An alternative method of estimating relative demand among nonconsumptive uses of wildlife and among wildlife species is proposed. A demand intensity score (DIS), derived from the relative extent of an individual's involvement in outdoor recreation and conservation activities, is used as a weighting device to adjust the importance of preference rankings for wildlife uses and wildlife species relative to other members of a survey population. These adjusted preference rankings were considered to reflect relative demand levels (RDLs) for wildlife uses and for species by the survey population. This technique may be useful where it is not possible or desirable to estimate demand using traditional economic means. In one of the findings from a survey of municipal conservation commission members in Massachusetts, presented as an illustration of this methodology, poisonous snakes were ranked third in preference among five groups of reptiles. A general conceptual watershed-lake model of the complex interactions among climatic conditions, watershed location and characteristics,
lake morphology, and fish predation was used to evaluate limnological characteristics of high mountain lakes. Our main hypothesis
was that decreasing elevation in mountainous terrain corresponds to an increase in diversity of watershed size and lake area,
depth, temperature, nutrient concentrations, and productivity. A second hypothesis was that watershed location and aspect
relative to climatic gradients within mountainous terrain influences the limnological characteristics of the lakes. We evaluated
these hypotheses by examining watershed location, aspect and size; lake morphology; water quality; and phytoplankton and zooplankton
community characteristics among high mountain forest and subalpine lakes in Mount Rainier National Park.
Although many of the comparisons between all forest and subalpine lakes were statistically insignificant, the results revealed
trends that were consistent with our hypotheses. The forest lake group included more lakes with larger watersheds, larger
surface areas, greater depths, higher concentrations of nutrients, and higher algal biovolumes than did the group of subalpine
lakes. Deep lakes, which were mostly of the forest lake type, exhibited thermal stratification and relatively high values
of some of the water-quality variables near the lake bottoms. However, the highest near-surface water temperatures and phytoplankton
densities and the taxonomic structures of the phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages were more closely related to geographical
location, which corresponded to a west-east climate gradient in the park, than to lake type. Some crustacean and rotifer taxa,
however, were limited in distribution by lake type.
Fish predation did not appear to play an important role in the structure of the crustacean zooplankton communities at the
genus level with the exception of Mowich Lake, where crustacean taxa were absent from the zooplankton community. This was

ABSTRACT. The limited success of command-and-control policies for reducing nonpoint source (NPS) water pollution mandated under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (FWPCA) has prompted increased interest in economic incentive policies as an alternative control mechanism. A variety of measures have been proposed ranging from fairly minor modifications of existing policies to substantial revisions including watershed-wide polices that rely on economic incentives. While greater use of economic incentive policies, such as environmental bonds and point/nonpoint source trading is being advocated in the reauthorization of the CWA, the expected effects of individual proposals will be modest. The characteristics of NPS pollution, namely uncertainty and asymmetrical information, underscores that there is no single, ideal policy instrument for controlling the many types of agricultural NPS water pollution. Some of the usual incentive-based policies, such as effluent taxes, are not well suited to the task. Individual incentive policies proposed for the reauthorized CWA, such as pollution trading or deposit/refund systems, are not broadly applicable for heterogeneous pollution situations. Economic incentive policies may be appropriate in some cases, and command-and-control policies will be preferable in others and may in fact complement incentive policies. 相似文献

Recreational use of streams in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has increased remarkably during recent years. To better manage the stream resource for visitor needs and at the same time preserve it for future generations, a user study was initiated in 1978. Use patterns, both spatial and temporal, and possible accompanying ecological impacts at three streams were investigated. Sampling was conducted at several sites per stream. The findings indicated that use was concentrated during afternoons and at certain streams and study sites. In addition, different types of users partitioned the streams according to stream morphology (form or structure of pools, riffles, etc.). Major impacts observed were soil compaction and erosion along the streambanks and physical disturbance of the stream bottoms by moving and placing stones to construct dams and raceways. 相似文献

