The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Region V Clean Lakes Program employs artificial and modified natural
wetlands in an effort to improve the water quality of selected lakes. We examined use of wetlands at seven lake sites and
evaluated the physical and institutional means by which wetland projects are implemented and managed, relative to USEPA program
goals and expert recommendations on the use of wetlands for water quality improvement. Management practices recommended by
wetlands experts addressed water level and retention, sheet flow, nutrient removal, chemical treatment, ecological and effectiveness
monitoring, and resource enhancement. Institutional characteristics recommended included local monitoring, regulation, and
enforcement and shared responsibilities among jurisdictions. Institutional and ecological objectives of the National Clean
Lakes Program were met to some degree at every site. Social objectives were achieved to a lesser extent. Wetland protection
mechanisms and appropriate institutional decentralization were present at all sites. Optimal management techniques were employed
to varying degrees at each site, but most projects lack adequate monitoring to determine adverse ecological impacts and effectiveness
of pollutant removal and do not extensively address needs for recreation and wildlife habitat. There is evidence that the
wetland projects are contributing to improved lake water quality; however, more emphasis needs to be placed on wetland protection

A general conceptual watershed-lake model of the complex interactions among climatic conditions, watershed location and characteristics,
lake morphology, and fish predation was used to evaluate limnological characteristics of high mountain lakes. Our main hypothesis
was that decreasing elevation in mountainous terrain corresponds to an increase in diversity of watershed size and lake area,
depth, temperature, nutrient concentrations, and productivity. A second hypothesis was that watershed location and aspect
relative to climatic gradients within mountainous terrain influences the limnological characteristics of the lakes. We evaluated
these hypotheses by examining watershed location, aspect and size; lake morphology; water quality; and phytoplankton and zooplankton
community characteristics among high mountain forest and subalpine lakes in Mount Rainier National Park.
Although many of the comparisons between all forest and subalpine lakes were statistically insignificant, the results revealed
trends that were consistent with our hypotheses. The forest lake group included more lakes with larger watersheds, larger
surface areas, greater depths, higher concentrations of nutrients, and higher algal biovolumes than did the group of subalpine
lakes. Deep lakes, which were mostly of the forest lake type, exhibited thermal stratification and relatively high values
of some of the water-quality variables near the lake bottoms. However, the highest near-surface water temperatures and phytoplankton
densities and the taxonomic structures of the phytoplankton and zooplankton assemblages were more closely related to geographical
location, which corresponded to a west-east climate gradient in the park, than to lake type. Some crustacean and rotifer taxa,
however, were limited in distribution by lake type.
Fish predation did not appear to play an important role in the structure of the crustacean zooplankton communities at the
genus level with the exception of Mowich Lake, where crustacean taxa were absent from the zooplankton community. This was

There is little information on exposure of marine mammals to genotoxic environmental contaminants. The 32P-postlabeling assay has been successfully used to assess exposure to genotoxic polycyclic aromatic compounds in fish and humans. In the present study, a preliminary investigation showed that polycyclic aromatic compound-like DNA adducts were present in hepatic tissues of harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsi) exposed to petroleum following the Exxon Valdez oil spill. However, for marine mammals, effects from changes in tissue condition on DNA recovery and quality is of concern, because tissue samples are often collected from animals that have been dead for unknown periods of time. To assess the effects of postmortem thermal history on DNA recovery from tissue and on DNA adduct quantitation, samples of harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) hepatic tissue were incubated for up to 10 d at 4 and 30 °C. Only traces (<4 g) of hepatic DNA were recovered from 200 mg of tissue after incubation at 30 °C for 36 h. At 4 °C, DNA (50–130 g) was recovered from tissue incubated for up to 6 d; whereas DNA recovery at 10 d was minimal. Chromatograms of 32P-labeled DNA digests of liver tissue held at 4 and 30 °C and salmon sperm DNA held at 30 °C for 2 d had comparable profiles, suggesting that alteration of DNA bases had occurred during incubation of porpoise liver tissue. Moreover, the chromatograms of DNA extracted from liver tissues of harbor porpoises caught incidentally in a northwest Atlantic fishery, packed in ice and sampled several days later also exhibited similar altered DNA structures. Although, altered DNA structures that can interfere with the DNA adduct quantitation were present in autolyzed tissue, changes in the 32P-postlabeling chromatography conditions can decrease the interference. Moreover, in a study with tissues taken from California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) immediately postmortem and stored at –80 °C until processing, DNA structures associated with tissue breakdown were not observed. The DNA from sea lions, however, had putative age-dependent hepatic DNA modifications, which have a distinctive profile, and must be considered when evaluating exposure of marine mammals to polycyclic aromatic compounds. Overall, the findings showed that with attention to the postmortem thermal history of the tissue samples hepatic DNA adducts, as measured by 32P-postlabeling, have the potential to serve as a biological indicator of exposure of marine mammals to environmental genotoxic compounds. 相似文献

