Recent expansion within the oil sands industry of the Athabasca Basin of Alberta, Canada has led to increased concern regarding process-affected wastewaters produced during bitumen extraction. Naphthenic acids (NAs) have been identified as the primary toxic constituents of oil sands process-affected waters (OSPW) and studies have shown that with time, microbial degradation of lower molecular weight NAs has led to a decrease in observed toxicity. As earlier studies identified the need for an "unequivocal demonstration" of lower molecular weight NAs being the primary contributors to mixture toxicity, a study was initiated to fractionate an extracted NA mixture by molecular weight and to assess each fraction's toxicity. Successful molecular weight fractionation of a methylated NA mixture was achieved using a Kugelrohr distillation apparatus, in which fractions collected at higher boiling points contained NAs with greater total carbon content as well as greater degree of cyclicity. Assays with Vibrio fischeri bioluminescence (via Microtox assay) revealed that the lowest molecular weight NAs collected had higher potency (EC50: 41.9+/-2.8 mg l(-1)) than the highest molecular weight NAs collected (EC50: 64.9+/-7.4 mg l(-1)). Although these results support field observations of microbial degradation of low molecular weight NAs decreasing OSPW toxicity, it is not clear why larger NAs, given their greater hydrophobicity, would be less toxic.  相似文献

This study estimated the potential effects of pesticide drift on terrestrial ecosystems outside target areas, for the Dutch situation. A series of field trials was conducted to estimate the effects of drift on different species groups at different distances from a treated plot for different categories of pesticide: herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Measurements of the pesticide drift deposition resulting from standard agricultural practice were used to model deposition outside the treated area. These data were then combined with national statistics on cropland and pesticide use to assess the ecological effects of pesticide drift for the Netherlands as a whole. Three scenarios were considered: the recent past (1998), the present (2005) and an optimised scenario based on 'best available practice' (2010). In the recent past the impact of herbicide drift on sensitive life stages non-target vascular plants is estimated to have exceeded the 50% effect level on 59% of adjacent linear landscape elements such as ditch banks and hedgerows. For the impact of insecticides and fungicides on non-target insects and fungi this 50% effect figure was 29% and 28% of linear elements, respectively. In the present situation, with (narrow) unsprayed buffer zones and other measures in place, these percentages are down to 41% for herbicides, 21% for insecticides and 14% for fungicides. In the optimised scenario, with a greater buffer width of 2.25m for potatoes (compared to 1.50m in 2005) and 1m for other crops (compared to 0.25 and 0.5m in 2005) and 'best available practice', these percentages can be cut to zero. In natural areas located within farming regions the 10% effect level can be reduced from 31% of such areas (1998) to 0% under conditions of 'best available practice'.  相似文献

Recently there has been considerable concern about declines in bee communities in agricultural and natural habitats. The value of pollination to agriculture, provided primarily by bees, is >$200 billion/year worldwide, and in natural ecosystems it is thought to be even greater. However, no monitoring program exists to accurately detect declines in abundance of insect pollinators; thus, it is difficult to quantify the status of bee communities or estimate the extent of declines. We used data from 11 multiyear studies of bee communities to devise a program to monitor pollinators at regional, national, or international scales. In these studies, 7 different methods for sampling bees were used and bees were sampled on 3 different continents. We estimated that a monitoring program with 200–250 sampling locations each sampled twice over 5 years would provide sufficient power to detect small (2–5%) annual declines in the number of species and in total abundance and would cost U.S.$2,000,000. To detect declines as small as 1% annually over the same period would require >300 sampling locations. Given the role of pollinators in food security and ecosystem function, we recommend establishment of integrated regional and international monitoring programs to detect changes in pollinator communities. Surface and subsurface soil samples contaminated with crude oils were collected from an impacted site at Bodo City in the Niger Delta, Nigeria, after a field reconnaissance survey. An uncontaminated soil sample collected 100 m from the impacted site, but within the same geographical area, was used as a control. Trace elements such as, As, Cu, Cr, Cd, Fe, Pb, Ba, Ni, V, Hg and cation-exchange capacity constituents of the contaminated and uncontaminated soils were determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Trace element concentrations were: Cu, 0.5–13.4 mg kg? 1; Cr, 0.2–0.8 mg kg? 1; Fe, 6.2–8.7 mg kg? 1; Ba 80.0–108.0 mg kg? 1; Ni, 0.6–4.8 mg kg? 1; and V, 4.0–9.4 mg kg? 1; cation-exchange capacity ranged from 43.6 to 57.2 mg kg? 1 in surface and subsurface soils. Results showed that eigenvalues for the two first principal components represent up to 49% of the total variance. A positive correlation of the first principal component with Cu, Cr and cation-exchange capacity shows pollution from oil spillage, while a positive correlation of the second principal component with Cr, Fe, V, and dissolved oxygen (DO) shows both oil pollution and allochthonous inputs.  相似文献

The effect of the spin-trap α-phenyl-N-t-butylnitrone (PBN) on the formation of fatty acid dimers induced by the anoxic microsomal metabolism of tetrachloromethane was investigated in vitro, in particular, with respect to cross-linking of arachidonic acid with a second one (C20–C20) and of arachidonic acid with docosahexaenoic acid (C20–C22). PBN exerted no effect on anaerobic tetrachloromethane metabolism but inhibited dimer formation, half-maximally at a concentration of 0.1 mmol L?1. Trichloromethyl octadecenoic acid was also found, but at levels 10-fold lower than the fatty acid dimers. The data suggest that the hepato-protective effect of PBN against tetrachloromethane-toxicity may be due to its ability to scavenge fatty acid radicals, resulting in stable, non-reactive entities, which do not undergo secondary reactions such as cross-linking. The data confirm and extend previous findings that crosslinking plays an important role in tetrachloromethane toxicity and similar cases of metabolic radical-induced toxicity.  相似文献

