Summary
Cnemidophorous uniparens, an all-female, parthenogenetic species of whiptail lizard (Teiidae), were housed in the laboratory under seminatural conditions in groups of four, in pairs, or as isolates. Group structure and an animal's position in the dominance hierarchy affect reproductive effort. Housed in pairs, the dominant animals exhibit a higher rate of reproduction, as measured by number of clutches and length of clutch cycle, than do their subordinate cagemates. Females housed with dihydrotestosterone-treated ovariectomized females lay more clutches than females housed with ovariectomized hormone-untreated females, those housed with intact females, or housed alone. 相似文献

The clinical utility of microarray technologies when used in the context of prenatal diagnosis lies in the technology's ability to detect submicroscopic copy number changes that are associated with clinically significant outcomes. We have carried out a systematic review of the literature to calculate the utility of prenatal microarrays in the presence of a normal conventional karyotype. Amongst 12 362 cases in studies that recruited cases from all prenatal ascertainment groups, 295/12 362 (2.4%) overall were reported to have copy number changes with associated clinical significance (pCNC), 201/3090 (6.5%) when ascertained with an abnormal ultrasound, 50/5108 (1.0%) when ascertained because of increased maternal age and 44/4164 (1.1%) for all other ascertainment groups (e.g. parental anxiety and abnormal serum screening result). When additional prenatal microarray studies are included in which ascertainment was restricted to fetuses with abnormal ultrasound scans, 262/3730 (7.0%) were reported to have pCNCs. © 2013 The Authors. Molecular karyotyping using chromosome microarray analysis (CMA) detects more pathogenic chromosomal anomalies than classical karyotyping, making CMA likely to become a first tier test for prenatal diagnosis. Detecting copy number variants of uncertain clinical significance raises ethical considerations. We consider the risk of harm to a woman or her fetus following the detection of a copy number variant of uncertain significance, whether it is ethically justifiable to withhold any test result information from a woman, what constitutes an ‘informed choice’ when women are offered CMA in pregnancy and whether clinicians are morally responsible for ‘unnecessary’ termination of pregnancy. Although we are cognisant of the distress associated with uncertain prenatal results, we argue in favour of the autonomy of women and their right to information from genome-wide CMA in order to make informed choices about their pregnancies. We propose that information material to a woman's decision-making process, including uncertain information, should not be withheld, and that it would be paternalistic for clinicians to try to take responsibility for women's decisions to terminate pregnancies. Non-directive pre-test and post-test genetic counselling is central to the delivery of these ethical objectives. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Predictions from a k-ε model are compared with recently acquired experimental data from inclined negatively buoyant discharges. The k-ε model is part of a standard computational fluid dynamics package (CFX). Two approaches are taken when implementing the model. One involves using an essentially standard form of the model to predict flow behaviour. The other approach involves calibrating the model, through adjustment of the turbulent Schmidt number in the tracer transport equation, to achieve reasonable predictions for positively buoyant vertical discharges and then applying it to inclined negatively buoyant discharges. While the calibrated approach improves the predictions of some bulk parameters (notably the tracer spread and dilution) when compared to predictions from the standard model, the overall effect on the quality of the predictions is small. Comparisons with experimental data indicate that predictions from both the standard and calibrated simulations compare favourably with trajectory data, but integrated dilution predictions at the centreline maximum height are conservative (mean-integrated concentrations are over-predicted). The standard and calibrated k-ε predictions confirm the importance of buoyant instabilities on the lower (inner) side of the flow, the effects of which are clearly evident in the mean concentration profiles. However, these simulations have a tendency to overestimate the influence of stabilizing density gradients on the upper (outer) side of the flow and are unable to effectively predict the cross-sectional distribution of a tracer. In contrast to a previous study, the above comparisons indicate that predictions of bulk parameters from such models can be poor and indeed are no better than those obtained from relatively simple analytical solutions. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: The Umatilla River Basin Fisheries Restoration Plan was initiated in the early 1980s to mitigate salmonid losses caused by hydroelectric development and habitat degradation. The objectives are to enhance the abundance of endemic steelhead and reintroduce extirpated chinook and coho salmon. The project prompted collaborative effort among federal, state, and tribal agencies, and local water users. It has incorporated habitat restoration, flow enhancement, fish passage improvements, and population supplementation through artificial production. Water exchanges have successfully increased minimum flows during spring and fall migration. While flows remain depressed compared to historic conditions, there is potential for improved habitat, passage, and homing. The mean adult‐to‐adult return rate of hatchery‐reared steelhead exceeded replacement and that of the naturally‐spawning population. Although the smolt‐to‐adult survival rates of hatchery‐reared fish fluctuate, salmonid escapement has increased in recent years, permitting steelhead and spring chinook harvest. Enumeration of potential spawners and observed redds reveals an increase in natural production of all supplemented species. Comparison of hatchery‐reared and naturally‐spawning steelhead populations revealed differences in life history characteristics (in age composition and sex ratios) though run timing and genetic stock compositions of the two components of the populations have not differed. Sustained monitoring is needed to determine benefits of integrating habitat restoration and artificial production in restoring salmonid populations. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Data from long‐term ecosystem monitoring and research stations in North America and results of simulations made with interpretive models indicate that changes in climate (precipitation and temperature) can have a significant effect on the quality of surface waters. Changes in water quality during storms, snowmelt, and periods of elevated air temperature or drought can cause conditions that exceed thresholds of ecosystem tolerance and, thus, lead to water‐quality degradation. If warming and changes in available moisture occur, water‐quality changes will likely first occur during episodes of climate‐induced stress, and in ecosystems where the factors controlling water quality are sensitive to climate variability. Continued climate stress would increase the frequency with which ecosystem thresholds are exceeded and thus lead to chronic water‐quality changes. Management strategies in a warmer climate will therefore be needed that are based on local ecological thresholds rather than annual median condition. Changes in land use alter biological, physical, and chemical processes in watersheds and thus significantly alter the quality of adjacent surface waters; these direct human‐caused changes complicate the interpretation of water‐quality changes resulting from changes in climate, and can be both mitigated and exacerbated by climate change. A rigorous strategy for integrated, long‐term monitoring of the ecological and human factors that control water quality is necessary to differentiate between actual and perceived climate effects, and to track the effectiveness of our environmental policies. 相似文献

