium through adsorption-mediated immobilization. 相似文献

The dynamics of arsenic in four paddy fields in the Bengal delta 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Irrigation with arsenic contaminated groundwater in the Bengal Delta may lead to As accumulation in the soil and rice grain. The dynamics of As concentration and speciation in paddy fields during dry season (boro) rice cultivation were investigated at 4 sites in Bangladesh and West Bengal, India. Three sites which were irrigated with high As groundwater had elevated As concentrations in the soils, showing a significant gradient from the irrigation inlet across the field. Arsenic concentration and speciation in soil pore water varied temporally and spatially; higher As concentrations were associated with an increasing percentage of arsenite, indicating a reductive mobilization. Concentrations of As in rice grain varied by 2-7 fold within individual fields and were poorly related with the soil As concentration. A field site employing alternating flooded-dry irrigation produced the lowest range of grain As concentration, suggesting a lower soil As availability caused by periodic aerobic conditions. 相似文献

In this lecture, I demonstrate how very different macroeconomic history begins to look if Nature is included as a capital
asset in production activities. The tentative conclusions I draw from the evidence are: (1) high population growth in the
world’s poorest regions (South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa) has been an obstacle to the achievement of sustainable economic
development there; relatedly, (2) when population growth is taken into account, the accumulation of manufactured capital,
knowledge, and human capital (health and education) has not compensated for the degradation of natural capital in South Asia
and sub-Saharan Africa and, in all probability, even in the UK and the US; (3) China is possibly an exception to (1) and (2).
This article is based on the Keynote Lecture delivered at the international symposium on “Sustainability in an Unequal World”,
held in Tokyo on November 24, 2006. The exposition relies on my book, Economics: A Very Short Introduction, Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2007.

Silver nanoparticle antimicrobial activity explained by membrane rupture and reactive oxygen generation 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Silver nanoparticles are widely used as antimicrobial compounds based on empirical observations. However, there is few knowledge on the mechanism ruling the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of Ag nanoparticles. Here, we investigated this mechanism. Nano-Ag was synthesised by thermal co-reduction. Mutagenicity analysis was performed using Salmonella typhimurium histidine auxotrophic strains TA 98 and TA 100 at nano-silver concentrations of 100 to 500 µg per plate. Dose-dependent analysis for reactive oxygen species generation has been performed using 2,7-dichlorofluorescein diacetate dye. Membrane integrity has been analyzed at 260 nm, before and after treatment. We also used scanning electron microscopy, membrane permeabilization test, and superoxide formation determinations. Results show that the average particle size of Ag nanoparticle is 60.4 ± 3.8 nm. The minimum inhibitory concentration of Ag nanoparticles for E.coli is 30 µg/mL; the minimum bactericidal concentration is 40 µg/mL. Ames mutagenicity tests showed negative results, which may be explained by the antimicrobial activity of nano-silver. Bacterial inner wall were indeed ruptured, and cytoplasmic content was released after 5 min of treatment in a dose-dependent manner. We thus propose that reactive oxygen generation and alteration of membrane integrity and permeability are the major mechanism of antimicrobial activity of nano-silver. 相似文献

This paper analyses the relationship between social rates of discount to be used in benefit-cost analysis of investment projects and optimal intertemporal plans of capital accumulation and resource depletion. The discussion is conducted in the context of models that incorporate exhaustible natural resources. It is argued that discount rates are a derived concept and that they ought to be arrived at from a consideration of our sense of intergenerational justice and optimal programmes arrived at from intergenerational welfare criteria. 相似文献
