In a recent study, Denny et al. (2004a) showed that queens of the army ant, Eciton burchellii, mate with multiple males and presented estimates suggesting that they mate with more males than queens of any other ant species so far investigated. They also inferred that data were consistent with queens being inseminated repeatedly throughout their life, which would be exceptional among the social Hymenoptera and contradictory to predictions from kin selection theory. In the present study, we reanalyze these data using new software and supplement them with similar microsatellite data from other colonies of the same species. Mating frequencies in E. burchellii are indeed very high (mean observed and effective queen-mating frequencies of 12.9 each) but considerably lower than the previous estimates. We show that the number of patrilines represented in the first worker offspring of a young queen is lower than in older queens but suggest that this may be due to initial sperm clumping in the queen’s sperm storage organ, rather than to repeated inseminations. Moreover, we found no evidence for repeated mating by genotyping sequential worker generations produced by a single old queen, showing that she did not obtain new inseminations despite ample opportunities for mating. 相似文献

Lead contamination in the City of Flint, MI has been well documented over the past two years, with lead levels above the EPA Action Level until summer 2016. This resulted from an ill-fated decision to switch from Detroit water (Lake Huron) with corrosion control, to Flint River water without corrosion control. Although lead levels are now closer to normal, reports of skin rashes have sparked questions surrounding tap water in some Flint homes. This study investigated the presence of contaminants, including disinfection by-products (DBPs), in the hot tap water used for showering in the homes of residents in Flint. Extensive quantitative analysis of 61 regulated and priority unregulated DBPs was conducted in Flint hot and cold tap water, along with the analysis of 50 volatile organic compounds and a nontarget comprehensive, broadscreen analysis, to identify a possible source for the reported skin rashes. For comparison, chlorinated hot and cold waters from three other cities were also sampled, including Detroit, which also uses Lake Huron as its source water. Results showed that hot water samples generally contained elevated levels of regulated and priority unregulated DBPs compared to cold water samples, but trihalomethanes were still within regulatory limits. Overall, hot shower water from Flint was similar to waters sampled from the three other cities and did not have unusually high levels of DBPs or other organic chemicals that could be responsible for the skin rashes observed by residents. This paper compares the results of a survey of plasma creatine kinase (CK) activity measured in fetuses at-risk for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) with a reliable control series. Only pure fetal blood samples obtained by fetoscopy at between 17–24 weeks gestational age were used. Of the at-risk group 19 male pregnancies, mostly at low risk for DMD, proceeded to term with a normal outcome; there was no significant difference between their fetal plasma CK activities and the control group. Another 21 male pregnancies were terminated. This group included the highest risk mothers and hence was expected to contain a significant proportion of affected fetuses. The fetal plasma CK activity range was overlapping but significantly higher than the control group. No grossly elevated CK value was obtained. We conclude that, on average, DMD fetuses at this gestational age have higher plasma CK activity than controls. The problems of applying this finding to the prenatal diagnosis of DMD are discussed. 相似文献

For some time the price response of the supply of wastepaper has been analyzed in terms of either static simultaneous equation models, or by the use of fairly ad hoc distributed lag models. This paper suggests that a model based on the price expectations of wastepaper suppliers is capable of explaining certain anomalies in earlier empirical work, and confirms the view that purely price-based policies to stimulate wastepaper recycling are likely to be ineffective. Not only is the supply of wastepaper insensitive to changes in price expectations, but the latter are themselves very slow to adjust to changes in actual prices. 相似文献

The capability of satellite and airborne remote-sensing methods for mapping Caribbean coral reefs is evaluated. Reef habitats
were categorised into coarse, intermediate and fine detail, using hierarchical classification of field data (percent cover
in 1 m quadrats and seagrass standing-crop). Habitats were defined as assemblages of benthic macro-organisms and substrata
and were mapped using the satellite sensors Landsat MSS, Landsat TM, SPOT XS, SPOT Pan and merged Landsat TM/SPOT Pan. Habitats
were also mapped using the high-resolution digital airborne sensor, CASI (compact airborne spectrographic imager). To map
areas >60 km in any direction with coarse detail, Landsat TM was the most accurate and cost-effective satellite sensor (SPOT
XS when <60 km). For maps with intermediate habitat detail, aerial photography (from a comparable study in Anguilla) exhibited
similar accuracy to Landsat TM, SPOT XS, SPOT Pan and merged Landsat TM/SPOT Pan. Landsat MSS was consistently the least accurate
sensor. Maps from CASI were significantly (p<0.001) more accurate than satellite sensors and aerial photographs. Maps with detailed habitat information (i.e. >9 reef
classes) had a maximum accuracy of 37% when based on satellite imagery, but aerial photography and CASI achieved accuracies
of 67 and 81%, respectively. Commissioning of new aerial photography does not appear to be a cost-effective option; satellites
are cheaper for coarse habitat-mapping, and detailed habitat-mapping can be conducted more accurately and cheaply with CASI.
The results will guide practitioners in matching survey objectives to appropriate remote-sensing methods.