Discrepancies in grid structure, dynamics and physics packages in the offline coupled NWS/NCEP NAM meteorological model with
the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model can give rise to inconsistencies. This
study investigates the use of three vertical mixing schemes to drive chemistry tracers in the National Air Quality Forecast
Capability (NAQFC). The three schemes evaluated in this study represent various degrees of coupling to improve the commonality
in turbulence parameterization between the meteorological and chemistry models. The methods tested include: (1) using NAM
predicted TKE-based planetary boundary height, h, as the prime parameter to derive CMAQ vertical diffusivity; (2) using the NAM mixed layer depth to determine h and then proceeding as in (1); and (3) using NAM predicted vertical diffusivity directly to parameterize turbulence mixing
within CMAQ. A two week period with elevated surface O3 concentrations during the summer 2006 has been selected to test these schemes in a sensitivity study. The study results are
verified and evaluated using the EPA AIRNow monitoring network and other ozonesonde data. The third method is preferred a
priori as it represents the tightest coupling option studied in this work for turbulent mixing processes between the meteorological
and air quality models. It was found to accurately reproduce the upper bounds of turbulent mixing and provide the best agreement
between predicted h and ozonesonde observed relative humidity profile inferred h for sites investigated in this study. However, this did not translate into the best agreement in surface O3 concentrations. Overall verification results during the test period of two weeks in August 2006, did not show superiority
of this method over the other 2 methods in all regions of the continental U.S. Further efforts in model improvement for the

A sensitivity study is performed to examine the impact of lateral boundary conditions (LBCs) on the NOAA-EPA operational Air
Quality Forecast Guidance over continental USA. We examined six LBCS: the fixed profile LBC, three global LBCs, and two ozonesonde
LBCs for summer 2006. The simulated results from these six runs are compared to IONS ozonesonde and surface ozone measurements
from August 1 to 5, 2006. The choice of LBCs can affect the ozone prediction throughout the domain, and mainly influence the
predictions in upper altitude or near inflow boundaries, such as the US west coast and the northern border. Statistical results
shows that the use of global model predictions for LBCs could improve the correlation coefficients of surface ozone prediction
over the US west coast, but could also increase the ozone mean bias in most regions of the domain depending on global models.
In this study, the use of the MOZART (Model for Ozone And Related chemical Tracers) prediction for CMAQ (Community Multiscale
Air Quality) LBC shows a better surface ozone prediction than that with fixed LBC, especially over the US west coast. The
LBCs derived from ozonesonde measurements yielded better O3 correlations in the upper troposphere. 相似文献

Many reports indicate that the levels of mercury (Hg) contamination of marine fish in other regions are above the United States Food and Drug Administration safe limit (0.5μg/g). No such studies were conducted on fish in the Dutch Caribbean region. Local fish are significant in the diet of the people of Bonaire. Mercury accumulates through the food web and would be expected to be greatest in the top predators. Four species of fish (wahoo, mahi mahi, black fin tuna and barracuda) that are caught for human consumption and occupy top predator positions within the food web were sampled and analyzed for their degree of contamination with Hg. Mercury concentrations were analyzed using semi-quantitative kits and the results verified by a private analytical lab in South Africa. There were no significant differences between the species. Black fin tuna showed the highest Hg concentrations, wahoo and mahi mahi showed lower levels and barracuda the lowest. These levels compare favorably with data published elsewhere. Uncontrolled illegal gold mining in Brazil and Venezuela contaminates ground and river water with Hg. This ultimately reaches the Atlantic where prevailing currents bring it past the Bonaire region. Bonairean fish's Hg levels are not a concern at present, but this may change with time. 相似文献
