The results are presented of a comparison of four different methods of interpolating observed hydrocarbon depths in monitoring wells, as well as a comparison of different methods of selecting sampling points for interpolation. The results provide criteria for selecting one interpolation method over another, under different scenarios. The methods analyzed are: (1) inverse-distance weighting; (2) punctual kriging; (3) minimum surface curvature; and (4) Akima's quintic polynomial. 相似文献

Antimony concentrations in surface soils were found to decrease with increasing distance from an antimony smelter. This pattern was also found in moss bags exposed in the same area. At three sites close to the smelter, antimony concentrations in soil and vegetation were much higher than at a rural control site and published background levels. Maximum soil and plant concentrations on a dry weight basis of 1489 mg kg(-1) and 336 mg kg(-1), respectively, were found, compared to background levels of <1 mg kg(-1). Field exposure of grass in pots of uncontaminated soil and a laboratory experiment using soils from near the smelter suggested that the antimony in vegetation was largely due to continued aerial deposition and not to uptake from soil. 相似文献

Effects of two "enhanced" treatments (drying and composting mesophilic anaerobically digested (MAD) biosolid) on nutrient leaching were investigated. Repacked sandy or sandy loam textured soil cores amended with fresh, dried and composted MAD biosolid (250 kg N ha(-1)), were investigated under steady-state hydrological conditions. Two 24 h, 4.5 mm h(-1) rainfall events, with a 14-day interval, were simulated using water-tracers. Losses of nitrate from the sandy loam soil during rainfall event 1 (43.9-68.0 mg kg(-1)) were significantly greater (P < or = 0.05) than during event 2 (6.4-11.9 mg kg(-1)). Phosphate losses were significantly greater (P < or = 0.05) during event 2 (up to 0.30 mg kg(-1)) compared to the first (< 0.05 mg kg(-1)). The sand soil showed similar effects. Losses of nitrate-N (percentage of total N applied) from the sand soil were small (around 0.06% for fresh/dried and 0.63% for composted MAD biosolids). Losses of nitrate-N from the sandy loam soil were greater; 4% for fresh and dried and 3% for composted MAD biosolids. This research showed that drying MAD biosolid had little impact on nitrate and phosphate losses from soil compared to fresh MAD biosolid. The effect of composting MAD biosolid on nutrient losses was more variable. 相似文献

Populations of two species of small mammal, the field vole (Microtus agrestis L.) and the bank vole (Clethrionomys glareolus L.), inhabiting grasslands contaminated by industrial sources of fluoride were examined for fluoride concentrations in skeletal tissue and for morphological changes in the teeth. Concentrations of fluoride in teeth and bones were higher for C. glareolus than for M. agrestis at the chemical works and smelter sites. Severe dental lesions were recorded on the incisor and molar teeth of both species at the chemical works and smelter sites, with less marked damage at the mine tailings dam. This is attributed to inter-site differences in fluoride speciation and the consequent effects on the availability of fluoride in the diet for bioassimilation. 相似文献

This paper presents some early thinking as to how the costs and benefits of HIA might be assessed. After considering previous work it uses a comprehensive HIA in Dulwich, SE London as a case study to highlight the possibilities and difficulties of collecting necessary data on costs and benefits. It then sets a context for developing a cost–benefit framework for analysis. The framework is viewed alongside the major types of economic evaluation. We report a growth-retarded infant with congenital heart disease and maternal isodisomy for chromosome 16. Non-mosaic trisomy 16 was detected at mid-trimester chorionic villus sampling, performed because biochemical screening indicated an increased Down's syndrome risk. Further karyotyping analysis of the placenta, after delivery, showed a 50 per cent mosaic trisomy 16. The infant had an atrioventricular (A-V) canal defect, scoliosis, and several minor dysmorphic features. Although uniparental disomy for chromosome 16 has been reported previously, to our knowledge this is the first case of uniparental isodisomy for chromosome 16 which has been investigated with multiple DNA probes. 相似文献

planted material in a salt marsh restoration project and from native material in adjacent marsh areas along the Indian River,
Clinton, Connecticut, USA. After ten years the replanted area still has sites devoid of vegetation. The salt marsh plants
introduced there were devoid of VAM fungi, while high marsh species from the adjacent undisturbed region showed consistent
infection, leading the authors to suggest that VAM fungal infection of planting stocks may be a factor in the success of marsh

Poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAs) are a class of bacterially-derived polymers that are naturally biodegradable through the action
of extracellular depolymerase enzymes secreted by a number of different bacteria and fungi. In this paper we describe the
development of topographical imaging protocols (by both scanning electron microscopy; SEM, and confocal microscopy; CM) as
a means of monitoring the biodegradation of solution cast films of poly(3-hydroxybutanoate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (P3HB/3HHx) and medium-chain-length (mcl-) PHA. Pseudomonas lemoignei and Comamonas P37C were used as sources for PHA depolymerase enzymes as these bacteria are known to degrade at least one of the polymers
in question. SEM revealed the bacterial colonization of the film surfaces while CM permitted the comparative assessment of
the roughness of the film surfaces upon exposure to the two bacterial strains. By dividing the total surface area of the film
(A′) by the total area of the scan (A) it was possible to monitor biodegradation by observing differences in the topography
of the film surface. Prior to inoculation, P3HB/3HHx films had an A′/A ratio of 1.06. A 24-h incubation with P. lemoignei increased the A′/A ratio to 1.47 while a 48- and 120-h incubation with Comamonas resulted in A′/A ratios of 1.16 and 1.33, respectively. These increases in the A′/A ratios over time demonstrated an increase
in the irregularity of the film surface, indicative of PHA polymer breakdown.
