On the importance of knowing the affective meaning of job demands

Theorizing about the effects of job demands on mental health, job satisfaction and performance can be enhanced by allowing for a more complicated view of job demands. This paper describes an empirical attempt aimed at investigating facets of job demands. It hypothesizes that (1) many individuals will agree that job demands of certain kinds and strengths, will be associated with either satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, (2) that there will be no general agreement for some types of demands. Correlational analysis was performed on two independent sets of data to test the hypotheses, which were both supported. These results raised questions about the status of the concept of demands itself and a recommendation is made that it be replaced by the more neutral term ‘job demands milieu’ which can be applied to other aspects of the job environment such as task-based milieu, role-based milieu, or physical environmental milieu.     

Atmospheric nitrogen compounds-issues related to agricultural systems

Workable pollution abatement policies and effective legislation must be based on sound science. However, despite many years of research, there are still uncertainties about the effects of atmospheric nitrogen compounds on crops and other vegetation. This paper reviews the current state of knowledge of the main compounds, focussing on the concentrations and combinations of pollutants that occur in rural areas. The sources, concentrations and effects of oxidised, reduced and organic nitrogen compounds are considered in turn, then the effects of deposited nitrogen on ecosystems are discussed. Research priorities on the effects of deposited nitrogen in Europe and the USA are compared. Finally, the review leads to a list of issues for discussion and recommendations for research.     

The normal fetus of an acardiac twin pregnancy: Perinatal management based on echocardiographic and sonographic evaluation

Experience with three prenatally diagnosed pregnancies complicated by an acardiac twin reveals that ultrasonography and echocardiography are helpful in detecting early signs of in-utero congestive heart failure in the normal twin. The use of Doppler blood flow analysis to determine direction of blood flow, post-mortem placental and fetal angiography, and umbilical cord blood gas determination provided proof that retrograde arterial perfusion occurs in the acardiac fetus. In a fourth pregnancy, an experimental approach to occlude the acardiac twin's umbilical cord was attempted, but was unsuccessful.
