The Ames bacterial mutagenicity test system was used to evaluate parameters which may affect the mutagenic activity of diesel particulate extracts. The optimal extraction conditions, extractability of mutagens by simulated biological fluids and the effect of collection method were investigated. The role of solvent was examined by extracting diesel particles with methanol, acetone, cyclohexane, ethyl acetate, n-hexane, dichloromethane, benzene and a benzene-ethanol mixture. Of these, the dichloromethane extract exhibited the highest activity in the Ames test, although methanol yielded the largest extractable mass. Diesel particles were also extracted by dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and four other simulated biological fluids for 48 h at 25, 37, and 45°C to study the effects of temperature. The mutagenic activity of the DMSO extract began to decline at temperatures higher than 37°C after 8 h of incubation. Fetal calf serum was the only simulated biological fluid which eluted mutagenic activity from the particles. No activity was detected in the 0.5% bovine serum albumin, simulated lung surfactant and saline extracts. Diesel particles collected by electrostatic precipitation (ESP) and filtration were studied. The mutagenic activities of both extracts were comparable when expressed as revertants per mg of particle. After the extracts were separated into nine fractions by a solvent partitioning scheme, the majority of the activity was found in the neutral-nonpolar II, neutral polar, strong acid and weak acid fractions. The acid salt fraction from the ESP sample was inactive. These results demonstrate that differences in the extraction conditions can result in differences in the mutagenic activity of diesel particulate extract. Since the mutagens in the extracts are not readily extractable by simulated biological fluids, the question of bioavailability of mutagens in diesel particles must be considered in the final assessment of their potential effects in biological systems and organisms. 相似文献

Ambient air quality data, including atmospheric visibility, of Foshan city, a highly polluted city in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), and data obtained by the On-line Air Pollutant Exhaust Monitoring Network (OAPEMN), recently established by the National Emission Monitoring and Control Network for major industrial enterprises, were analyzed and are reported here for the first time, revealing the change in air pollution patterns and its impact on visibility degradation in the last decade. Reduced visibility of less than 8 km (after elimination of rainy and foggy periods) was found 22% of the time from 1998 to 2008, accompanied by elevated levels of pollutants, especially SO2 and PM10, in comparison with that of other developed cities. However, PM10 showed a steady decreasing trend (0.004 mg m???3 year???1) during 2001?C2008, in contrast to the noticeable increase in ambient NO2 concentrations from ~0.020 mg m???3 before 2005 to above 0.050 mg m???3 afterward. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the percentage of reduced visibility strongly correlated with PM10 concentration, suggesting that visibility degradation was directly proportional to the loading of particles. Moreover, the fairly significant correlation between reduced visibility and NO2 concentration also implied that the impact of primary emissions of NO2 and enhanced secondary pollutants, formed via photochemical processes in the atmosphere, could not be ignored. The decreased PM10 levels were obviously the predominant factor for the improvement in visibility (5.0% per 0.01 mg m???3) and were likely due to the implementation of stricter air pollution control measures for industrial exhaust, which also resulted in reduced SO2 pollution levels in the recent 2 years. In particular, the OAPEMN records showed an overall enhanced SO2 removal by 64% in major industrial sectors. The aim of this study is to develop a catalytic method which has advantages over current method to detoxify and degrade environmentally harmful polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A variety of catalysts have been employed in a preliminary study on 1,4-dibromobenzene and 4,4-dibromobiphenyl which may be considered to represent simple analogues of PCBs. The most satisfactory catalysts are those involving [Pd(dppf)] [dppf = 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene], generated in situ from PdCl2(dppf) or Pd(dppf)2. In the presence of the reducing reagent, namely NaBH4, debromination has been achieved at relative mild conditions with high product yields (> 70%). The pryene-degradation bacterium strain USTB-X was newly isolated from the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soil in Beijing Coking Plant, China. The strain was identified as Acinetobacter with respect to its 16S rDNA and morphological and physiological characteristics. The strain was Gram-negative, non-mobile, non-acid-fast, and non-spore-forming, short rods in young culture and 0.8–1.6 μm in diameter and 1.2–2.5 μm long in the stationary phase of growth. Strain USTB-X could utilize pyrene, naphthalene, fluorene, phenanthrene, benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, ethanol, methanol, and Tween 80 as sole source of carbon and energy. The strain could produce biosurfactants which enhanced the removal of pyrene and could remove 63 % of pyrene with an initial concentration of 100 mg·L?1 in 16 days without other substrates. Based on the intermediates analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we also deduced the possible metabolic pathway of strain USTB-X for pyrene biodegradation. Hong Kong, lying just below the Tropic of Cancer (22°17′N, 114°09′E), experiences a strongly seasonal environment, with a
cool almost temperate winter and a hot, tropical, summer. Histological sectioning of the gonads of the high-shore barnacle,
Chthamalus malayensis Pilsbry, showed a seasonal trend in the development of its reproductive organs. Four stages of female gonad development were
identified according to the cell types present: post-spawning, resting, growth and mature stages. The female gonad was mature
from April to November, which was related to seawater temperatures, and entered a resting phase from December to March. Although
the male gonad showed a seasonal developmental trend and reached maximum maturity in summer, the seminal vesicles were full
of spermatozoa and functional throughout the year. The reproductive season of this species is therefore solely dependant upon
the maturity of the female gonad. The estimated maximum number of broods per year was up to 10 and the maximum number of eggs
produced per brood can reach 3,000 eggs. The minimum size for female gonad maturity was 6 mm rostro-carinal diameter (RCD)
at which size, the barnacles were ~6-month old. Sperm production occurred at a smaller size (2 mm=2-month old). Compared with
Chthamalus montagui and Chthamalus stellatus from temperate regions, C. malayensis produced a greater number of broods per year, had a longer reproductive period and faster gonad development. Chthamaloid
barnacles in tropical regions may, therefore, invest more energy per year in reproduction during their life span. Contrary
to the seasonal gonad developmental pattern of C. malayensis in the present study, however, C. malayensis in Singapore (which experiences only slight seasonal variation) had mature female and male gonads throughout the year, further

