Classification and regression problems are a central issue in geosciences. In this paper, we present Classification and Regression Treebagger (ClaReT), a tool for classification and regression based on the random forest (RF) technique. ClaReT is developed in Matlab and has a simple graphic user interface (GUI) that simplifies the model implementation process, allows the standardization of the method, and makes the classification and regression process reproducible. This tool performs automatically the feature selection based on a quantitative criterion and allows testing a large number of explanatory variables. First, it ranks and displays the parameter importance; then, it selects the optimal configuration of explanatory variables; finally, it performs the classification or regression for an entire dataset. It can also provide an evaluation of the results in terms of misclassification error or root mean squared error. We tested the applicability of ClaReT in two case studies. In the first one, we used ClaReT in classification mode to identify the better subset of landslide conditioning variables (LCVs) and to obtain a landslide susceptibility map (LSM) of the Arno river basin (Italy). In the second case study, we used ClaReT in regression mode to produce a soil thickness map of the Terzona catchment, a small sub-basin of the Arno river basin. In both cases, we performed a validation of the results and a comparison with other state-of-the-art techniques. We found that ClaReT produced better results, with a more straightforward and easy application and could be used as a valuable tool to assess the importance of the variables involved in the modeling.  相似文献

Adjoint method is applied to various oil spill problems. A three-dimensional model for describing the dispersion of a quasi-passive substance (a pollutant or a nutrient) and its adjoint model are considered in a limited sea region. Direct and adjoint estimates are used to get dual (equivalent) estimates of the mean concentration of the substance in important zones of the region. The role of dual estimates is illustrated with a few examples. They include such oil spill problems as the search of the most dangerous point of the oil tanker route, the oil dispersion with a climatic velocity, and the dependence of the oil concentration estimates on the oil spill rate. One more example is the application of optimal bioremediation strategy for cleaning a few zones polluted by oil. In this case, instead of oil, the model describes the dispersion of a nutrient released to marine environment. Balanced, unconditionally stable second-order finite-difference schemes based on the splitting method for the solution of the dispersion model and its adjoint are suggested. The main and adjoint difference schemes are compatible in the sense that at every fractional step of the splitting algorithm, the one-dimensional split operators of both schemes satisfy a discrete form of Lagrange identity. In the special unforced and non-dissipative case, each scheme has two conservation laws. Every split one-dimensional problem is solved by Thomas’ factorization method.  相似文献

There is a growing tendency to consider marine reserves as a management and conservation tool. We investigate a spatial bio-economic model to determine fishery profits under conservation efforts. Rather than imposing a marine reserve on our model, we ask, “When and where should a marine reserve be implemented ?” For one-dimensional habitat, we determine conditions under which marine reserves emerge as a part of the optimal policy. Depending upon the size of the habitat, the optimal strategy is either to avoid fishing or to fish at maximum rate. The effect of ocean currents is analyzed through numerical simulations. We find that in the presence of strong currents, a marine reserve may become ineffective. If the currents are at low rate, a marine reserve could emerge as a variable management tool.  相似文献

Vibrio species isolated from four different sampling stations in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia were screened for their antimicrobial resistance and plasmid profiles. A total of 138 isolates belonging to 15 different species were identified. Vibrio campbellii, V. parahaemolyticus, V. harveyi, and V. tubiashii were found to predominance species at all stations. High incidence of erythromycin, ampicillin, and mecillinam resistance was observed among the Vibrio isolates. In contrast, resistance against aztreonam, cefepime, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfonamides was low. All the Vibrio isolates in this study were found to be susceptible to imipenem, norfloxacin, ofloxacin, chloramphenicol, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, and oxytetracycline. Ninety-five percent of the Vibrio isolates were resistant to one or more different classes of antibiotic, and 20 different resistance antibiograms were identified. Thirty-two distinct plasmid profiles with molecular weight ranging from 2.2 to 24.8 kb were detected among the resistance isolates. This study showed that multidrug-resistant Vibrio spp. were common in the aquatic environments of west coast of Peninsular Malaysia.  相似文献

