Introduction: Distracted driving (talking and/or texting) is a growing public safety problem, with increasing incidence among adult drivers. The aim of this study was to identify the incidence of distracted driving (DD) among health care providers and to create awareness against DD. We hypothesized that distracted driving is prevalent among health care providers and a preventive campaign against distracted driving would effectively decrease distracted driving among health care providers.

Methods: We performed a 4-phase prospective interventional study of all health care providers at our level 1 trauma center. Phase 1: one week of pre-intervention observation; phase 2: one week of intervention; phase 3: one week of postintervention observation; and phase 4: one week of 6 months of postintervention observation. Observations were performed outside employee parking garage at the following time intervals: 6:30–8:30 a.m., 4:40–5:30 p.m., and 6:30–7:30 p.m. Intervention included an e-mail survey, pamphlets and banners in the hospital cafeteria, and a postintervention survey. Hospital employees were identified with badges and scrubs, employees exiting through employee gate, and parking pass on the car. Outcome measure was incidence of DD pre, post, and 6 months postintervention.

Results: A total of 15,416 observations (pre: 6,639, post: 4,220, 6 months post: 4,557) and 520 survey responses were collected. The incident of DD was 11.8% among health care providers. There was a significant reduction in DD in each time interval of observation between pre- and postintervention. On subanalysis, there was a significant decrease in talking (P = .0001) and texting (P = .01) while driving postintervention compared to pre-intervention. In the survey, 35.5% of respondents admitted to DD and 4.5% respondents were involved in an accident due to DD. We found that 77% respondents felt more informed after the survey and 91% respondents supported a state legislation against DD. The reduction in the incidence of DD postintervention was sustained even at 6-month follow-up.

Conclusion: There was a 32% reduction in the incidence of distracted driving postintervention, which remained low even at 6-month follow-up. Implementation of an effective injury prevention campaign could reduce the incidence of distracted driving nationally.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the physical and chemical properties of different oil palm wastes, viz. empty fruit bunch (EFB), oil palm frond (OPF) and oil palm trunk (OPT). A study (84 days duration) was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of an exotic earthworm species (epigeic-African Nightcrawler (Eudrilus euginae)) for the decomposition of different types of oil palm wastes (EFB, OPT and OPF) into valuable vermicompost. The decrease in earthworm’s biomass gain for EFB, OPT and OPF may be due to exhaustion of worm feed in vermicomposters. The percentage of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium in vermicompost was found to increase while pH and total organic carbon declined as a function of the vermicomposting period. The vermicompost obtained showed an increase in heavy metal content for all the reactors, but levels were still in the range of nutrient in the vermicompost. The data reveal that vermicomposting (using African Nightcrawler) is a suitable technology for the decomposition of oil palm wastes, especially EFB into value-added material.  相似文献

Brassinosteroids have been extensively used to overcome various abiotic stresses. But its role in combined stress of salt and excess copper remains unexplored. Seeds of two cultivars (Rocket and Jumbo) of Cucumis sativus were grown in sand amended with copper (100 mg?kg?1), and developed seedlings were exposed to salt stress in the form of NaCl (150 mM) at the 30-day stage of growth for 3 days. These seedlings were subsequently sprayed with 0 or 0.01 μM of 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) at the 35-day stage. The plants exposed to NaCl and Cu in combination exhibited a significant decline in fresh and dry mass of plant, chlorophyll content, activities of carbonic anhydrase, net photosynthetic rate and maximum quantum yield of the PSII primary photochemistry followed by NaCl and Cu stress alone, more severely in Jumbo than in Rocket. However, the follow-up treatment with EBL to the stressed and nonstressed plant improved growth, chlorophyll content, carbonic anhydrase activity and photosynthetic efficiency, and further enhanced the activity of various antioxidant enzymes viz. catalase, peroxidase and superoxide dismutase and content of proline at the 40-day stage of growth, and the response of the hormone was more effective in Rocket than in Jumbo. The elevated level of antioxidant enzymes as well as proline could have conferred tolerance to the NaCl- and/or Cu-stressed plants resulting in improved growth, water relations and photosynthetic attributes. Furthermore, antioxidant enzyme activity and proline content were more enhanced in Rocket than in Jumbo cultivar.  相似文献