This paper presents the verification of two partial indices proposed for the evaluation of continuous and impulse noise pollution in quarries. These indices, together with the sound power of machines index and the noise hazard index at the workstation, are components of the global index of assessment of noise hazard in the working environment of a quarry. This paper shows the results of acoustic tests carried out in an andesite quarry. Noise generated by machines and from performed blasting works was investigated. On the basis of acoustic measurements carried out in real conditions, the sound power levels of machines and the phenomenon of explosion were determined and, based on the results, three-dimensional models of acoustic noise propagation in the quarry were developed. To assess the degree of noise pollution in the area of the quarry, the continuous and impulse noise indices were used. 相似文献

The exemption for groundwater wells for residential uses from the prior appropriations system, common in the western United States, has eroded in Washington State since about 2000 due to a series of legal cases. Water markets can allow the transfer of an existing water right, typically from an agricultural use, to compensate for the effect of a new residential well. But water must be legally and physically available in a way suitable to satisfy mitigation requirements. A recent court case in the Skagit basin in Northwestern Washington State has effectively halted residential development in rural areas of the basin because no suitable water rights are available to purchase for mitigation. This paper presents and examines the cost‐effectiveness of various water supply mitigation strategies. We find a small‐scale, distributed stream‐side storage system for augmenting instream flow purchased from downstream sources is relatively cost‐effective to mitigate against the effects of domestic groundwater use compared to more common alternatives. We consider transporting water to storage sites by both small‐gauge pipe and by truck. Overall, trucking water to stream‐side storage and release points tends to be more cost‐effective to mitigate against indoor‐use only given current subbasin housing densities, whereas piping for direct streamflow augmentation is more cost‐effective for higher mitigation needs associated with indoor and outdoor use and higher housing densities. 相似文献

This paper analyzes the practices adopted and difficulties experienced by Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) to transfer socially responsible behaviors to suppliers that operate in developing countries. In particular, a multiple case study was conducted on five Italian socially responsible SMEs. It was found that companies use different strategies as well as diverse management systems and tools to address Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) issues along their supply chains (SCs). The paper is innovative mainly since few are the existing studies that investigate the CSR practices adopted by SMEs in the SC. Furthermore, it is argued that our research can be helpful to SME managers willing to deal with CSR issues along their SCs, especially when developing countries are involved. 相似文献

The pay-off of deserting and leaving a mate to care for the offspring alone is generally assumed to depend mainly on the availability of alternative mating partners and on the potential spawning rate of males and females. Eretmodus cyanostictus is a monogamous mouthbrooding cichlid in which the clutch is successively incubated first by the female and then by the male. It has been suggested that parents are constrained to monogamy due to low remating probabilities for both sexes. We tested this hypothesis by varying the sex ratio experimentally. Mate desertion by either sex was not significantly higher when additional potential mates were present (males: 8.3%, females: 0%) than when there were no other same-sex conspecifics present (males: 0%, females: 0%). Males lost their mate to a male intruder during their incubation in 26.7% of cases. Pair members were more active and showed more aggression when same-sex conspecifics were present. Behavioural differences between treatments were strongest during the incubation period of a given sex. If no desertion takes place, sexual conflict may be expressed also on a second level, the amount of parental care each parent provides. Indeed, males took the offspring later when additional females were present, although male incubation time did not differ between treatments. A hitherto undescribed display behaviour of females was clear evidence of a conflict about the timing of shift of young. In conclusion, offering alternative mating opportunities did not strongly favour mate desertion in E. cyanostictus. To develop and implement improved instruments for flood risk management in Germany, the national research programme ‘Risk management of extreme flood events’ (RIMAX), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), was initiated. More than 30 joint projects are in progress under this framework since January 2005. An extended brochure which provides information regarding all projects currently funded by the RIMAX research programme is available from the RIMAX-website (www.rimax-hoch wasser.de). Intensive research has been carried out during the first two years of the funding initiative and several workshops were held to enhance the scientific discussion and the communication between the numerous projects. To develop communication pathways between research and practice RIMAX was presented at the ‘acqua alta 2006’, a trade fair for flood prevention and disaster management. Furthermore, a working group from the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA) is in the process of forming which aims at supporting the transfer of research results into practice. In 2006, five additional projects commenced. However, most of the projects funded in 2005 concentrate on the completion of their research and publishing their findings. A RIMAX-wide concept for the documentation and presentation of the results is currently developed by the coordinating team.
