The photosynthetic responses of the south Pacific kelp Lessonia nigrescens of the coast of Valdivia, Chile (40°S), were investigated by exposing its different thallus parts, fronds, stipes and holdfasts, to UV radiation in the laboratory. Biologically effective doses (BEDphotoinhibition300) between 400 and 800 kJ m−2 were required for a 40% inhibition in photosynthesis under UVA+UVB radiation. At BEDphotoinhibition300 close to 250 kJ m−2 (in treatments without UVB), the inhibition of photosynthesis did not exceed 20%. These UV doses were in the range of current daily doses measured in Valdivia on cloudless summer days. In general, exposure to UVB for periods longer than 12 h reduced photosynthesis, measured as maximal quantum yield (F v/F m) and electron transport. The fronds were the most UV-sensitive section of this alga, coinciding with the highest pigments contents and carbon fixation. Evidence of a photodamage was also seen. After a 48 h exposure to PAR+UVA+UVB, a decrease of F v/F m in the fronds was close to 41%, while in the stipes and holdfasts it was 12 and 18%, respectively. Although the thalli from the different size classes showed marked differences in their morphology and morphometry, no obvious differences in the UV tolerance of the fronds were detected. The results indicated that the UV-related responses are integrated in the suite of morpho-functional adaptations of the alga. Although the fronds are spatially more exposed to solar radiation than basal structures (stipes and holdfast), due their high turnover rate they may compensate better detrimental effects of UV. In contrast, stipes and the holdfast are key support structures characterized by low replacement rates and designed to confer hydrodynamic resistance to drag forces.  相似文献

In this paper, we show that the commonly observed decline in primary (natural resource using) sector output and employment shares, often termed structural change, can be explained as an endogenous response to the presence of nature's constraint. Structural change takes place even if consumer preferences are homothetic, and technological progress does not discriminate against the primary sector. Under certain conditions, structural change allows an open economy to grow with natural resource sustainability. Sustained and environmentally sustainable economic growth is possible even if the natural resource is exploited under open access. Well-defined property rights are neither necessary, nor sufficient for sustainable growth. We show that there is no unique relationship between natural resource endowment and the rate of economic growth over the long run. Resource-rich economies may grow faster or slower than resource-poor ones.  相似文献

Egg data from ichthyoplankton monitoring sites in the western English Channel (1988–2003) and northern Spain (1990–2000) and macroscopic maturity data from biological samples of purse seine landings in western and southern Iberia (1980–2004) are used to describe the spawning seasonality of sardine (Sardina pilchardus) in European waters of the northeast Atlantic using generalised additive models. The fitted models reveal a double peak in spawning activity during early summer and autumn in the western Channel, a wider spring peak off northern Spain and a broad winter season in the western and southern Iberian Peninsula. At all sites, a high probability of spawning activity was observed over at least 3 months of the year, with the duration of the season increasing with both decreasing latitude and increasing fish size. Off western and southern Iberia there are indications that the spawning season has been of longer duration in recent years for all size classes (reaching in some cases 8 months of the year for large fish). These patterns are in general agreement with existing literature and theoretical expectations of sardine spawning being driven locally by the seasonal cycle of water temperature, assuming preferences for spawning at 14 –15°C and avoidance for temperatures below 12°C and above 16°C. Regional quotient plots indicated that spawning tolerance to higher temperatures increases progressively with decreasing latitude. Despite the weak evidence for geographical differences in temperature tolerance that may have some genetic origin, the degree of spatio-temporal overlap in sardine-spawning activity within Atlantic European waters is unlikely to promote any reproductive isolation in that area.  相似文献

Pigment composition and size distribution of phytoplankton were analysed in a group of Mediterranean salt marshes, where hydrology is dominated by sudden inputs during sea storms, followed by long periods of confinement. These marshes are characterized by a low inorganic–organic nutrient ratio, and inorganic nitrogen is especially scarce due to denitrification. Nutrients were the main factor affecting phytoplankton biomass, while zooplankton grazing did not control either phytoplankton community composition, or their size distribution. The relative abundance of the different phytoplankton groups was analysed by correspondence analysis using the pigment composition measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analysed with the CHEMTAX programme. In this analysis, phytoplankton pigment composition was correlated with two nutrient gradients. The first gradient was the ratio of nitrate–total nitrogen (TN), since the different phytoplankton groups were distributed according to their eco–physiological differences in nitrogen uptake. The second gradient was correlated with total nutrient loading. Biomass size distributions frequently showed a lack of intermediate sized nanophytoplankton (2.5–4 μm in diameter), and the importance of this lack of intermediate sizes correlated with dinoflagellate biomass. These results suggested that in confined environments, where nutrients are mainly in an organic form, dinoflagellates take advantage of their mixotrophy, by competing and grazing on smaller phytoplankters simultaneously.  相似文献