Based on direct monitoring of feeding and growth under field conditions and frequent measurements of respiration and energy content in the laboratory, annual energy budgets were derived for Polinices duplicatus feeding on Mya arenaria at Barnstable Harbor, Massachusetts. The gross growth efficiency (Pg/C) of P. duplicatus was high (35%) and varied inversely with snail size. The proportion of ingested energy expended on respiration (R/C) was modest (44%) and varied directly with snail size and inversely with temperature. The energetic efficiencies of P. duplicatus agreed with the few results available for othe predatory molluscs and differed from most results available for herbivorous and detritivorous molluscs. 相似文献

Tropical forests are experiencing enormous threats from deforestation and habitat degradation. Much knowledge of the impacts of these land-use changes on tropical species comes from studies examining patterns of richness and abundance. Demographic vital rates (survival, reproduction, and movement) can also be affected by land-use change in a way that increases species vulnerability to extirpation, but in many cases these impacts may not be manifested in short-term changes in abundance or species richness. We conducted a literature review to assess current knowledge and research effort concerning how land-use change affects species vital rates in tropical forest vertebrates. We found a general paucity of empirical research on demography across taxa and regions, with some biases toward mammals and birds and land-use transitions, including fragmentation and agriculture. There is also considerable between-species variation in demographic responses to land-use change, which could reflect trait-based differences in species sensitivity, complex context dependencies (e.g., between-region variation), or inconsistency in methods used in studies. Efforts to improve understanding of anthropogenic impacts on species demography are underway, but there is a need for increased research effort to fill knowledge gaps in understudied tropical regions and taxa. The lack of information on demographic impacts of anthropogenic disturbance makes it difficult to draw definite conclusions about the magnitude of threats to tropical ecosystems under anthropogenic pressures. Relatively little is known about how the life histories of perennial forb species, and especially their lifetime patterns of growth, vary across environmental gradients. We used a post hoc approach (herb-chronology) to determine plant age and previous growth (width of successive annual rings in roots) in three species of perennial forb (two long-lived species [Penstemon venustus, Lupinus laxiflorus] and one short-lived [Rudbeckia occidentalis]) along a 1000-m altitudinal gradient in the Wallowa Mountains (northeast Oregon, USA). Plants from the highest altitude tended to be considerably older and produced up to five times as many flowering shoots as lowland plants. In addition, mean ring widths of high-altitude plants were about half those of lowland plants. In plants from low and intermediate altitudes, ring width either decreased linearly or varied inconsistently during the life of the plant. In contrast, ring widths of high-altitude plants increased at first and later decreased, resulting in curvilinear growth trajectories that were highly consistent among species. Together, these data for three ecologically distinct forb species provide evidence of a consistent shift toward more conservative and strongly constrained life histories at higher altitudes. More generally, the results indicate the possible importance of changes in selection pressures across strong environmental gradients on life history strategies within a single species. 相似文献

The migration capacity of red-tide species in the natural environment was studied at a station in the Ría de Vigo (Rías Bajas, NW Spain) over a 24 h period in September 1991. The Ría de Vigo, where red tides are frequent, normally shows a positive estuarine circulation and is subjected to seasonal upwelling and downwelling phenomena. A marked diel pattern was observed for five species that are capable of causing red tides (Ceratium furca, Scrippsiella trochoidea, Dinophysis acuminata, Mesodinium rubrum, and Eutreptiella sp.). Such diel behaviour could be clearly advantageous in a stratified environment where light and nutrients are often in two separate layers. Active movement enables species such as dinoflagellates and some ciliates to exploit high levels of irradiance at the surface during the day and to take up nutrients in deeper layers at night. Patchy distribution of phytoplankton, shear-induced horizontal dispersion and density variations were considered, but none of them accounted for the vertical changes observed. Vertical migration is thought to be one of the mechanisms that could promote blooms in nutrient-depleted surface layers. 相似文献

The Mediterranean region plays host to ca. 33% of the world’s tourism industry. This population of visitors (ca. 147 million
in 1990) inevitably exerts an enormous impact on the natural resources of this coastal zone. In May 1997, a new generation
Aerial Digital Photographic System [ADPS] configured with a Kodak Digital Science 460 CIR digital camera was used to acquire
colour infrared digital photographs of the sand dune systems along the Mediterranean coast of France, from Le Barcares to
St-Cyprien-Plage. These have been used to assess the condition of the dunes along this coast. A series of simple analytical
techniques to identify and measure features indicative of public pressure using image processing software has been devised.
The dune manager with basic computer skills can analyse such indicators as path length, vegetation cover (and conversely the
extent of bare sand) to enable monitoring of the performance of their dune systems under particular management regimes. These
photographs have been compared with similar digital photographs of dune sites in SW France to allow a comparison of dune degradation
in a region with a different population pressure and climate regime. Dune systems sampled from the Mediterranean coastal zone
showed more evidence of anthropogenically induced change than those sampled in SW France. 相似文献
