Verification of forecasts of COH levels at the Downtown Sampling Station using our objective forecast method developed in conjunction with the Allegheny County Bureau of Air Pollution Control gave excellent results. The next step was to expand the area of forecast coverage.

COH data taken from July 1968 through June 1969 from six sampling stations located roughly in a large concentric arc around the Downtown Station were studied. Three of the stations are located in river valleys near large industrial plants and the other three are located on higher terrain in suburban areas.

COH levels of Low, Moderate, High, and Very High (where Low = 0–0.9, Moderate = 1.0–1.9, High = 2.0–3.0, and Very High = >3.0) were used.

The total number of occurrences of High and Very High COHS at the Downtown Station was 10.7% of the total data sample. This was more than twice the frequency of any of the outlying stations.

An evaluation of the statistical frequencies indicate the Downtown Station can safely be used as a “control station” in forecasting Low or Moderate COH levels for the six surrounding stations. However, the occurrence of High or Very High COH levels at the six outlying stations do not occur with a high enough statistical consistency to be predicted by using the forecast value of the Downtown Station.

The valley stations exhibit the characteristics of separate sub air basins particularly during a period in which morning inversions occur for two or more consecutive days and the average daily wind speed does not exceed 4 m/sec.

The results show it is possible to forecast only Low or Moderate COH levels for each of the six outlying stations by using statistical correlations derived from the Downtown Station. Separate objective forecasts which relate the pollution buildup in each valley sub air basin must be used when High or Very High COHS are forecast at the Downtown Station.  相似文献

With respect to health effects and types of emission sources, carbon monoxide is different from SO2 and airborne participates. The effects of nontoxic CO levels are temporary and reversible. The primary sources are automobiles and trucks, and concentrations are often highly localized. A model simulating pollutant exchange with isolated leaves that integrates factors which have been found to be important in regulating pollutant uptake by leaves is presented. The model is patterned after an electrical analogue simulator and was designed to emphasize the effects of pollutant and leaf properties on the process. The article discusses the relative significance of factors affecting gas transfer, sorption of pollutants by leaf surfaces, and pollutant solubility and fate on the uptake process. Data is presented showing uptake of ozone by exposed mesophyll and several epidermal surfaces chosen for their different surface characteristics. The model was used to derive a mathematical expression for the exchange process which was rearranged to define internal (average) pollutant solute concentration in terms of external concentration, leaf and boundary layer diffusion resistance, surface sorption and pollutant solubility. The importance of estimating internal solute concentration is discussed.  相似文献

Measurements of natural draft cooling tower plume behavior, as well as meteorological variables, were obtained from aircraft flights near major power plants of the American Electric Power System. Persistence of the visible plume to great distances depends essentially on ambient humidity. Atmospheric stability at plume elevation was also important. Cooling tower-induced fog at ground-level was never observed in any of the tests, and aerodynamic downwash of the visible plume was absent also. The cooling towers did cause modification of natural clouds and they occasionally shadowed some local areas from the sun. Merging of the stack and cooling tower plumes was a common occurrence.  相似文献

The diffusion battery, an assembly of circular tubes or rectangular channels, is one of the best devices available for measuring the size and size distribution of submicron aerosols in the diameter range 0.002 to 0.2 µ m. The performance of these batteries is known from molecular diffusion theory, but until now has not been checked experimentally in this size range because of the lack of the necessary monodisperse aerosols. Experimental measurements on singly charged monodisperse aerosols from 0.01 µm to 0.1 µ m are described using a General Electric and a Pollak condensation nucleus counter to measure the aerosol penetration through the stages of a set of portable diffusion batteries in series. Particle sizes in the range tested could be selected at will by adjusting the voltage of an electric mobility classifier. The fraction of aerosol of a given size passing through each battery stage was found to agree closely with the penetration calculated from molecular diffusion theory for that size. This shows that the theory is correct and confirms that the aerosol produced by the electric mobility classifier was monodisperse. In addition, it was found that the difference in penetration between a charged versus a neutralized aerosol was insignificant except for the smallest aerosols used.  相似文献

A Wind Tunnel Study of Gaseous Pollutants in City Street Canyons   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Steady state mean concentrations of tracer gas were measured in a 400:1 scale model of an idealized city with variable geometry placed within a wind tunnel at various orientations to the mean flow for a free stream velocity of 6.8 ft/sec. The tracer gas was released from two parallel line sources to simulate lanes of traffic in an effort to quantify the persistence of pollution as well as the mean values realized at street levels. An aerodynamically rough turbulent boundary layer of neutral thermal stratification was employed to simulate the atmosphere. Values of concentration measured in the model city were converted to prototype concentrations in ppm and compared to National Ambient Air Quality Standards. It was shown that single isolated structures may cause favorable mixing of pollution downwind but very high concentrations exist in the immediate leeward vicinity of the building. Two favorable geometries for city blocks tested were found to reduce pedestrian exposure to pollution both near heavy traffic congestion and downwind. It was concluded that the pollutant dilution was controlled by the mean flow rather than by turbulent diffusion and that the lateral spread of the plume was slight as one proceeded downwind of the line source. The combination of favorable geometry and higher dilution velocities may bring pollution levels down to existing Air Quality Standards. The body of information presented in this paper should interest city planners and air quality monitoring personnel, as well as those researchers attempting to study and model flow in city street canyons. It provides order of magnitude estimates on pedestrian and office worker exposure to pollutants under a wide range of conditions.  相似文献