Reproductive period and size at maturity of the brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis were analyzed for correspondence to sea surface temperature (SST) in three zones of the Gulf of California. Mature females from fishing areas in the north (Puerto Peñasco), center (Guaymas), and south (Mazatlán), and monthly SST were examined. Average SST for 1983–2000 decreased from Mazatlán (26.2±0.2°C) to Puerto Peñasco (22.6±0.3°C). The seasonal variation in SST between coldest and warmest months was 7.8°C in Mazatlán and 11.4°C in Puerto Peñasco. The size of shrimps at maturity was inversely correlated to SST, increasing from Mazatlán (121 mm total length) to Puerto Peñasco (154 mm total length). The reproductive period near Mazatlán is year-round. Guaymas and Puerto Peñasco have one period of high intensity. We conclude that warmer water and low seasonal variability allow brown shrimp to reproduce more frequently, but reach smaller size at maturity.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

Baja California represents the northernmost reproductive area for Lepidochelys olivacea. This region is characterized by its high temperature and low humidity. Thus, nest site selection plays an important role in reproductive success. To evaluate the factors affecting site selection for oviposition Las Barracas Beach, located in the south of the peninsula, was visited, from August to November 2000, in weekly periods. A density of 2.55 nests ha–1 was estimated from a total of 55 nests counted. A hatching success of 73.7% was observed, with 23.7% mortality and 2.5% of eggs without apparent development (eggs counted=4,031). On the day of oviposition, the relative surface humidity (between 0.75% and 1.75%) and temperature (32°C) preferred by the females for nest construction was determined at the nest site, as well as the mean distance between the nests and the high tide line for that day (17.65 m). Hatching success was affected by humidity and distance. In addition, hatching success was higher between 10 and 30 m above the high tide line measured on the day of oviposition (surface humidity ca. 1%). A total of 874 hatchlings were measured, with an average of 42.1 mm straight carapace length. Larger sizes were found in October and smaller ones in November. Generally speaking, the sizes found here were larger than those obtained in other areas. This is probably due to two factors: (1) the nests in Las Barracas were kept in situ, whereas in other areas nests are sometimes incubated artificially and (2) the nesting population of southern Baja California is different from the eastern Pacific population.Communicated by P.W. The morphologically variable reef coral previously known as Montastraea annularis (Ellis and Solander, 1786) has recently been separated into three species based on differences in morphology, behavior, allele frequencies and some life-history traits of Panamanian specimens. To further investigate the proposed reclassification and its conformity to the biological species concept we conducted reciprocal intra- and inter- specific fertilization experiments with gametes from each of the three species on Florida reefs. With one exception, self-fertilization rates were very low or zero. Within-species crosses resulted in production of planulae, as did all inter-species (hybrid) crosses, but there was much variation in fertilization success within each type of cross. In an experiment with separated gametes, hybrid crosses between M. annularis and M. franksi produced more larvae than within-species crosses for each species. Hybridization crosses between M. faveolata and the other two species produced fewer larvae than did within- M. faveolata crosses in the experiment with separated gametes, but many larvae resulted when the hybridizations were performed by mixing entire gamete bundles. Additional observations showed that M. franksi had 20% larger eggs and fewer eggs per gamete bundle than did the other two species and that it consistently spawned 1 to 1.5 h before the others, a potential temporal barrier to hybridization. These results indicate that there is no inherent pre-zygotic barrier to cross-fertilization among the three morphological species, although post-zygotic survival and fertility remain to be determined. We used the photoacoustic technique for characterization of the thermal properties of adult shells of American oyster Crassostrea virginica (Gmelin, 1791) and the mussel Ischadium recurvum (Rafinesque, 1820). Heat transport is more efficient in C. virginica than in I. recurvum shells, reflecting the different architecture, microstructure, and composition of the two kinds of shells. The Ebre (Ebro) Delta is one of the most important wetland areas in the western Mediterranean. Ca. 40 % of the delta plain is less than 0.5 m above mean sea level and part of the southern margin of the delta is at mean sea level in an area protected by dikes. Both mean rates of secular subsidence in the Ebre Delta and eustatic sea level rise are ca. 1 – 2 mm/yr. Thus, the present annual relative sea level rise (RSLR) rate in the Ebre Delta may be at least 3 mm/yr. Measured accretion rates in the delta range from 4 mm/yr in the wetlands surrounding the river mouth to <0.1 mm/yr in impounded salt marshes and rice fields. The annual sediment deficit in the delta plain to offset RSLR is close to 1 million m3/yr. Accretion rates in the rice fields prior to the construction of large dams in the Ebre watershed were higher than RSLR rates, from 3 – 15 mm/yr. At present, >99 % of the riverine sediments are retained in the reservoirs and rice fields are losing ca. 0.2 mm/yr. Future management plans should take RSLR into account and include control of freshwater and sediment flows from the river in order to offset negative effects from waterlogging and salt intrusion, and maintain land elevation. This will include the partial removal of sediments trapped behind the Ribarroja and Mequinença dams. Stocks and inputs of sediments in the corresponding reservoirs are large enough for land elevation of ca. 50 cm in the whole delta plain. Advantages of this solution include (1) new sediments to the delta to offset subsidence (via rice fields) and coastal retreat, (2) enhanced functioning of the delta (productivity and nutrient processing), (3) avoidance of accumulation of sediments in the reservoirs. Hence, it is important to manage river discharges at the dams from an integrated viewpoint, whereas currently only hydropower and agricultural requirements are considered. It is also crucial to maintain periods of high discharge, to have enough river energy to transport as much sediments as possible.  相似文献
