Adaptation to climate change has been recognized as very important in developing countries that face the greatest threats from global warming. In proposing various adaptation approaches, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change required nations to prepare adaptation plans of action. However, the areas of priority in climate change adaptation have not been considered. This study has developed a new prioritization methodology for climate change adaptation in developing countries. Five categories and 25 approaches in climate change adaptation were adopted through a thorough and detailed analysis of pertinent literature related to the National Adaptation Program of Action (NAPA) in the Gambia. A fuzzy analytic hierarchy process-based questionnaire survey was designed and presented to 12 experts chosen from the committee members of the Gambia’s NAPA. The survey was made to determine the relative importance of the strategies for climate change adaptation. The results indicate that the five most important adaptation categories are health (0.223), forestry (0.213), water (0.210), food (0.181), and energy (0.174), with health as the number one priority in climate change adaptation. Further findings show that the prioritization order of the adaptation approaches to climate change in the Gambia is as follows: “Health education,” “public sensitization,” “water supply infrastructure development,” “microfinance,” and “infrastructure and technology enhancement.”  相似文献

17β-Estradiol (E2) is an endocrine disrupting chemical of harm to both animals and human beings at a low concentration level (ng/L).It cannot be completely removed by wastewater treatments,and is often detected in both environment and drinking waters.The purpose of this feasibility study,towards environmental engineering in the field of water analysis and treatment,was to remove E2 by extraction using non-imprinted polymer (NIP) submicron particles.Experimental results showed that 0.5 mg/L of E2 could be completely extracted by adding 10 mg of NIP particles directly into 10 mL of water.However,the extraction efficiency decreased to 64% for 100 mL of water.prefilling the NIP particles inside a membrane filter showed a potential for water treatment of a large volume,requiring no effort to distribute the particles uniformly in the water.High extraction efficiency (80±10)% for E2 was achieved for 100 mL of water.A total mass of 0.29 mg E2 was extracted from 1000 mL of water containing 0.8 mg/L E2 (by using only 10 mg of NIP particles).Both efficiency and mass capacity can be increased,by scaling up the amount of NIP particles,towards environmental engineering applications.  相似文献

Traditional analyses for PCBs in environmental matrices havefocused on commercial Aroclor mixtures with detection limits inthe 100 to 1000 part per trillion range. This approach hasrecently been supplanted by analyses for specific PCB compoundscalled congeners with detection limits less than 0.5 ppt. At thenational level, total PCB determinations based upon selected PCBcongeners typically characterize analyses of surface water,sediment and tissue. These federal efforts rely on a suite of 18to 20 congeners out of a total of 209 congeners to characterizetotal PCB. The present study compares total PCB estimates basedupon this subset of congeners with estimates based upon anexpanded list of 81 congeners from water, sediment and fishtissue collected from the Delaware Estuary.Analytical data from monitoring programs conducted in theDelaware Estuary by the Delaware River Basin Commission, NOAANational Ocean Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency from 1996 to 1998 were evaluated. Total PCB estimates derived from the different sets of congeners,including the adjustment factor of 2.0 used by NOAA, werecompared. This evaluation indicated that differences existbetween total PCB determinations based upon these approaches, andthat these differences vary depending on the matrix analyzed. The bias associated with using a smaller set of PCB congeners,and the implications for risk assessment are discussed.  相似文献

The presence of iodinated X-ray contrast media (ICM) in source waters is of high concern to public health because of their potential to generate highly toxic disinfection by-products (DBPs). The objective of this study was to determine the impact of ICM in source waters and the type of disinfectant on the overall toxicity of DBP mixtures and to determine which ICM and reaction conditions give rise to toxic by-products. Source waters collected from Akron, OH were treated with five different ICMs, including iopamidol, iopromide, iohexol, diatrizoate and iomeprol, with or without chlorine or chloramine disinfection. The reaction product mixtures were concentrated with XAD resins and the mammalian cell cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of the reaction mixture concentrates was measured. Water containing iopamidol generated an enhanced level of mammalian cell cytotoxicity and genotoxicity after disinfection. While chlorine disinfection with iopamidol resulted in the highest cytotoxicity overall, the relative iopamidol-mediated increase in toxicity was greater when chloramine was used as the disinfectant compared with chlorine. Four other ICMs (iopromide, iohexol, diatrizoate, and iomeprol) expressed some cytotoxicity over the control without any disinfection, and induced higher cytotoxicity when chlorinated. Only iohexol enhanced genotoxicity compared to the chlorinated source water.  相似文献

