In-cloud oxidation of SO2 byH2O2 was investigated using a tracertechnique based on SO2– 4/Se ratios atWhiteface Mountain, New York during summer months from1990 to 1998. Cloud water samples collected at themountain's summit (1.5 km above mean sea level) andaerosols at a below cloud site (Lodge) located at 0.6km amsl and in cloud interstitial air at the summitwere analyzed for SO2– 4 and selectedtrace elements. Gaseous SO2 andH2O2were measured in realtime. Cloud water pH wasgenerally below 5.0 with a mean value of 3.6. Theresults show that significant in cloud oxidation occursin clouds during summer months varying from belowdetection to 62% with on average approximately 24% ofthe cloud water SO2– 4 produced from in-situ SO2 oxidation. During summer the clouds wereoxidant limited for approximately one third of thetime.  相似文献

White lupin is an annual crop that has been used for phytostabilization of acidified multicontaminated (heavy metals and As) soils from the Aznalcóllar spill-affected area, Southern Spain. One of the most important factors for successful phytostabilization is monitoring the pollutant bioavailability in the soil. The aim of this work was to determine the best-suited method for assessing the bioavailability of heavy metals together with As in the Aznalcóllar spill-affected area, by means of a systematic comparison between different extraction methods (Ammonium bicarbonate-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (AB-DTPA), CaCl2, NaNO3, BCR, (NH4)2SO4 and rhizo). Both AB-DTPA and the first step of the BCR method were found to be unsuitable for assessing the bioavailability of heavy metals and As to plants growing in acidic soils. However, CaCl2-extractable As, Cu, and Zn and NaNO3-extractable As and Zn were well correlated with their concentrations in plant organs. Rhizo and (NH4)2SO4, with the highest determination coefficients, were the most recommended simple extraction methods to assess the bioavailability of As, Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in acidified multicontaminated soils using white lupin as an excluder model plant.  相似文献

Free and associated bitumens were isolated by sequential extraction from Vlasina lake peat (SE Serbia) and were investigated in order to differentiate between oil pollution and natural bitumens. Four peat samples were collected at different depths, on a peat island. Gas chromatographic (GC) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis revealed the presence of three markedly different bitumen fractions. Here we show that the free bitumens are representing the native peat bitumens. The two associated bitumens are mainly the products of bacterial rework of organic substance, which were then trapped by two differing mechanisms. The combined effects of ocean warming and acidification were compared in larvae from two populations of the cold-eurythermal spider crab Hyas araneus, from one of its southernmost populations (around Helgoland, southern North Sea, 54°N, habitat temperature 3–18°C; collection: January 2008, hatch: January–February 2008) and from one of its northernmost populations (Svalbard, North Atlantic, 79°N, habitat temperature 0–6°C; collection: July 2008, hatch: February–April 2009). Larvae were exposed to temperatures of 3, 9 and 15°C combined with present-day normocapnic (380 ppm CO2) and projected future CO2 concentrations (710 and 3,000 ppm CO2). Calcium content of whole larvae was measured in freshly hatched Zoea I and after 3, 7 and 14 days during the Megalopa stage. Significant differences between Helgoland and Svalbard Megalopae were observed at all investigated temperatures and CO2 conditions. Under 380 ppm CO2, the calcium content increased with rising temperature and age of the larvae. At 3 and 9°C, Helgoland Megalopae accumulated more calcium than Svalbard Megalopae. Elevated CO2 levels, especially 3,000 ppm, caused a reduction in larval calcium contents at 3 and 9°C in both populations. This effect set in early, at 710 ppm CO2 only in Svalbard Megalopae at 9°C. Furthermore, at 3 and 9°C Megalopae from Helgoland replenished their calcium content to normocapnic levels and more rapidly than Svalbard Megalopae. However, Svalbard Megalopae displayed higher calcium contents under 3,000 ppm CO2 at 15°C. The findings of a lower capacity for calcium incorporation in crab larvae living at the cold end of their distribution range suggests that they might be more sensitive to ocean acidification than those in temperate regions.  相似文献

The type of interaction of selenium and mercury, and selenium and copper on the cell growth of the planktonic alga Dunaliella minuta Lerche has been studied. The results for the various selenium/mercury and selenium/copper ratios showed that: (a) although mercury and selenium inhibited the growth of D. minuta when added to its cultures separately at levels greater than their respective threshold concentrations, they had antagonistic effects towards each other when added simulataneously at the beginning of growth; prior exposure of the culture to either metal for 2 d did not alter this antagonistic action; (b) similar antagonism was observed in combinations of selenium and copper for cultures with and without prior exposure to either metal. The reasons for the Se/Hg and Se/Cu antagonism are unknown; several hypotheses concerning possible detoxification mechanisms are proposed.  相似文献

An investigation was made on the adsorption and kinetics of photodegradation of potassium hydrogenphthalate in an aqueous suspension of TiO(2). Two models, Langmuir and Freundlich, were used to describe the adsorption process and the model proposed by Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) was employed to describe the kinetics of the photodecomposition reactions of hydrogenphthalate. The results of the adsorptions were fitted to the models proposed by Langmuir and Freundlich. Adsorption was found to be a function of the temperature, with adsorption capacity increasing from 2.4 to 4.5 mg/g when the temperature rose from 20 to 30 degrees C. The kinetic model indicates that the rate constant, k, of the first order reaction, is high in the 10.0 to 100 mg/l interval, which is coherent with the low value of the adsorption constant, K. The results fitted to the L-H model led to an equation that, within the range of concentrations studied here, theoretically allows one to evaluate the photodegradation rate.  相似文献

Kinetic analyses were made of the stable sodium and radioactive sodium (22Na) in some tissues of the crab Carcinus mediterraneus CSRN. Fast 22Na outflux constant is increased in gills, hepatopancreas, hemolymph, digestive tract and muscles. In the reproductive organs the values of the sodium outflux constant are lower. The values of the fast outflux rates (t=20°C) of sodium amount, in the whole animal, to 22.5 M Na/g/h, in the hemolymph, to 69.3 M Na/g/h; the slow outflux rates have much lower values (0.02 to 0.13 M Na/g/h). Moulting crabs show a rate of sodium outflux 6 times greater than that of intermoulting individuals.  相似文献

Excessive nutrient loading (considering nitrogen and phosphorus) is a major ongoing threat to water quality and here we review the impact of nutrient discharges from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to United States (U.S.) freshwater systems. While urban and agricultural land uses are significant nonpoint nutrient contributors, effluent from point sources such as WWTPs can overwhelm receiving waters, effectively dominating hydrological characteristics and regulating instream nutrient processes. Population growth, increased wastewater volumes, and sustainability of critical water resources have all been key factors influencing the extent of wastewater treatment. Reducing nutrient concentrations in wastewater is an important aspect of water quality management because excessive nutrient concentrations often prevent water bodies from meeting designated uses. WWTPs employ numerous physical, chemical, and biological methods to improve effluent water quality but nutrient removal requires advanced treatment and infrastructure that may be economically prohibitive. Therefore, effluent nutrient concentrations vary depending on the particular processes used to treat influent wastewater. Increasingly stringent regulations regarding nutrient concentrations in discharged effluent, along with greater freshwater demand in populous areas, have led to the development of extensive water recycling programs within many U.S. regions. Reuse programs provide an opportunity to reduce or eliminate direct nutrient discharges to receiving waters while allowing for the beneficial use of reclaimed water. However, nutrients in reclaimed water can still be a concern for reuse applications, such as agricultural and landscape irrigation.  相似文献