New Metal Emission Patterns in Road Traffic Environments   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
The increased awareness of traffic as a major diffuse metal emission source emphasizes the need for more detailed information on the various traffic-related sources and how and where the metals are dispersed. In this study, metal emission patterns in the road traffic environment were examined from the perspective of different surrounding factors, e.g. the importance of intersections, deceleration, vehicle speed and traffic density. A total of 148 topsoil samples from 18 south Swedish roads were analysed (using GFAAS) for traffic-emitted metals, i.e. Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn. The roadside topsoil metal concentrations were used to examine correlations between metals and surrounding factors. The studied metals were divided into three groups corresponding to different emission sources: metals from decelerating activities (Cu, Sb and Zn), metals as historical residues from the combustion of petrol (Pb and Cd), and non-source-specific metals (Cr and Ni). It was found that Cu and Sb, despite their rather short history as traffic-emitted metals, have increased more than eightfold in roadside soils compared to background levels. The major source of road traffic related Cu and Sb is brake linings. The significant increase of Cu and Sb in roadside topsoil stresses the need for metal transport studies as well as effect studies of these metals. Metals emitted due to decelerating activities were not correlated to elevated concentrations near road junctions. Emission patterns of traffic-related metals alongside roads are crucial in order to be able to evaluate the optimal localization of storm water treatment ponds.  相似文献

Nitrate contamination of water sources is a concern where large amounts of nitrogen fertilizers are regularly applied to soils. Ingested nitrate from dietary sources and drinking water can be converted to nitrite and ultimately to N-nitroso compounds, many of which are known carcinogens. Epidemiologic studies of drinking water nitrate and cancer report mixed findings; a criticism is the use of nitrate concentrations from retrospective drinking water data to assign exposure levels. Residential point-of-use nitrate data are scarce; gaps in historical data for municipal supply finished water hamper exposure classification efforts. We used generalized linear regression models to estimate and compare historical raw water and finished water nitrate levels (1960s--1990s) in single source Iowa municipal supplies to determine whether raw water monitoring data could supplement finished water data to improve exposure assessment. Comparison of raw water and finished water samples (same sampling date) showed a significant difference in nitrate levels in municipalities using rivers; municipalities using other surface water or alluvial groundwater had no difference in nitrate levels. A regional aggregation of alluvial groundwater municipalities was constructed based on results from a previous study showing regional differences in nitrate contamination of private wells; results from this analysis were mixed, dependent upon region and decade. These analyses demonstrate using historical raw water nitrate monitoring data to supplement finished water data for exposure assessment is appropriate for individual Iowa municipal supplies using alluvial groundwater, lakes or reservoirs. Using alluvial raw water data on a regional basis is dependent on region and decade.  相似文献

Portions of the Boulder River watershed contain elevated concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, and zinc in water, sediment, and biota. We measured concentrations of As, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn in biofilm and macroinvertebrates, and assessed macroinvertebrate assemblage and aquatic habitat with the objective of monitoring planned remediation efforts. Concentrations of metals were generally higher in downstream sites compared with upstream or reference sites, and two sites contained metal concentrations in macroinvertebrates greater than values reported to reduce health and survival of resident trout. Macroinvertebrate assemblage was correlated with metal concentrations in biofilm and macroinvertebrates. However, macroinvertebrate metrics were significantly correlated with a greater number of biofilm metals (8) than metals in invertebrates (4). Lead concentrations in biofilm appeared to have the most significant impact on macroinvertebrate assemblage. Metal concentrations in macroinvertebrates were directly proportional to concentrations in biofilm, indicating biofilm as a potential surrogate for monitoring metal impacts in aquatic systems.  相似文献

Manure-derived biochar is the solid product resulting from pyrolysis of animal manures. It has considerable potential both to improve soil quality with high levels of nutrients and to reduce contaminants in water and soil. However, the combustible gas produced from manure pyrolysis generally does not provide enough energy to sustain the pyrolysis process. Supplementing this process may be achieved with spent agricultural plastic films; these feedstocks have large amounts of available energy. Plastic films are often used in soil fumigation. They are usually disposed in landfills, which is wasteful, expensive, and environmentally unsustainable. The objective of this work was to investigate both the energetics of co-pyrolyzing swine solids with spent plastic mulch films (SPM) and the characteristics of its gas, liquid, and solid byproducts. The heating value of the product gas from co-pyrolysis was found to be much higher than that of natural gas; furthermore, the gas had no detectable toxic fumigants. Energetically, sustaining pyrolysis of the swine solids through the energy of the product gas could be achieved by co-pyrolyzing dewatered swine solids (25% m/m) with just 10% SPM. If more than 10% SPM is used, the co-pyrolysis would generate surplus energy which could be used for power generation. Biochars produced from co-pyrolyzing SPM and swine solid were similar to swine solid alone based on the surface area and the 1H NMR spectra. The results of this study demonstrated the potential of using pyrolysis technology to manage two prominent agricultural waste streams (SPM and swine solids) while producing value-added biochar and a power source that could be used for local farm operations.  相似文献