Solid and soft forms of waste polystyrene have been treated with coumarone–indene resin and benzene to produce a new adhesive. The adhesive is prepared from various compositions of polystyrene (13–38 wt%), coumarone-indene resin (5–7%) and benzene (57–80%). Viscosity, peel strength and tensile shear strength of the adhesive is determined by a HAAKE Rotary Viscometer, Lloyd Adhesion Tester and Instron machine, respectively. Rolling ball technique was used to measure the tackiness of the adhesive. Results show that the adhesion property increases with increase in polystyrene composition and coating thickness. This observation is attributed to the increasing wettability of adhesive on the substrate.  相似文献

The presence of water vapor in a sample of air reduces the concentration of a trace gas measured from the sample. We present a methodology to correct for this effect for those cases when the concentration of the trace gas has already been measured from a wet sample. The conversion or correction factor that takes the wet mole fraction to a dry mole fraction is determined by the mixing ratio of water vapor inside the sampling canister. For those samples where the water vapor is saturated inside the canister, the water vapor mixing ratio is largely determined by laboratory conditions; for the unsaturated samples, the mixing ratio is determined by station conditions. If the meteorology at the sampling station is known, the equations presented here can be used directly to calculate the appropriate correction factor. For convenience, we use climatological data to derive average monthly correction factors for seven common global sampling sites: Barrow, AK, US (71 degrees N, 157degrees W); Cape Meares, OR, US (45 degrees N, 124 degrees W); Mauna Loa, HI, US (19 degrees N, 155 degrees W); Ragged Point, Barbados (13 degrees N, 59 degrees W); American Samoa (14 degrees S, 171 degrees W); Cape Grim, Tasmania, Australia (41 degrees S, 145 degrees E); South Pole (90 degrees S). These factors adjust wet mole fractions upwards within a range of 0.002% for the South Pole to over 0.8% for saturated sites. We apply the correction factors to wet nitrous oxide (N2O) mole fractions. The corrected data are more consistent with our understanding of N2O sources.  相似文献

A global time series of atmospheric methylchloride (CH3Cl) concentrations is reported showing the variability with latitude and season. Springtime concentrations of CH3Cl at 45°N latitude are 7.5%±3.5% higher than during other seasons. Lowest concentrations were generally observed during fall. CH3Cl was found to be more abundant by about 6% (±5% NH, ±3% SH) in the tropical regions of both hemispheres. No significant difference in the burdens of CH3Cl was observed between the two hemispheres. Based on these data the ratio of the average hydroxyl radical (HO) concentration over the southern hemisphere to that over the northern hemisphere was estimated to be 1.3 or less.  相似文献

A chemistry model of the global troposphere is presented which focuses on the hydroxyl radical, OH. Global distributions of OH are calculated based on known chemical reaction pathways, experimentally measured values of precursor species O3, H2O, NOx (defined as NO+NO2), CO, CH4, and actinic flux (which includes the effects of cloud cover and O3 column absorption). Model grid resolution is 1 km in altitude by 10 degrees latitude, and zonally divided into land or ocean. Species are calculated as seasonal averages. Global annual mean OH in the troposphere (up to 14 km altitude) is calculated to be 9.2 x 10(5) molcm(-3) with averages of 9.8 x 10(5) in the northern hemisphere, and 8.5 x 10(5) in the southern hemisphere. Global CO and CH(4) oxidation rates by OH are calculated to be 1840 Tgyear(-1) and 580 Tgyear(-1), respectively. OH is found to be most sensitive to O3 and H2O concentrations, as well as to the photolysis rate of O3 to O1D. Sensitivity of CO and CH4 oxidation rates to cloud presence shows an inverse relationship to cloud amount and optical depth. Model results are shown to be consistent with results from two other published models.  相似文献

Food contamination may contribute to serious human health problems. In this work, the effect of γ-irradiation 0, 5, 10, and 15 kGy doses on the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from wheat kernels was investigated. Additionally, variations in the contents of 16 congeners on bacterial load and other chemical parameters were studied. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentrations were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography followed by fluorescence detection. The effects of γ-irradiation on the concentrations varied for each congener, with the highest irradiation dose being the most effective. Benzo[a]pyrene was reduced by ~50%, and the total concentration of all congeners decreased dramatically from 154 to 21 µg.kg?1 upon 15 kGy irradiation at a dose rate of 8.49 kGy h?1. The total bacterial load was reduced from 2.4 to < 1 log10 cfu g?1, while wheat chemical properties were not affected.  相似文献