The adsorption of four volatile organic compounds (1,4-dichloro-benzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, 1,2,2-trichloroethane and 1,1,2,2,-tetrachloroethane) on three soil types from a Superfund site (Petroprocessors Inc) in Baton Rouge, LA was studied with the purpose of obtaining an overall correlation for inclusion in a groundwater transport model being developed for site remediation. The soil-water partition constant, Kd was determined using a standard ASTM procedure (E–1195–87). Using the data for different soil types (fraction organic carbon between 0.11% and 1.13%) and different mineral surface areas (7 to 45 m2/g), the organic carbon contribution (Koc) and the mineral matter contribution (Kmin) to the partition constant were determined. The soils obtained were either from the Pleistocene period or recent shallow deposits at the site. Both log Koc and log Kmin were linearly correlated to log Kow, the octanol-water partition constant. This data provided the basis for obtaining a general correlation for Kd on different soil types at the site. The predicted values were in agreement with that for a composite soil from the same site. The desorption of compounds from the high clay soil after the 24 hour adsorption period was observed to show a biphasic behavior, namely, an easily desorbed fraction and a desorption resistant fraction. The easily desorbed fraction was found to be satisfactorily predicted using the conventional Kd as obtained from the adsorption experiment. The slowly desorbing fraction had a time constant of several weeks. The concentration in the desorption resistant compartment was found to be dependant on the initial amount of contaminant available for adsorption. The aqueous phase concentration in equilibrium with the desorption resistant fraction was found to be 8 g/L for dichlorobenzene and 12 g/L for dichloroethane.  相似文献

It is difficult to quantify the range in source strength reduction (MdR) that may be attainable from in situ remediation of a dense nonaqueous‐phase liquid (DNAPL) site given that available studies typically report only the median MdR without providing insights into site complexity, which is often a governing factor. An empirical study of the performance of in situ remediation at a wide range of DNAPL‐contaminated sites determined MdRs for in situ bioremediation (EISB), in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO), and thermal treatment remedies. Median MdR, geometric mean MdR, and lower/upper 95 percent confidence interval for the mean were: 49x, 105x, 20x/556x, respectively, for EISB; 9x, 21x, and 4x/110x for ISCO; and 19x, 31x, and 6x/150x for thermal treatment. Lower MdR values were determined for large, complex sites and for sites with DNAPL pool‐dominated source zones. A feasibility analysis of partial DNAPL depletion is described for a pool‐dominated source zone. Back‐diffusion from low‐hydraulic conductivity units within a pool‐dominated source zone is shown to potentially sustain a secondary source for more than 1,000 years, indicating that aggressive source treatment may not reduce the remediation timeframe. Estimated plume response demonstrates there may be no reduction in cost associated with aggressive treatment, and little difference in risk reduction associated with the various alternatives. Monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for the source zone is shown to be a reasonable alternative for the pool‐dominated source zone considered in this example. It is demonstrated that pool‐dominated source zones with a large range in initial DNAPL mass (250 to 1,500 kg) may correspond to a narrow range in source strength (20 to 30 kg/year). This demonstrates that measured source strength is nonunique with respect to DNAPL mass in the subsurface and, thus, source strength should not be used as the sole basis for predicting how much DNAPL mass remains or must be removed to achieve a target goal. If aggressive source zone treatment is to be implemented due to regulatory requirements, strategic pump‐and‐treat is shown to be most cost effective. These remedial decisions are shown to be insensitive to a range of possible DNAPL pool conditions. At sites with an existing pump‐and‐treat system, a significant increase in mass removal and source strength reduction may be achieved for a low incremental cost by strategic placement of extraction wells and pumping rate selection. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

Increasing volumes of treated and untreated human sewage discharged into rivers around the world are likely to be leading to high aquatic concentrations of toxic, unionized ammonia (NH3), with negative impacts on species and ecosystems. Tools and approaches are needed for assessing the dynamics of NH3. This paper describes a modeling approach for first-order assessment of potential NH3 toxicity in urban rivers. In this study daily dissolved NH3 concentrations in the Rio Grande of central New Mexico, USA, at the city of Albuquerque's treated sewage outfall were modeled for 1989-2002. Data for ammonium (NH4+) concentrations in the sewage and data for discharge, temperature, and pH for both sewage effluent and the river were used. We used State of New Mexico acute and chronic NH3- N concentration values (0.30 and 0.05 mg/L NH3-N, respectively) and other reported standards as benchmarks for determining NH3 toxicity in the river and for assessing potential impact on population dynamics for fish species. A critical species of concern is the Rio Grande silvery minnow (Hybognathus amarus), an endangered species in the river near Albuquerque. Results show that NH3 concentrations matched or exceeded acute levels 13%, 3%, and 4% of the time in 1989, 1991, and 1992, respectively. Modeled NH3 concentrations matched or exceeded chronic values 97%, 74%, 78%, and 11% of the time in 1989, 1991, 1992, and 1997, respectively. Exceedences ranged from 0% to 1% in later years after enhancements to the wastewater treatment plant. Modeled NH3 concentrations may differ from actual concentrations because of NH3 and NH4+ loss terms and additive terms such as mixing processes, volatilization, nitrification, sorbtion, and NH4+ uptake. We conclude that NH3 toxicity must be considered seriously for its potential ecological impacts on the Rio Grande and as a mechanism contributing to the decline of the Rio Grande fish community in general and the Rio Grande silvery minnow specifically. Conclusions drawn for the Rio Grande suggest that NH3 concentrations may be high in rivers around the world where alkaline pH values are prevalent and sewage treatment capabilities are poorly developed or absent.  相似文献