One-week integrated fine particulate matter (i.e., particles <2.5 microm in diameter; PM2.5) samples were collected continuously with a low-flow rate sampler at a downtown site (Chegongzhuang) and a residential site (Tsinghua University) in Beijing between July 1999 and June 2000. The annual average concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) at the urban site were 23.9 and 8.8 microg m(-3), much higher than those in some cities with serious air pollution. Similar weekly variations of OC and EC concentrations were found for the two sampling sites with higher concentrations in the winter and autumn. The highest weekly variations of OC and EC occurred in the winter, suggesting that combustion sources for space heating were important contributors to carbonaceous particles, along with a significant impact from variable meteorological conditions. High emissions coupled with unfavorable meteorological conditions led to the max weekly carbonaceous concentration the week of November 18-25, 1999. The weekly mass ratios of OC:EC ranged between 2 and 4 for most samples and averaged 2.9, probably suggesting that secondary OC (SOC) is present most weeks. The range of contemporary carbon fraction, based on the C14 analyses of eight samples collected in 2001, is 0.330-0.479. Estimated SOC accounted for approximately 38% of the total OC at the two sites. Average OC and EC concentrations at Tsinghua University were 25% and 18%, respectively, higher than those at Chegongzhuang, which could be attributed to different local emissions of primary carbonaceous particles and gaseous precursors of SOC, as well as different summer photochemical intensities between the two locations. 相似文献

Removal of heavy metals from anaerobically digested sewage sludge by isolated indigenous iron-oxidizing bacteria 总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
The removal of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb) from anaerobically digested sludge from the Yuen Long wastewater treatment plant, Hong Kong, has been studied in a batch system using isolated indigenous iron-oxidizing bacteria. The inoculation of indigenous iron-oxidizing bacteria and the addition of FeSO4 accelerated the solubilization of Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb from the sludge. pH of the sludge decreased with an increase in Fe2+ concentrations and reached a low pH of 2-2.5 for treatments receiving both bacterial inoculation and FeSO4. After 16 days of bioleaching, the following heavy metal removal efficiencies were obtained: Cr 55.3%, Cu 91.5%, Zn 83.3%, Ni 54.4%, and Pb 16.2%. In contrast, only 2.6% of Cr, 42.9% of Cu, 72.1% of Zn, 22.8% of Ni and 0.56% of Pb were extracted from the control without the bacterial inoculation and addition of FeSO4. The residual heavy metal content in the leached sludge was acceptable for unrestricted use for agriculture. The experimental results confirmed the effectiveness of using the isolated iron-oxidizing bacteria for the removal of heavy metals from sewage sludge. 相似文献

