Abstract: The landscape of the intermountain west has changed dramatically in the last 150 years, particularly in the state of Washington, where over half the native shrubsteppe ecosystem has been converted to agricultural lands, resulting in a fragmented landscape with few extensive tracts of shrubsteppe. We examined the historical and current distribution of shrubsteppe on different soil types in eastern Washington, and we censused bird communities at 78 sites in shrubsteppe from 1991 to 1993. We compared abundance of species among soil types and range conditions and developed models of species occurrence using site-specific vegetation and landscape variables. The pattern of shrubsteppe conversion has resulted in a disproportionate loss of deep soil communities. Eight bird species showed strong relationships with soil type and three with range condition. These associations likely resulted from the influence of soil type and range history on the vegetation of these communities. Brewer's Sparrows ( Spizella breweri ) and Sage Sparrows ( Amphispiza belli ) reached their highest abundances in deep, loamy soils, whereas Loggerhead Shrikes ( Lanius ludovicianus ) were most abundant in deep, sandy soils. Sage Sparrows occurred more frequently in landscapes dominated by shrubsteppe, indicating a negative relationship with fragmentation. Our results suggest that fragmentation of shrubsteppe and the pattern of agricultural conversion among soil types have had detrimental effects on numerous shrubsteppe species. The landscape for species with an affinity for deep, loamy soil communities has changed considerably more than the overall loss of shrubsteppe would indicate. Conservation practices that emphasize retention of shrubsteppe communities on deep soils and that reduce further fragmentation will be critical to the maintenance of avian biological diversity in this system. 相似文献

in Teller County, Colorado, USA. In this article, an 11-step method for landscape planning is proposed. In step 1, an issue,
or set of related issues, is identified as posing a problem and/or opportunity to people and/or the environment. In step 2,
a goal, or several goals, is established to address the problem or opportunity. In steps 3 and 4, inventories and analyses
of biophysical and sociocultural processes are conducted, first at the regional level and then at the local level. Step 5
involves detailed studies (such as suitability analyses) that link the inventory and analysis information to the problems
or opportunities and goals. Detailed studies link regional and local information to specific sites. Thus, this method involves
a regional-local-specific site hierarchy. In step 6, concepts are developed that lead to a landscape plan in step 7. During
step 8, the plan is explained through a systematic educational and citizen involvement effort to the affected public. In step
9, detailed designs are developed that again are explained to the specific individuals who will be impacted by the designs.
It is in step 10 when the plan and designs are implemented. Step 11 involves the administration of the plan. The method is
illustrated through an example of growth management planning for Teller County and the city of Woodland Park, Colorado.

The 2003 war with Iraq has generated security concerns that present unique challenges to the practice of providing international humanitarian assistance during war and conflict. Objective research studies on security management are lacking. However, case studies have proven to be an important education and training tool to advance situational awareness of security risks. These challenges are illustrated by an analysis of the events surrounding the first ambush of, and assassination attempt on, a senior US aid official in Baghdad. Before deployment to conflict areas, especially those characterised by insurgent activity, humanitarian providers must realistically assess the threats to life and to the mission. The objective of this project was to assess the efficacy of fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with chromosome-specific DNA probes to identify chromosome number in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded placental specimens. Using this approach, 75 per cent of the karyotypes in 20 formalin-fixed placental samples (comprising aneuploids, triploids, and normals) were correctly identified. As this technology improves, the ability to obtain information regarding chromosomal abnormalities in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded placental tissue should improve as well. Fetal blood sampling has been used in the genetic work-up of twin gestations for rapid karotyping. We present a case of twins which on ultrasound evaluation revealed hydrops fetalis in one twin and a normal second twin. Fetal blood sampling revealed the presence of mosaicism for 46,XY/45,X in both twins. HLA antigen testing showed the twins to be identical. The patient elected pregnancy termination. Blood chromosomal analysis after delivery revealed both twins to have 46,XY/45,X mosaicism, but the twin with signs of hydrops fetalis had tissue chromosomes of 45,X and the normal twin had tissue chromosomes of 46,XY. Amniotic fluid chromosomal analysis revealed 46,XY in twin A and 45,X in twin B. This represents a case of identical (monozygotic) twins with sex discordance. In this case, there was the probable occurrence of post-zygotic chromosomal non-disjunction leading to the discordancy of the sex in this set of twins. With the presence of vascular communication in monozygotic twins, there is the possibility of exchange of blood in monozygotic twins and the result of blood chimerism in twins. 相似文献

The establishment and interrelationships of microorganisms with soil and plant processes during reclamation are greatly influenced by the composition of the planting medium and vegetation practices. While in some instances the parent material may be used as the vegetation medium, the practice of topsoiling, particularly the direct haul method, may be beneficial in introducing microorganisms and improving the quality of the plant growth medium of spoils that are chemically or physically less desirable than the native soils. The influence of different vegetation types on soil development on surface mines may be a reflection of physioiogical differences that affect microbial development in the rhizosphere. Such differences include levels of carbohydrate translocated to the root system and/or released into the surrounding soil; the plant's effectiveness as a mycorrhizal host; and the rate of degradation of plant residues. It has become apparent that microbial interactions are an important part of plant and soil processes in reclamation. While some of the microorganisms important in plant growth and soil development can be introduced readily by management practices, the majority usually are disseminated by natural means and only gradually become a part of the microbial population. More research is needed on developing new methods or refining current procedures for early introduction of these microorganisms in reclamation practices. 相似文献
