The influence of macrofauna on estuarine benthic community metabolism: a microcosm study 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Effects of benthic macrofauna (Corophium volutator, Hydrobia sp., Nereis virens) on benthic community metabolism were studied over a 65-d period in microcosms kept in either light/dark cycle (L/D-system) or in continuous darkness (D-system). Sediment and animals were collected in January 1986 in the shallow mesohaline estuary, Norsminde Fjord, Denmark. The primary production in the L/D-system after 10 d acted as a stabilizing agent on the O2 and CO2 flux rates, whereas the D-system showed decreasing O2 and CO2 flux throughout the period. Mean O2 uptake over the experimental period ranged from 0.38 to 1.24 mmol m–2 h–1 and CO2 release varied from 0.80 to 1.63 mmol m–2 h–1 in both systems. The presence of macrofauna stimulated community respiration rates measured in darknes, 1.4 to 3.0 and 0.9 to 2.0 times for O2 and CO2, respectively. In contrast, macrofauna lowered primary production. Gross primary production varied from 1.06 to 2.26 mmol O2 m–2 h–1 and from 1.26 to 2.62 mmol CO2 m–2 h–1. The community respiratory quotient (CRQ, CO2/O2) was generally higher in the begining of the experiment (0–20 d, mean 1.89) than in the period from Days 20 to 65 (mean 1.38). The L/D-system exhibited lower CRQ (ca. 1) than the D-system. The community photosynthetic quotient varied for both net and gross primary production from 0.64 to 1.03, mean 0.81. The heterotrophic D-system revealed a sharp decrease in the sediment content of chlorophyll a as compared to the initial content. In the autotrophic L/D-system, a significant increase in chlorophyll a concentration was observed in cores lacking animals and cores with C. volutator (The latter species died during the experiment). Due to grazing and other macrofauna activities other cores of the L/D-system exhibited no significant change in chlorophyll a concentration. Community primary production was linearly correlated to the chlorophyll a content in the 0 to 0.5 cm layer. Fluxes of DIN (NH4
++NO2
–+NO3
–) did not reveal significant temporal changes during the experiment. Highest rates were found for the cores containing animals, mainly because of an increased NH4
+ flux. The release of DIN decreased significantly due to uptake by benthic microalgae in the L/D-system. No effects of the added macrofauna were found on particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), total carbon dioxide (TCO2) and NH4
+ in the sediment. The ratio between POC and PON was nearly constant (9.69) in all sediment dephts. The relationship between TCO2 and NH4

Summary. Sequestration of plant toxins in herbivores is often
correlated with aposematic coloration and gregarious behaviour. Larvae
of Pieris brassicae show these conspicuous morphological and behavioural
characteristics and were thus suggested to sequester glucosinolates that
are characteristic secondary metabolites of their host plants. P. rapaeare camouflaged and solitary, and are thus not expected to sequester. To
test this hypothesis and to check the repeatabi-lity of a study that did
report the presence of the glucosinolate sinigrin in P. brassicae,
larvae were reared on three species of Brassicaceae (Sinapis alba,
Brassica nigra and Barbarea stricta), and different leaf and insect
samples were taken for glucosinolate analysis. The major host plant
glucosinolates could only be found in traces or not at all in larval
haemolymph, bled or starved larvae, faeces or pupae of both species or
P. brassicae regurgitant. Haemolymph of both Pieris spp. was not
rejected by the ant Myrmica rubra in dual-choice assays; the regurgitant
of P. brassicae was rejected. This suggests the presence of compounds
other than glucosinolates that might be sequestered in or produced by P.
brassicae only. In faeces of both Pieris spp. a compound which yielded
4-hydroxybenzylcyanide (HBC) upon incubation with sulfatase was detected
in high concentrations when larvae had been reared on S. alba. This
compound may be derived from hydrolysis of sinalbin, the main
glucosinolate of that plant. The unidentified HBC progenitor was
apparently not sequestered in the two Pieris spp., and was not detected
in faeces of larvae reared on B. nigra or B. stricta.

Summary Female dance-flies, Empis borealis L., gather to swarm, and males carrying nuptial gifts visit swarms for mating. Field observations and experiments were performed on this behaviorally sex-role reversed species to test models of lekking behavior. The key predictions were: (1) female preference model: male visiting rate and mating rate should increase with the number of females in swarm (swarm size), (2) hotspot model: male visiting rate should be independent of swarm size, and (3) hotshot model: swarm size should be positively correlated with the body size of the largest female in swarm. We found that male visiting rate and mating rate increased with swarm size, and that mating rate per female increased with swarm size. Males also mated more often in larger swarms than in smaller ones. Both males and females visited swarm sites even in the absence of other individuals. When females were successively removed from swarm sites more males than females on average arrived at these sites: 2.25 males per female. When no individuals were present at the swarm site, arriving males moved on to another site, whereas arriving females generally stayed. Larger experimental swarm-markers attracted both more males and more females and even more males when swarming females were present. There was no correlation between mean or median female size in swarms and the number of females in swarms. Thus, the female preference model and the hotspot model were corroborated, while other models were judged unlikely to explain swarming behavior in E. borealis.