Toxaphene is one of the major persistent organic pollutants with global environmental impacts. We have measured total toxaphene and specific congeners concentrations in 19 fish samples collected from the Yukon, Canada using gas chromatography coupled to ion trap MS/MS. The total toxaphene concentrations ranged from 42 to 242 ng/g (mean = 107+/-61 ng/g). The sum of the three specific congeners (Parlar 26, 50 and 62) was within 10-55 ng/g. The ratio of the sum of the three congeners to the total toxaphene varied between 8% and 25% in the fish samples but the ratio may be species specific. Our results suggest that consumption of these Yukon fish should have minimal risk of toxaphene exposure. 相似文献

The present study aimed at studying the transplantation of oysters from a polluted site Lau Fau Shan (existing oyster culture zone) in Deep Bay to two clean sites mariculture zones at Yung Shue O and Kat O. The hydrological data, growth of oyster shell length, mortality and metal contents in whole soft tissue were monitored from February 1993 to February 1994. The high growth phase (increase in shell length) and gametogenesis (decrease in dry weight of whole soft tissue) were noted in winter (with low temperature and high salinity), and slow growth phase and spawning in summer (with high temperature and low salinity). Significant reductions (p<0.05) of Cd, Cr and Pb concentrations (dry wt basis) in soft tissue of transplanted oysters were observed at Kat O by 29, 55 and 29%, respectively, and at Yung Shue O by 34, 44 and 34%, respectively, with respect to the baseline values for the first batch of oysters and the concentrations in samples collected from Lau Fau Shan in the same months. Maximum reductions of total metal burden in whole soft tissue (microg per individual oyster) of the first oyster batch were found for Cd, Cr, Pb and Sb to be 62, 49, 60 and 25%, respectively, at Kat O, and to be 56, 47, 32 and 49%, respectively, at Yung Shue O. For the second batch of oysters transplanted to Yung Shue O in July 1993, significant reductions (p<0.05) of Cd concentration and total burden of Cd by 60 and 21%, respectively, were observed in February 1994. The high accumulated mortality and the significant (p<0.05) lower growth rate of the transplanted oysters illustrated that the best time for transplantation of oysters should be between the end of gametogenesis and the start of spawning (i.e. January and February), and the oysters should not be kept for longer than 3 months at the transplantation sites. 相似文献

An inventory of mercury emissions from anthropogenic activities in China is compiled for the year 1999 from official statistical data. We estimate that China's emissions were 536 (±236) t of total mercury. This value includes open biomass burning, but does not include natural sources or re-emission of previously deposited mercury. Approximately 45% of the Hg comes from non-ferrous metals smelting, 38% from coal combustion, and 17% from miscellaneous activities, of which battery and fluorescent lamp production and cement production are the largest. Emissions are heaviest in Liaoning and Guangdong Provinces, where extensive smelting occurs, and in Guizhou Province, where there is much small-scale combustion of high-Hg coal without emission control devices. Emissions are gridded at 30×30 min spatial resolution. We estimate that 56% of the Hg in China is released as Hg0, 32% as Hg2+, and 12% as Hgp. Particulate mercury emissions are high in China due to heavy burning of coal in residential and small industrial settings without PM controls. Emissions of Hg2+ from coal-fired power plants are high due to the absence of flue-gas desulfurization units, which tend to dissolve the soluble divalent mercury. Metals smelting operations favor the production of elemental mercury. Much of the Hg is released from small-scale activities in rather remote areas, and therefore the activity levels are quite uncertain. Also, emissions test data for Chinese sources are lacking, causing uncertainties in Hg emission factors and removal efficiencies. Overall, we calculate an uncertainty level of ±44% (95% confidence interval) in the estimate of total emissions. We recommend field testing of coal combustors and smelters in China to improve the accuracy of these estimates. 相似文献
