It has been suggested that differences in body size between consumer and resource species may have important implications for interaction strengths, population dynamics, and eventually food web structure, function, and evolution. Still, the general distribution of consumer-'resource body-size ratios in real ecosystems, and whether they vary systematically among habitats or broad taxonomic groups, is poorly understood. Using a unique global database on consumer and resource body sizes, we show that the mean body-size ratios of aquatic herbivorous and detritivorous consumers are several orders of magnitude larger than those of carnivorous predators. Carnivorous predator-prey body-size ratios vary across different habitats and predator and prey types (invertebrates, ectotherm, and endotherm vertebrates). Predator-prey body-size ratios are on average significantly higher (1) in freshwater habitats than in marine or terrestrial habitats, (2) for vertebrate than for invertebrate predators, and (3) for invertebrate than for ectotherm vertebrate prey. If recent studies that relate body-size ratios to interaction strengths are general, our results suggest that mean consumer-resource interaction strengths may vary systematically across different habitat categories and consumer types.  相似文献

This paper examines various health effects of photochemical air pollution in Japan, primarily through the review of epidemiological studies. Health effects discussed include subjective respiratory symptoms, respiratory function testing, ocular effects, and hospital diagnostic tests. The downward trend in oxidant cautions and paralleled health effects, as reported by the Japanese Environmental Agency, are discussed. This paper reports on the plume rise research project conducted by TVA under sponsorship of the U. S. Public Health Service. Plume rise data were collected at six coal-fired, steam-electric generating stations within the TVA system over a 2-year period. Unit ratings ranged from 173 to 704 Mw with stack heights varying from 250 to 600 ft. An instrumented helicopter and special photographic equipment were used to obtain 1580 separate plume observations and significant related meteorological parameters during stable, neutral, and slightly unstable conditions. The 1580 observations were resolved and consolidated into 133 composite observation periods covering 30 to 120 min. Meteorological parameters and other compiled input data were entered into four principal equations for calculation of plume rise, and calculated plume rise values were compared with observed values. Most equations overestimated plume rise in low wind speed. For moderately high wind speeds, the Carson and Moses and the Concawe equations gave best fit.  相似文献

This paper is directed to those individuals concerned with preserving the local air quality in areas affected by power plant operations. A meteorological forecast and field measurement program has been developed by the Tennessee Valley Authority for limiting stack emissions at the Paradise Steam Plant to preserve the air quality during adverse atmospheric dispersion conditions. Meteorological and plume dispersion criteria, developed from analysis of prior experience, govern the program. The criteria values are designed for limiting surface sulfur dioxide (SO2) concentrations below an established threshold level.

Daily forecasts of vertical wind and temperature distribution, maximum surface temperature, and sky condition are issued each afternoon by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Weather Service, Knoxville, Tennessee. Through use of power plant computer facilities, the forecast data are processed to determine quantitative criteria values. If the values indicate that the threshold level may be exceeded, an Air Pollution Control Notice (APCN) is issued that afternoon for the period 0900–1400 CST the following day, which is the expected period of maximum SO2, surface concentrations. The APCN specifies the allowable SO2 emission rate, in terms of megawatt load generation, which should prevent surface SO2 concentrations from exceeding the established threshold level. Confirmation or cancellation of the APCN is made the following morning, based on plant-site meteorological field measurements taken at 0700–0730 CST. If confirmed, plant load generation is reduced to the designated level by 0900 CST and is continued no later than 1400 CST during the expected period of maximum SO2 surface concentrations.

The APCN conditions identified with the newer and larger TV A power plants with high stacks are associated with one principal regional weather pattern—a large surface high-pressure system, with weak-to-moderate anticyclonic circulation and pronounced stability throughout the lowest few thousand meters. With the limited mixing layer, or sometimes referred to as trapping- or capping-type dispersion associated with this weather condition, relatively high surface concentrations may persist 2–5 hours between 0900–1400 CST.  相似文献

The body of information presented in this paper is directed to those individuals who may be concerned with principal plume dispersion models at coal-burning power plants. About 20 years of comprehensive field surveillance and documentation of dispersion of power plant emissions for a varied range of unit sizes, stack heights, and meteorological conditions have determined the Tennessee Valley Authority’s interpretation of principal plume dispersion models. TVA’s experience indicates that as unit sizes are increased and taller stacks are constructed, the plume dispersion model associated with maximum surface concentrations changes. Maximum surface concentrations for principal plume dispersion models were approximately equal for the early small plants. However, the coning model was considered the critical plume dispersion model because the frequency of recurrence of surface concentrations from this model was appreciably greater than other models.

There were progressive changes because of an increase in unit sizes and stack heights; the magnitude of maximum surface concentrations from the coning model decreased, and the magnitude (relative to the coning model) of concentrations from the inversion breakup model increased. However, with plumes from newer and larger units with higher stacks, the trapping dispersion model became prominent. Finally, by the time unit size had increased to 900 mw and stack height to about 245 meters, as at Bull Run Power Plant, the magnitude of surface concentrations associated with trapping had increased to such a degree that it became the critical dispersion model identified with power plants of this size.  相似文献

The body of information contained in this paper is directed towards individuals concerned with the toxicology and physical state of airborne effluents from pulverized coal-fired stationary sources. A flotation/sedimentation technique was used to separate fly ash from power plant clean-up devices into light, medium, and high density fractions. Large spherical particles were selected from each fraction and examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Attempts were made to identify pleurospheres (filled hollow spheres) by crushing the spheres in situ under the optical microscope. In no cases were filled spheres observed, suggesting that they are not a common structure in fly ash. Several phenomena which generate hollow spheres are discussed.  相似文献

Humanity has emerged as a major force in the operation of the biosphere, with a significant imprint on the Earth System, challenging social-ecological resilience. This new situation calls for a fundamental shift in perspectives, world views, and institutions. Human development and progress must be reconnected to the capacity of the biosphere and essential ecosystem services to be sustained. Governance challenges include a highly interconnected and faster world, cascading social-ecological interactions and planetary boundaries that create vulnerabilities but also opportunities for social-ecological change and transformation. Tipping points and thresholds highlight the importance of understanding and managing resilience. New modes of flexible governance are emerging. A central challenge is to reconnect these efforts to the changing preconditions for societal development as active stewards of the Earth System. We suggest that the Millennium Development Goals need to be reframed in such a planetary stewardship context combined with a call for a new social contract on global sustainability. The ongoing mind shift in human relations with Earth and its boundaries provides exciting opportunities for societal development in collaboration with the biosphere--a global sustainability agenda for humanity.  相似文献
