The effect of repeated daily freezing on photosynthesis, growth and phenotypic acclimation to freezing was studied in the red algaeChondrus crispus Stackhouse andMastocarpus stellatus (Stackhouse in With.) Guiry. Algae used for experiments were collected from Chamberlain, Maine, between March and August 1987, and field observations and experiments were carried out at Chamberlain and Kresge Point, Maine between March 1987 and March 1989. After ca 30 d of daily freezing for 3 h at –5°C photosynthesis ofC. crispus was reduced to 55% of control values. Growth rates ofC. crispus were also reduced in fronds frozen daily compared to unfrozen controls, and eventually fronds became bleached and fragmented resulting in biomass losses. Fronds ofC. crispus, frozen daily, had higher photosynthetic rates following freezing events than unfrozen controls indicating that this species can acclimate to freezing conditions. Acclimation to freezing involves the light-harvesting reactions of photosynthesis. In contrast, photosynthesis and growth inM. stellatus were unaffected by repeated daily freezing for 3 h at –5°C for 36 d. No differences in photosynthesis following freezing were observed between frozen and control fronds suggesting thatM. stellatus does not phenotypically acclimate to freezing. The greater freezing tolerance ofM. stellatus relative toC. crispus results, in part, from genetic adaptations associated with plasma membranes and the light-harvesting reactions of photosynthesis. 相似文献

Visible injury caused by ozone is recorded every year in native plant species growing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (USA). One of the most sensitive species, cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata L.), shows great variation in symptoms between and within populations but the causes of this variation and its ecological significance are currently unknown. This paper presents data relating to genetic variation, ozone concentrations, stomatal conductance and light (PAR) within populations. The data show that populations differ in genetic diversity, one consisting of only three genets while another was very diverse. In the former population, symptoms varied greatly within a single genet, pointing to a large micro-environmental influence. Measurements of ozone, stomatal conductance and PAR within plant canopies suggest that variation in symptom expression is unlikely to be due to differences in ozone flux and more likely to be due to variation in light. The variation in visible symptoms raises the question of what bioindicators actually indicate, and it suggests that symptoms should be interpreted with great caution until the underlying causes of that variation are fully understood. 相似文献

The regulation of the emissions of 'traditional' primary air pollutants (fluorides, sulfur dioxide) has changed the pattern of exposure of ecological systems, with greatly reduced exposure close to sources, but with a smaller effect in some remote areas. Measurements show that recovery is occurring at some sites, in fresh water chemistry (reduced acidity) and in sensitive biota (sustainable fish populations). However, the pattern of change in exposure has not always been simply related to emission reductions. An understanding of responses to recent changes will improve our predictions of the response to future emission changes, both locally and globally. As exposure to 'traditional' pollutants is reduced, the potential for other pollutants to have effects becomes more evident. In the aqueous phase, we need to understand the role of soluble and suspended organics, but this also means explicit recognition of the possibility of phase exchange, and the role of photolytic reactions on plant, soil, and water surfaces. Do highly reactive free radicals in the atmosphere, formed by the action of sunlight on volatile organic compounds, have direct effects on plants? Organic compounds and heavy metals may be bioactive as gases and particles, but for many potentially toxic compounds, the experimental evidence for biotic response is very limited. To evaluate the potential effects of pollutants, we need to understand the pathways by which airborne pollutants enter and react within ecosystems. For vegetation, we have to consider bidirectional fluxes, and distinguish among uptake through stomata, through leaf surfaces, or through roots. There are several challenges for the future. (1) Can we devise experiments that permit exposure of vegetation to gases, particles, and/or aqueous pollutants at 'realistic' concentrations? (2) Can we include the potential interactions with photolytically derived free radicals, and the dynamics of exchange? (3) How do we allow for responses to pollutant mixtures, or the simultaneous exposure to pollutants in gas, particle, and aqueous phases? The recognition of the importance of the dynamic exchange of pollutants between phases will be the key to the development of effective experimental approaches to evaluating cause-effect relationships between pollutant mixtures and ecosystem responses. 相似文献