Imprinting plays a key role in the development of species recognition, with young imprinting upon the morphological characters
of their parents. However, the potential role that cultural transmission might play in species recognition remains largely
uninvestigated. Great tits (Parus major) and blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) do not normally perceive each other as sexual competitors or potential partners. However, after reciprocal interspecific
cross-fostering, both species may perceive individuals of the foster species as potential rivals or mates. Although the experience
of being raised by heterospecifics clearly has affected the species recognition of cross-fostered birds, some of them breed
naturally with conspecifics. The offspring of such cross-fostered birds (OCF) are hence raised by parents that look like ordinary
conspecifics but display deviant species recognition as compared to controls in terms of aggressive response towards rivals.
Comparing the aggressive behavior of OCF, cross-fostered birds and controls towards territorial intruders may thus help tease
apart the influence of morphological vs behavioral cues of parents in the development of offspring species recognition. To
this end, we compared birds from all three treatments with respect to their aggressive response to territorial intruders of
both species during the breeding season. OCF and controls did not differ in their pattern of response towards heterospecific
and conspecific stimuli. Compared to cross-fostered birds, OCF and controls showed less aggression towards heterospecific
intruders, while the response towards conspecific intruders did not differ between treatments. These results demonstrate that
both tit species imprint on the morphological characters of their parents, but that parental behavior is not important for

Of 2882 women allocated to either transabdominal CVS (TA) or transcervical CVS (TC) at two large obstetric centres in Denmark, 2707 had blood samples drawn before and 30 min after CVS for maternal serum-alpha-fetoprotein (MSAFP) measurement. 2535 of these women had cytogenetically normal pregnancies and 2091 of them went on to have samples drawn at the 18–20 week follow-up. Post-procedure MSAFP values were correlated to the biopsy method used, with mean MSAFP values significantly higher after TA than TC, 33 and 15 kU/l, respectively (P<0·001). Following TA procedures, 18 per cent of cases had feto-maternal transfusion higher than 0·1 ml; this occurred in only 5 per cent of TC cases. MSAFP levels were associated with spontaneous fetal loss in the TA group but not in the TC group. TC, however, was followed by more losses than TA. The post-CVS MSAFP value was positively correlated with the amount of villi aspirated. The difference in post-procedure elevation in MSAFP 30 min later (average 18 kU/l higher for TA than for TC) was not reflected in raised levels at the 18–20 week follow-up. Study medians at mid-trimester did not differ from reference group medians established from a group of singleton pregnancies with sonographically determined gestational age who did not experience invasive procedures and delivered normal infants. Our findings suggest that CVS does not compromise mid-trimester MSAFP for screening for neural tube defects (NTDs). Most of the Swedish coastal fisheries are not sustainable from either a social, economic or ecological point of view. We propose the introduction of local fisheries management (LFM) as a tool for restructuring the present large-scale management system in order to achieve sustainability. To implement LFM two questions need to be answered: How to distribute the resource fish among different resource user groups? How to restructure present fisheries management to meet the criteria of sustainability? Starting from these questions we describe possible forms of LFM for Swedish coastal fishery supported by recent research. The biological and social preconditions for restructuring fisheries management are derived from an analysis of the ecological and managerial situation in Swedish fishery. Three types of LFM--owner based, user based, and community based management--are analyzed with regard to the tasks to be carried outin LFM, the roles of management groups, and the definition and optimal size of management areas. 相似文献

Toxicity of methyl tert-butyl ether to marine organisms: ambient water quality criteria calculation 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In response to increasing concerns over the detection of methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in groundwater and surface water and its potential effects in aquatic ecosystems, industry and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) began to collaborate in 1997 to develop aquatic toxicity databases sufficient to derive ambient water quality criteria for MTBE consistent with USEPA requirements. Acute toxicity data for seven marine species, chronic toxicity data for an invertebrate, and plant toxicity data were developed to complete the saltwater database. The species tested were Cyprinodon variegatus, Gasterosteus aculeatus, Callinectes sapidus, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Palaemonetes pugio, Rhepoxynius abronius, Americamysis bahia, and Skeletonema costatum. The toxicity tests were conducted in accordance with USEPA and American Society for Testing and Materials testing procedures and Good Laboratory Practice guidelines. Data developed from this study were consistent with existing data and showed that MTBE has low acute and chronic toxicity to the marine species tested. Based upon measured MTBE concentrations, acute effects were found to range from 166 mg MTBE/l for the grass shrimp to 1950 mg MTBE/l for marine mussel. The no-observed effect concentration for the reproduction and growth of mysids was 26 mg MTBE/l during the life cycle test. The toxicity of MTBE to saltwater organisms is comparable to its toxicity to the freshwater species tested. To study the biological variation in the content of some persistent organic pollutants, viz hexachlorobenzene (HCB), alpha- and gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (alpha- and gamma-HCH), and 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis-(4-chlorophenyl)-ethane (DDT) were analysed in needles from Scots pine trees growing at an isolated peninsula south of Stockholm, Sweden. The concentration variations of each compound was evaluated by a nested analysis of variance (ANOVA) with sampling site specific compass direction, individual tree, and sampling height as factors. Two pair-wise post hoc tests were used to test significant results from the ANOVA. The hexachlorocyclohexanes showed no significant differences between sampling site, trees or sampling height. DDT concentration was significantly lower at the sampling site with the densest vegetation compared to at least three of the other sampling sites. HCB was significantly lower at the lowest sampling height (0.5 m). 相似文献
