With the ending of the Cold War, the US Department of Energy is responsible for the remediation of radioactive waste and disposal of land no longer needed for nuclear material production or related national security missions. The task of characterizing the hazards and risks from radionuclides is necessary for assuring the protection of health of humans and the environment. This is a particularly daunting task for those sites that had underground testing of nuclear weapons, where the radioactive contamination is currently inaccessible. Herein we report on the development of a Science Plan to characterize the physical and biological marine environment around Amchitka Island in the Aleutian chain of Alaska, where three underground nuclear tests were conducted (1965–1971). Information on the ecology, geology, and current radionuclide levels in biota, water, and sediment is necessary for evaluating possible current contamination and to serve as a baseline for developing a plan to ensure human and ecosystem health in perpetuity. Other information required includes identifying the location of the salt water/fresh water interface where migration to the ocean might occur in the future and determining groundwater recharge balances, as well as assessing other physical/geological features of Amchitka near the test sites. The Science Plan is needed to address the confusing and conflicting information available to the public about radionuclide risks from underground nuclear blasts in the late 1960s and early 1970s, as well as the potential for volcanic or seismic activity to disrupt shot cavities or accelerate migration of radionuclides into the sea. Developing a Science Plan involved agreement among regulators and other stakeholders, assignment of the task to the Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation, and development of a consensus Science Plan that dealt with contentious scientific issues. Involvement of the regulators (State of Alaska), resource trustees (U S Fish and Wildlife Service), representatives of the Aleut and Pribilof Island communities, and other stakeholders was essential for plan development and approval, although this created tensions because of the different objectives of each group. The complicated process of developing a Science Plan involved iterations and interactions with multiple agencies and organizations, scientists in several disciplines, regulators, and the participation of Aleut people in their home communities, as well as the general public. The importance of including all parties in all phases of the development of the Science Plan was critical to its acceptance by a broad range of regulators, agencies, resource trustees, Aleutian/Pribilof communities, and other stakeholders.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Pesticide runoff from dormant sprayed orchards is a major water quality problem in California's Central Valley. During the past several years, diazinon levels in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers have exceeded water quality criteria for aquatic organisms. Orchard water management, via post‐application irrigation, and infiltration enhancement, through the use of a vegetative ground cover, are management practices that are believed to reduce pesticide loading to surface waters. Field experiments were conducted in Davis, California, to measure the effectiveness of these management practices in reducing the toxicity of storm water runoff. Treatments using a vegetative ground cover significantly reduced peak concentrations and cumulative pesticide mass in runoff for first flush experiments compared with bare soil treatments. Post‐application irrigation was found to be an effective means of reducing peak concentrations and cumulative mass in runoff from bare soil treatments, but showed no significant effect on vegetated treatments.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: To provide a basis for regional hydroclimatic forecasting, New England (NE) precipitation and streamflow are compared with indices for the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, the Pacific North American (PNA) pattern, and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Significant positive correlations are found between the NAO index and monthly streamflow at western inland locations, with the strongest seasonal correlations occurring in winter. Smoothed records for the winter NAO and winter streamflow are highly correlated at some sites, suggesting that interrelationships are most significant in the low frequency spectrum. However, correlations between the NAO and precipitation are not significant, so further examination of other factors is needed to explain the relationship between the NAO and streamflow. NAO related regional air temperature, sea surface temperature (SST), storm tracking, and snowfall variability are possible mechanisms for the observed teleconnection. Exceptionally cool regional air temperatures, and SSTs, and unique regional storm track patterns characterized NE's climate during the famous 1960s drought, suggesting that concurrent (persistent) negative NAO conditions may have contributed to the severity of that event. Monthly and winter averaged regional streamflow variability are also significantly correlated with the PNA index. This, along with results from previous studies, suggests that tropospheric wave character and associated North Pacific SST anomalies are also related to NE regional drought conditions.  相似文献

Nutrients, soluble salts, and pathogenic bacteria in feedlot-pen manure have the potential to cause pollution of the environment. A three-year study (1998-2000) was conducted at a beef cattle (Bos taurus) feedlot in southern Alberta, Canada to determine the effect of bedding material [barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) straw versus wood chips] and season on the chemical and bacterial properties of pen-floor manure. Manure was sampled for chemical content (N, P, soluble salts, electrical conductivity, and pH) and populations of four groups of bacteria (Escherichia coli, total coliforms, and total aerobic heterotrophs at 27 and 39 degrees C). More chemical parameters of manure were significantly (P < or = 0.05) affected by season (SO4, Na, Mg, K, Ca, sodium adsorption ratio [SAR], total C, NO3-N, NH4-N, total P, and available P) than by bedding (K, pH, total C, C to N ratio, NH4-N, and available P). Bedding had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on the four bacterial groups whereas season affected all four groups. Numbers of E. coli and total coliforms (TC) were significantly higher by 1.72 to 2.02 log10 units in the summer than the other three seasons, which was consistent with a strong positive correlation of E. coli and TC with air temperature. The low ratio of bedding to manure in the pens was probably the major cause of the lack of significant bedding effects. Bedding material and seasonal timing of cleaning feedlot pens and land application of manure may be a potential tool to manage nutrients, soluble salts, and pathogens in manure.  相似文献