Stochastic modelling was used to investigate the influence of airborne fluorides (in the case of grass fluoride) and meteorological factors on both grass and airborne fluoride levels, taking into consideration lagged dependence. Using rigorous grass sampling methods, there were indications of a negative relationship between volume of rainfall and grass fluoride concentrations, but no apparent relationship between the time which the leaf was visibly wet and grass fluoride levels. No evidence was found that rainfall washed airborne fluoride from the atmosphere or that wind variables influenced grass fluoride. For one particular experimental site, a multivariate stochastic model, which accounts for 81% of the total variation of the grass fluoride series, is developed. 相似文献

Audience segmentation could help improve the effectiveness of conservation interventions. Marketers use audience segmentation to define the target audience of a campaign. The technique involves subdividing a general population into groups that share similar profiles, such as sociodemographic or behavioral characteristics. Interventions are then designed to target the group or groups of interest. We explored the potential of audience segmentation for use in defining conservation target groups with a case study of hunters in Liberia. Using 2 data sets describing households (n = 476) and hunters (n = 205), we applied a clustering method in which infinite binomial mixture models group hunters and households according to livelihood and behavior variables and a simple method to define target groups based on hunting impact (hunting households and high-impact hunters). Clusters of hunters and households differed in their experiences with confiscation of catch at roadblocks and participation in livelihood-support programs, indicating that these interventions operate unevenly across subsets of the population. By contrast, the simple method masked these insights because profiles of hunting households and high-impact hunters were similar to those of the general population. Clustering results could be used to guide the development of livelihood and regulatory interventions. For example, a commonly promoted agricultural activity, cocoa farming, was practiced by only 2% (out of 87) of the largest hunter cluster of nonlocal gun hunters but was prevalent among local trappers, suggesting that assistance aimed at cocoa farmers is less appropriate for the former group. Cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata L.), crown-beard (Verbesina occidentalis Walt.), and tall milkweed (Asclepias exaltata L.) are wildflower species native to Great Smoky Mountains National Park (U.S.A.). Natural populations of each species were analyzed for leaf ascorbic acid (AA) and dehydroascorbic acid (DHA) to assess the role of ascorbate in protecting the plants from ozone stress. Tall milkweed contained greater quantities of AA (7-10 micromol g(-1) fresh weight) than crown-beard (2-4 micromol g(-1) fresh weight) or cutleaf coneflower (0.5-2 micromol g(-1) fresh weight). DHA was elevated in crown-beard and cutleaf coneflower relative to tall milkweed suggesting a diminished capacity for converting DHA into AA. Tall milkweed accumulated AA in the leaf apoplast (30-100 nmol g(-1) fresh weight) with individuals expressing ozone foliar injury symptoms late in the season having less apoplast AA. In contrast, AA was not present in the leaf apoplast of either crown-beard or cutleaf coneflower. Unidentified antioxidant compounds were present in the leaf apoplast of all three species. Overall, distinct differences in antioxidant metabolism were found in the wildflower species that corresponded with differences in ozone sensitivity. 相似文献

Workable pollution abatement policies and effective legislation must be based on sound science. However, despite many years of research, there are still uncertainties about the effects of atmospheric nitrogen compounds on crops and other vegetation. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of the main compounds, focussing on the concentrations and combinations of pollutants that occur in rural areas. The sources, concentrations and effects of oxidised, reduced and organic nitrogen compounds are considered in turn, then the effects of deposited nitrogen on ecosystems are discussed. Research priorities on the effects of deposited nitrogen in Europe and the USA are compared. Finally, the review leads to a list of issues for discussion and recommendations for research. 相似文献

Experiments to assess the impact of dietary fluoride on larvae of Pieris brassicae were designed to substantiate field observations that at polluted sites little fluoride is absorbed by insect larvae and that most of the body load is caused by surface contamination. Treatment with fluoride as HF or AlF3 had no effect on pupal weight of Pieris and we conclude that fluoride, at concentrations likely to be found on vegetation at polluted sites, is unlikely to have a direct impact on the growth of chewing herbivores. Fluoride in the gut formed the biggest component of the total body load. A significant amount of fluoride was detected in exuviae, but resulted from surface contamination. When larvae from polluted food were transferred to untreated food it took several days for the fluoride content of the faeces to return to background levels. 相似文献