ABSTRACT A conceptual framework and the systematic collection of reliable information for application within the framework are the cornerstones of effective water planning. The ideal of strengthening these cornerstones was a driving force behind formation of the Water Resources Council and Council efforts, during its life, to develop the Principles and Standards and to complete two National Water Assessments. The Assessments contained voluminous data but never really became an integral component of the national water planning process. Dromaeosaurids from the Maastrichtian of North America have a poor fossil record and are known largely from isolated teeth, which have typically been referred to taxa based on more complete material from earlier Campanian strata. An almost complete maxilla with well-preserved dentition and an associated dentary from the Hell Creek Formation of Montana are used to establish a new dromaeosaurid taxon in the latest Maastrichtian, immediately prior to the end-Cretaceous extinction event. Acheroraptor temertyorum gen. et sp. nov. is differentiated from other dromaeosaurids on the basis of a hypertrophied postantral wall that projects posteriorly into the antorbital fenestra, a maxillary fenestra positioned low in the antorbital fossa and directly posterior to the promaxillary fenestra, and distinctive dentition with marked apicobasal ridges. The new material allows a dromaeosaurid from the Maastrichtian of North America to be placed within a phylogenetic framework for the first time. Phylogenetic analysis suggests Acheroraptor is a velociraptorine that is more closely related to Asian dromaeosaurids, including Tsaagan and Velociraptor, than it is to Dromaeosaurus, Saurornitholestes, or any other taxon from North America. As part of the Lancian Tyrannosaurus–Triceratops fauna, A. temertyorum is the latest occurring dromaeosaurid. Its relationships and occurrence suggest a complex historical biogeographic scenario that involved multiple, bi-directional faunal interchanges between Asia and North America during the Late Cretaceous. 相似文献

Linuche unguiculata (Schwartz) seasonally forms patches in the Caribbean Sea and Indo-Pacific Ocean. Eighteen patches of medusae varying from about 500 m2 to nearly 1 km2 in area, were documented along the Belize barrier reef in March and April 1987, April 1988, and March and April 1990. The shape of each patch and the inter-medusa distances varied with wind velocity. At low wind speed (<4 m s-1) patches were elliptical or circular and the individual medusae were separated by distances of 0.5 m, whereas at higher speeds windrows were evident and medusae were closer together. Windrows probably form by horizontal advection owing to convergence by Langmuir circulations. Because individual patches might exist for up to 4 mo as they drift downwind, and because winds of sufficient speed to produce Langmuir circulations do not always occur, a mechanism is necessary to maintain patch integrity during calms. In situ observations and in vitro video recording showed that the medusae swam in horizontal, near-surface, circular, clockwise trajectories. Although swimming speed was relatively high (up to 8 cm s-1). net displacement velocity can be low (<1 cm s-1). Thus, circular swimming probably reduces cluster breakup. DOI: 10.1111/j.1752-1688.2010.00464.x Abstract: Information about long-term variability of streamflow is important to allocate water resources, but few historical records extend more than 75 years into the past, requiring proxy records to evaluate flow prior to that time. Flow proxies have been found in tree-ring widths in temperate regions, but have rarely been used in humid subtropical environments because the relationship between tree growth and climate was believed to be weakened by limited seasonality and stress on tree growth from drought conditions. Tree-ring residual chronologies from two forests sampled from northern Florida correlate well with historical annual discharge (r² values as high as 0.47) from 3 of 15 river-gauging stations that were used to compare with the tree-ring chronologies. The best correlations occur where streamflow has little contribution from spring discharge or continuous flow from lakes and wetlands. Streams lack correlations with the tree-ring residual chronologies (r² values as low as 0.0002) where springs and continuous discharge from lakes mute variations in their flow. Tree-ring chronologies appear to be useful for reconstruction of prehistorical variations of some streamflow in humid subtropical regions, but interpretations of the reconstructions must consider the local hydrologic conditions. 相似文献