We present a case in which a Greek couple was considered not to be at risk of having children with homozygous β-thalassaemia, an assessment based largely on the father's belief that he carried α-thalassaemia. After their first child was diagnosed with homozygous β-thalassaemia, the case was re-assessed and both parents were shown to have the haematological profile of β-thalassaemia trait. Screening for the common Mediterranean mutations demonstrated that the mother carries the IVS-1 nt 110 G→A β+ -thalassaemia mutation. Direct nucleotide sequencing of PCR-amplified DNA revealed that the father carries a novel β0-thalassaemia mutation, frameshift codons 9/10 (+T). The couple's second pregnancy was terminated after prenatal testing revealed that the fetus had inherited both parental mutations. This case illustrates the need to confirm the carrier status of individuals prior to assessing their genetic risks, and highlights the importance of being able to identify rare or novel β-thalassaemia mutations.  相似文献

Methylalkylpyrazines in aposematic insects,their hostplants and mimics   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Summary Adults of forty-five aposematic insect species from four orders, and/or, in eight cases, their early stages, were examined for the presence of 2-methoxy-3-alkylpyrazines by coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The survey also included eight cryptic and related species and six unrelated mimics, twelve selected hostplants of those herbivores that had proved positive for such pyrazines, and nine well known toxic plants. Positive results were as follows: aposematic adult species, 26 (58 %); obscurely coloured species, 1 (12.5%); mimics, 2 (33%); host-plants, 5 (42%); well-known toxic plants, 4 (44%). Among the taxonomic groups, these pyrazines were found in the lepidopteran families and subfamilies Papilionidae, Danainae, Heliconiinae, Acraeinae, Zygaenidae and Arctiidae, and among the Coleoptera, in the Lycidae, Cantharidae, Endomychidae, Coccinellidae, Oedemeridae and Meloidae. Single cases of the occurrence of these pyrazines were also detected in the Hemiptera (Cercopidae) and Orthoptera (Pyrgomorphidae). Mimics were found with and without the pyrazines. Among the plants they were detected in Aristolochiaceae, Asclepiadaceae, Asteraceae, Papaveraceae, Passifloraceae, Solanaceae and Urticaceae. Some aposematic and phytophagous insects apparently sequester pyrazines from their hostplants whereas others, particularly the predatory species, manufacture these substancesde novo. Environmental managers need current, accurate information upon which to base decisions. Viable information, especially in developing countries, is often unavailable. Satellite remote sensing is an appropriate and effective data source for mapping the surface of the earth, including a variety of environmental features. Remote-sensing-derived information is enhanced by being one component within a geographic information system (GIS). These techniques were employed to study an expanding delta in East Africa.The Omo River flows from the Ethiopian Highlands into the northern end of Lake Turkana, creating a large delta extending between Ethiopia and Kenya. This isolated and unique wetland feature has expanded by over 500 sq km in the last 15 years as measured by space-borne remote sensing techniques and corroborated by low-altitude aircraft reconnaissance flights.The growth of the delta appears to be a function of both increased sedimentation and decreased lake levels and river flows. Within the delta there has been a selective decline in wildlife and an increase in human activity, both pastoral and agricultural. ABSTRACT: Hypolimnetic aeration is a widely used technique for lake restoration and fisheries enhancement. However, system design still depends on application of “safety factors” to observed oxygen demand rates, in large part because actual oxygen demand may be greater after aeration than before. Laboratory incubations of sediment show that sediment oxygen demand (SOD) rates follow mixed order kinetics, with an initial period of zero order reaction, followed by first order kinetics. The transition from zero to first order kinetics may correspond to the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. This suggests that SOD reaction kinetics are governed by thickness of the diffusive sublayer adjacent to the sediments. Therefore, zero and first order reaction regions correspond with oxygen diffusion limitation and substrate limitation, respectively. Such a mechanism would account for the induced oxygen demand observed following hypolimnetic aeration and would reconcile differences in SOD reaction orders noted in the literature. This paper describes development of equations based on laboratory SOD incubations for predicting induced oxygen demand following hypolimnetic aeration.  相似文献

The article outlines a new approach to the fuelwood problem. The best way to ensure future fuelwood supplies and simultaneously to prevent environmental degradation is to improve the management of woody biomass within existing production systems. The knowledge and techniques being practised within farming communities should be valued and built upon. The starting point is to discover local people's priority concerns and encourage tree production to meet those needs. In this way the fuelwood problem can best be tackled indirectly to achieve the required ends.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: A dynamic programming model is presented for planning the optimal capacity expansion sequence of waste water treatment plants servicing sewerage systems with infiltration/inflow. The model employs a nonlinear deterministic demand function for waste water treatment plant capacity. Model output provides the optimal timing, size, and sequence for treatment plant capacity expansion projects and infiltration/inflow removal projects.