Hyperspectral data can provide prediction of physical and chemical vegetation properties, but data handling, analysis, and interpretation still limit their use. In this study, different methods for selecting variables were compared for the analysis of on-the-ground hyperspectral signatures of wheat grown under a wide range of nitrogen supplies. Spectral signatures were recorded at the end of stem elongation, booting, and heading stages in 100 georeferenced locations, using a 512-channel portable spectroradiometer operating in the 325–1075-nm range. The following procedures were compared: (i) a heuristic combined approach including lambda-lambda R2 (LL R2) model, principal component analysis (PCA), and stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA); (ii) variable importance for projection (VIP) statistics derived from partial least square (PLS) regression (PLS-VIP); and (iii) multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis through maximum R-square improvement (MAXR) and stepwise algorithms. The discriminating capability of selected wavelengths was evaluated by canonical discriminant analysis. Leaf-nitrogen concentration was quantified on samples collected at the same locations and dates and used as response variable in regressive methods. The different methods resulted in differences in the number and position of the selected wavebands. Bands extracted through regressive methods were mostly related to response variable, as shown by the importance of the visible region for PLS and stepwise. Band selection techniques can be extremely useful not only to improve the power of predictive models but also for data interpretation or sensor design.  相似文献

Inactivating pathogens is essential to eradicate waterborne diseases. However, disinfection forms undesirable disinfection by-products (DBPs) in the presence of natural organic matter. Many regulations and guidelines exist to limit DBP exposure for eliminating possible health impacts such as bladder cancer, reproductive effects, and child development effects. In this paper, an index named non-compliance potential (NCP) index is proposed to evaluate regulatory violations by DBPs. The index can serve to evaluate water quality in distribution networks using the Bayesian Belief Network (BBN). BBN is a graphical model to represent contributing variables and their probabilistic relationships. Total trihalomethanes (TTHM), haloacetic acids (HAA5), and free residual chlorine (FRC) are selected as the variables to predict the NCP index. A methodology has been proposed to implement the index using either monitored data, empirical model results (e.g., multiple linear regression), and disinfectant kinetics through EPANET simulations. The index’s usefulness is demonstrated through two case studies on municipal distribution systems using both full-scale monitoring and modeled data. The proposed approach can be implemented for data-sparse conditions, making it especially useful for smaller municipal drinking water systems.  相似文献

The poor operational status of some wastewater treatment plants often result in the discharge of inadequately treated effluent into receiving surface waters. This is of significant public health concern as there are many informal settlement dwellers (ISDs) that rely on these surface waters for their domestic use. This study investigated the treatment efficiency of two independent wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Durban, South Africa and determined the impact of treated effluent discharge on the physicochemical and microbial quality of the receiving water bodies over a 6-month period. Presumptive Escherichia coli isolates were identified using biochemical tests and detection of the mdh gene via PCR. Six major virulence genes namely eae, hly, fliC, stx1, stx2, and rfbE were also detected via PCR while antibiotic resistance profiles of the isolates were determined using Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion assay. The physicochemical parameters of the wastewater samples ranged variously between 9 and 313.33 mg/L, 1.52 and 76.43 NTUs, and 6.30 and 7.87 for COD, turbidity, and pH respectively, while the E. coli counts ranged between 0 and 31.2?×?103 CFU/ml. Of the 200 selected E. coli isolates, the hly gene was found in 28 %, fliC in 20 %, stx2 in 17 %, eae in 14 %, with stx1 and rfbE in only 4 % of the isolates. Notable resistance was observed toward trimethoprim (97 %), tetracycline (56 %), and ampicillin (52.5 %). These results further highlight the poor operational status of these WWTPs and outline the need for improved water quality monitoring and enforcement of stringent guidelines.  相似文献

Freshwater fish move vertically and horizontally through the aquatic landscape for a variety of reasons, such as to find and exploit patchy resources or to locate essential habitats (e.g., for spawning). Inherent challenges exist with the assessment of fish populations because they are moving targets. We submit that quantifying and describing the spatial ecology of fish and their habitat is an important component of freshwater fishery assessment and management. With a growing number of tools available for studying the spatial ecology of fishes (e.g., telemetry, population genetics, hydroacoustics, otolith microchemistry, stable isotope analysis), new knowledge can now be generated and incorporated into biological assessment and fishery management. For example, knowing when, where, and how to deploy assessment gears is essential to inform, refine, or calibrate assessment protocols. Such information is also useful for quantifying or avoiding bycatch of imperiled species. Knowledge of habitat connectivity and usage can identify critically important migration corridors and habitats and can be used to improve our understanding of variables that influence spatial structuring of fish populations. Similarly, demographic processes are partly driven by the behavior of fish and mediated by environmental drivers. Information on these processes is critical to the development and application of realistic population dynamics models. Collectively, biological assessment, when informed by knowledge of spatial ecology, can provide managers with the ability to understand how and when fish and their habitats may be exposed to different threats. Naturally, this knowledge helps to better evaluate or develop strategies to protect the long-term viability of fishery production. Failure to understand the spatial ecology of fishes and to incorporate spatiotemporal data can bias population assessments and forecasts and potentially lead to ineffective or counterproductive management actions.  相似文献