Pinot noir, bastardo, rkaziteli and semillon grapes on vines grown in the Barossa Valley of South Australia were treated with a commercial dithianon formulation. The grapes were harvested by hand eight days later, and made into wine. Grab samples of berries, grape juice and the young wine were analysed for fungicide residues. No dithianon was detected in control grape samples, grape juices or wines. Significant dithianon levels were detected on the skins of treated grape samples. Dithianon is stable on the surface of grapes under the ambient conditions prevalent under the grape canopy for at least two weeks. No dithianon was detected in grape juice, on grape skins after berry crushing, in the lees, or in the young wine. Dithianon is unstable in grape juice and wine. Dithianon half‐life (initial concentration = 1 μg/mL) in semillon grape juice = 2.8 h, semillon wine = 0.58 h, pinot noir grape juice = 4.6 h, and pinot‐noir wine = 0.29 h. Treatment with fining agents or heat does not significantly reduce the rate of degradation. These results suggest that spraying table grapes with dithianon two weeks before harvest would result in exposure to essentially the full dose of active ingredient sprayed, and increase the risk to human health through ingestion of this compound. However, any threat to human health from ingestion through grape juice or wine is limited since any contact with grape juice or wine leads to rapid decomposition of dithianon by some as yet undetermined process.  相似文献

The effect of selenium on the vegetative reproduction of cultured Lemna minor was investigated. Cultures were grown for 28 days at a temperature of 23 ± 3°C and under a constant (24 h) light cycle. Growth was monitored every seven days. The growth of L. minor was inhibited at high concentrations (>5mg/L [Se]), but stimulated at low concentrations (0.2—2mg/L [Se]). This stimulation of growth at low selenium concentrations has significant implications for the use of selenium enriched superphosphate fertilisers on selenium deficient pastures.  相似文献

Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the influence of age and injury mechanism on cervical spine tolerance to injury from head contact loading using survival analysis.

Methods: This study analyzed data from previously conducted experiments using post mortem human subjects (PMHS). Group A tests used the upright intact head–cervical column experimental model. The inferior end of the specimen was fixed, the head was balanced by a mechanical system, and natural lordosis was removed. Specimens were placed on a testing device via a load cell. The piston applied loading at the vertex region. Spinal injuries were identified using medical images. Group B tests used the inverted head–cervical column experimental model. In one study, head–T1 specimens were fixed distally, and C7–T1 joints were oriented anteriorly, preserving lordosis. Torso mass of 16 kg was added to the specimen. In another inverted head–cervical column study, occiput–T2 columns were obtained, an artificial head was attached, T1–T2 was fixed, C4–C5 disc was maintained horizontal in the lordosis posture, and C7–T1 was unconstrained. The specimens were attached to the drop test carriage carrying a torso mass of 15 kg. A load cell at the inferior end measured neck loads in both studies. Axial neck force and age were used as the primary response variable and covariate to derive injury probability curves using survival analysis.

Results: Group A tests showed that age is a significant (P < .05) and negative covariate; that is, increasing age resulted in decreasing force for the same risk. Injuries were mainly vertebral body fractures and concentrated at one level, mid-to-lower cervical spine, and were attributed to compression-related mechanisms. However, age was not a significant covariate for the combined data from group B tests. Both group B tests produced many soft tissue injuries, at all levels, from C1 to T1. The injury mechanism was attributed to mainly extension. Multiple and noncontiguous injuries occurred. Injury probability curves, ±95% confidence intervals, and normalized confidence interval sizes representing the quality of the mean curve are given for different data sets.

Conclusions: For compression-related injuries, specimen age should be used as a covariate or individual specimen data may be prescaled to derive risk curves. For distraction- or extension-related injuries, however, specimen age need not be used as a covariate in the statistical analysis. The findings from these tests and survival analysis indicate that the age factor modulates human cervical spine tolerance to impact injury.  相似文献

Production and use of engineered nanoparticles, such as titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nTiO2), is increasing worldwide, enhancing their probability to enter aquatic environments. However, direct effects of nTiO2 as well as ecotoxicological consequences due to the interactions of nTiO2 with environmental factors like ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on representatives of detrital food webs have not been assessed so far. Hence, the present study displayed for the first time adverse sublethal effects of nTiO2 at concentrations as low as 0.2 mg L−1 on the leaf shredding amphipod Gammarus fossarum both in presence and absence of ambient UV-irradiation following a 7-d exposure. In absence of UV-irradiation, however, the effects seemed to be driven by accumulation of nTiO2 at the bottom of the test vessels to which the gammarids were potentially exposed. The adverse sublethal and lethal effects on gammarids caused by the combined application of nTiO2 and ambient UV-irradiation are suggested to be driven by the formation of reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, both the accumulation of nTiO2 at the bottom of the test vessel and the UV induced formation of reactive oxygen species clearly affected its ecotoxicity, which is recommended for consideration in the environmental risk assessment of nanoparticles.  相似文献
