Environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in road construction 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Vargon Alloys in Western Sweden is one of the largest producers of ferrochrome slag in Europe. Ferrochrome slag is a by-product from the production of ferrochrome, an essential component in stainless steel. Extensive tests have been carried out on the physical properties of the ferrochrome slag from Vargon Alloys and it was found to be highly suitable as road construction material. The composition and leaching tests of the ferrochrome slag show that the chromium content is high, 1-3%, although leaching under normal conditions is very low. With the exception of potassium (K), which had a potential leaching capacity (availability test) of around 16%, the leaching of chromium, nickel, zinc and other elements was just a few per cent. However, all these tests were conducted in the laboratory. What happens out in the field, under the influence of acid rain and biological activity, and how does this compare with the laboratory results? To answer this question an investigation was carried out to study the environmental impact of ferrochrome slag in roads that were built in 1994. The investigation includes soil sampling (total content and leachable amounts of metals) and groundwater analysis (filtered and non-filtered samples). In addition, a new method involving the bio-uptake of chromium and other metals by the roots of the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) was tested. The results show that there was a low migration of particles from the slag to the underlying soil and that the leaching into the groundwater was also low for all the elements analysed. However, there seemed to be a significant uptake of Cr by plants growing with their roots in the slag. An investigation of plant uptake was an important complement to laboratory leaching tests on alternative materials. 相似文献

Pollutant fluxes from municipal solid waste (MSW) incinerators are of a certain concern, especially gaseous emissions from the stack, which constitute the major effluent from the plant. In this work, heavy metals in soil and vegetation sampled in different sites around the plant are compared with those found in the gaseous emissions from an incinerator: the suspected source and environmental matrices are observed together, in order to detect a possible relationship of cause and effect, using statistical methods. The incinerator examined, regarding dimension and technology, can be considered a typical Italian one. Heavy metal concentrations in soil and vegetation show a clear dependence on sampling year; similar behaviour can be found in emission fluxes referring to the same years. A dependence on the distance from the incinerator is also apparent. This study supplies a methodological approach that can be easily extended and applied to other suspected contamination sources. 相似文献

In this work the development of a process for the recovery of copper from contaminated industrial soils is presented. Experimental tests on a standard soil contaminated with a solution of copper chloride were carried out. The metal was extracted from the contaminated soil by flushing with a 0.1 M aqueous solution of an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) sodium salt. A maximum copper extraction efficiency of about 60% was observed. Copper was then separated from the extracted solution by precipitation with sodium hydroxide after addition of ferric sulfate. 相似文献

Improvement of mechanical properties of recycled mixed plastic waste is one of the fundamental goals in any recycling process. However, polymer immiscibility makes the development of any effective reprocessing method difficult. In this work, a polymer milling process with liquid CO2 was applied to polymeric mixed waste, obtaining a powder material which was successfully utilized as a matrix for a new composite material. Developed materials have interesting mechanical properties and material performance can easily be improved. Investigations on selected mixtures of PP and PE clearly showed evidence of chemical compatibilization. 相似文献

Building waste recycling as aggregates is a modern approach for preventing environmental pollution through both reducing the stocks of waste and decreasing the use of natural aggregates. The reuse of building waste is a relatively new issue for Bulgaria despite the existing considerable quantity of building waste and the significant changes in the environmental rules applied. The paper discusses generated and potential waste streams in Bulgaria in the context of the social and economic restructuring and recent urban development undergone by the country. The main preliminary conditions for developing the recycling activity such as: streams of building waste, experience in recycling, technical and environmental standardization, appropriate technologies, etc. are examined. The authors analyze current practice and research activities with regard to the implementation of advanced EU building-waste recycling methods. The chemical and material composition of MSWI bottom ash depends on the particle size; this suggests that the mechanisms and kinetics of natural weathering are also a function of particle size. This paper reports the effects of short-term natural weathering on the leaching of heavy metals (mainly Pb, Cu and Zn) from MSWI bottom ash. Initial concentrations of heavy metals were higher for the smallest particle size fractions, but these levels fell dramatically during the first 50 days of weathering before levelling off. The main differences between size fractions were in the pH and the solubility of calcium and aluminium. For the initial stages of weathering and small size fractions, portlandite solubility seemed to control the pH. In contrast, for fractions bigger than 6 mm, the formation of ettringite was the reaction controlling the pH and the solubility of sulphates, aluminium and calcium. 相似文献

With the aim of knowing the concentration and distribution of essential and nonessential metals in selected tissues of whales, analysis of Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn were carried out in kidney, liver and muscle of the gray whale Eschrichtius robustus and the sperm whale Physeter catodon. Whales were found stranded in the southeast Gulf of California. Individuals were in a juvenile stage; mean length of whales was 9.3 m for E. robustus and 7 m for P. catodon. Sequence of metal concentrations was Fe>Zn>Cu>Mn>Cd>Pb in E. robustus, and Fe>Zn>Cu>Cd>Mn>Pb in P. catodon. In E. robustus, highest concentrations of Cu, Mn, Pb and Zn (17.2, 19.6, 0.9 and 388 microg g(-1), respectively) were measured in liver, Cd (5.7 microg g(-1)) in kidney and Fe (1009 microg g(-1)) in muscle. In P. catodon, the highest levels of Cu, Fe and Pb (48.6, 5200 and 4.2 microg g(-1), respectively) were found in liver, Cd and Zn (94 and 183 microg g(-1)) in kidney and Mn (8 microg g(-1)) in muscle. Ecologists still have to elucidate the complex feedback interactions operating among biodiversity and ecosystem processes in engineered systems. To address this, a field experiment was conducted to mimic natural mussel bed meta-ecosystems (Mytilus spp.) of the lower St. Lawrence Estuary (Quebec, Canada) and partition the effects of their biotic and abiotic properties and spatial structure on ecosystem processes and community dynamics of associated macro-invertebrates. We found positive intraspecific feedbacks between mussels and their recruits, and negative interspecific feedbacks between mussels and their associated ecosystem. These feedbacks were associated with mussel bed ecosystem processes (fluxes of ammonium and oxygen). In addition, we showed that proximity between mussel patches increased within-patch nutrient fluxes. Our study revealed the potential for meta-ecosystem engineering to drive feedback interactions between community and ecosystem functioning in marine fragmented systems. It also shows the relevance of meta-ecosystem theories as a conceptual framework to elucidate biotic and abiotic processes controlling ecosystem and community structure. Such framework could contribute to ecosystem-based management of spatially structured systems such as reserve networks and fragmented ecosystems. 相似文献

Golestan province in north Iran is known to be a high-risk area for esophageal cancer (EC). Of a long list of multiple risk
factors, this study focuses on a possible link between the epidemiologic patterns of EC and the anomalous concentration of
some ions and elements in the drinking water sources. A total of 183 samples from 45 villages covering a wide range of EC
mortality rates are collected and analyzed. The results demonstrate that NO3
−, SO4
2−, Sb, and Sr exceed the recommended maximum concentration level (MCL) in drinking water. This is more prominent in the villages
with high esophageal cancer mortality rate, suggesting a possible link between EC incidence and water quality. Se concentration
in drinking water increases from low to the high EC areas, a finding contrary to the expected trend. It is concluded that
Se deficiency does not play a major role in the etiology of EC in the Golestan province. The statistical results obtained
from Mann–Whitney and Kruskal–Wallis tests along with cluster analysis are consistent with the observed trend of EC mortality
