The aim of this work consists on determining biomass fuels properties and studying their relation with fixed and variable costs of stores and handling systems. To do that, dimensions (length and diameter), bulk density, particle density and durability of several brands and batches of wood pellets and briquettes were tested, according to international standards. Obtained results were compared with those in literature. Bulk density tests were applied for several other biomass fuels too, and later used to determinate which ones of all the biomass-fuels tested are economically more profitable for a typical transport/store system made of a screw conveyor and a concrete bunker silo.  相似文献

Placental development is a major cause of a successful pregnancy, and in the presence of placental dysfunction, there is a higher risk of pregnancy complications. Doppler technology can be used for screening and detecting the more common pregnancy-associated diseases like preeclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation, and perinatal loss. The conventional (hot pressing or HP) and the novel (spark plasma sintering or SPS) consolidation techniques were compared when processing Ti–Al2O3–TiC powders obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). It was found that the two different methods are able to produce similar materials, in some cases (Vickers hardness and wear rate) slightly better for SPSed samples. However, SPS does not need sintering temperatures as high as HP to obtain fully dense products. Most significantly, processing times were strongly reduced when adopting the SPS technique instead of HP, i.e. 4–7 min and about 5 h, respectively. Finally, when the total energies required during each SPS or HP experiment were compared, it was found that the use of the SPS technology allowed for an energy saving in the order of 90–95%. This fact makes SPS significantly advantageous from environmental and economical points of view compared to HP.  相似文献

A previous study predicted the evolution of monogamy in symbiotic crustaceans inhabiting scarce, relatively small hosts in tropical environments where predation risk away from hosts is high. This prediction was tested in the shrimp Pontonia margarita, which inhabits the pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica. A total of 68 oysters were collected from the intertidal and shallow subtidal at two islands (Islas Secas [N 27° 55′, W 82° 03′] and Isla de La Coiba [N 27° 50′, W 97° 03′]) off the eastern tropical Pacific coast on 15 and 17 March 2007, respectively. The population structure, distribution, male-female association pattern, and relative growth of the major claw and pleura of the second abdominal segment of each shrimp retrieved were examined. Shrimps were found as heterosexual pairs in the mantle cavity of hosts more frequently than would be expected by chance alone. Males occurred with females in the same host, independent of the reproductive condition of the female or the stage of development of brooded embryos. This observation, and strong correlations between the host and shrimp body size in both males and females suggest a long-term association between males and females in each host. Sexual dimorphism in body size was minor, with males being just slightly smaller than females. In agreement with predictions for monogamous species, the major claw of males did not display positive allometry, which has been generally reported for polygamous shrimps. In turn, the pleura of the second abdomen presented negative allometry in males but positive allometry in females. All available information suggests that Pontonia margarita has a socially monogamous mating system with males and females forming exclusive pairs in their hosts.  相似文献

Parasites relying on trophic transmission to complete their life cycles often induce modifications of their host's behavior in ways that may increase their susceptibility to predation by final hosts. These modifications have often been interpreted as parasite adaptations, but very few studies have demonstrated that host manipulation has fitness benefits for the parasite. The aim of the present study was to address the adaptive significance of parasite manipulation by coupling observations of behavioral manipulation to estimates of trophic transmission to the definitive host in the natural environment. We show that the acanthocephalan parasite Pomphorhynchus laevis manipulates the drifting behavior of one of its intermediate hosts, the amphipod Gammarus pulex, but not of a sympatric host, the introduced amphipod Gammarus roeseli. We found a 26.3-28.3 times higher proportion of infected G. pulex in the stomach content of one of the definitive hosts of P. laevis, the bullhead Cottus gobio, than in the benthos. No such trend was observed for G. roeseli. The bell-shaped curve of mean parasite abundance (MPA) relative to host size observed in G. pulex also supported an increased predation mortality of P. laevis-infected individuals compared to uninfected amphipods. Again, no such pattern was observed in G. roeseli. Furthermore, our results indicate that the modifications induced by P. laevis are specific to the definitive host and do not increase the risk of predation by inappropriate hosts, here the adult edible frog Rana esculenta. Overall, our study is original in that it establishes, under field conditions, a direct link between parasitic manipulation and increased transmission to the definitive host, and more importantly, identifies the specificity of the manipulation both in the intermediate host species and toward the definitive host.  相似文献

The recent global financial crisis has highlighted the need for balanced and efficient investments in the reduction of the greenhouse effect caused by emissions of CO2 on a global scale. In a previous paper, the authors proposed a mathematical model describing the dynamic relation of CO2 emission with investment in reforestation and clean technology. An efficient allocation of resources to reduce the greenhouse effect has also been proposed. Here, this model is used to provide estimates of the investments needed in land reforestation and in the adoption of clean technologies for an optimum emission and abatement of CO2, for the period of 1996–2014. The required investments are computed to minimize deviations with respect to the emission targets proposed in the Kyoto Protocol for European Countries. The emission target can be achieved by 2014 with investments in reforestation peaking in 2004, and a reduction of the expected GDP of 42%, relative to 2006. Investments in clean technology should increase between 2008 and 2010 with maximum transfer figures around 70 million American dollars. Total (cumulative) costs are, however, relatively high depending on the price of carbon abatement and the rate at which the expected CO2 concentration in the atmosphere should be reduced. Results highlight the advantages for policy makers to be able to manage investments in climate policy more efficiently, controlling optimum transfers based on a portfolio of actions that tracks a pre-defined CO2 concentration target.  相似文献
