Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) isomers (α-, β- and γ- HCH [lindane]) were recently added to the list of persistent organic pollutants regulated by the Stockholm Convention, and therefore, the legacy of HCH and lindane production has become an issue of global relevance. The production of lindane with the much larger quantities of associated waste isomers has generated large waste deposits and contaminated sites. This article presents an overview of HCH-polluted sites in Brazil as a basis for further activities related to the Stockholm Convention. The locations of HCH stockpiles and contaminated sites in Brazil arising from production and formulation have been compiled and mapped. This shows that the measures taken over the past 25 years have not resulted in remediation of the HCH pollution. An exposure risk study has been summarised for one major site and is included to demonstrate the contemporary relevance of the contamination. Major site remediation efforts are planned at one site but people live close to several other sites, and there is an urgent need of further assessments and remediation to ensure the protection of human health and the environment. The Stockholm Convention requires a systematic approach and should be adopted for the assessment of all sites and appropriate isolation/remediation measures should be facilitated. The appropriate planning of these activities for the production site in Rio de Janeiro could be a positive contribution for Rio+20 highlighting that green economy and sustainable production also include the appropriate management of legacies of historic production of an industrial sector (here the organochlorine industry).  相似文献

Specimens of the edible crab Cancer pagurus (L.) collected in the Skagerrak, Denmark, between June and August 1990 were examined in the laboratory. Impairment of respiratory function after pre-exposure (7 d) to sub-lethal concentrations of Cu and Zn (0.4 mg l-1) was only detectable during hypoxic exposure [PO2 (partial pressure of oxygen) =60 torr]. This was indicated by a decrease in the transfer factor (TO2), due principally to an increase in the PO2 differential across the gills. Cu and Zn exposure did not cause significant changes in ventilation or perfusion although there was some indication that cardiac output may increase in respiratory-impaired individuals. After 28 d exposure no difference was noted in the respiratory responses to hypoxia of treated and untreated crabs. It is concluded that respiratory impairment was due to an increase in the diffusion barrier thickness at the gills and that this was reversible even during continued exposure to trace metal contamination.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: The U.S. Geological Survey has performed hundreds of time-of-travel and tracer dispersion studies in streams and estuaries nationwide. This paper presents an approach to unitizing this type of data to make it more universally usable in predicting the behavior of soluble contaminants entering waterways. Practical application of the superposition principle and of the scalene triangle as an approximation of the response curve from a slug injection of a solute are demonstrated to be a means of simulating the downstream effects of any form of soluble contaminant release.  相似文献

Beginning with the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act in 1969, the federal government of the United States has enacted numerous pieces of legislation intended to protect or conserve the environment. Other national governments have also enacted environmental legislation during the past two decades. State and local governments have also adopted policies concerned with environmental planning and management. Multiple laws and overlapping governmental agency responsibilities have confused development and resource management efforts. A comprehensive methodology that integrates the legal mandates and the agency missions into a common and unified framework is needed. Ecological planning offers such a method. Application of the method allows planners and resource managers to better understand the nature and character of the land and/or resource and therefore make better decisions about its appropriate use or management. The steps taken in an ecological planning process—1) goal setting, 2) inventory and analysis of data, 3) suitability analysis, 4) developing alternatives, 5) implementation, 6) administration, and 7) evaluation—are outlined and explained. Hand-drawn overlays and computer programs as techniques for handling ecological planning information are compared. Observations and suggestions for further research are offered.  相似文献

Summary In laboratory studies using albino house mice, a female's prior intrauterine position can affect many postnatal physiological, morphological and behavioral characteristics. Females flanked by males in utero (2M females) exhibit more aggressive dominance than females flanked by females (OM females). Thus, wild 2M females may be most successful during peak population densities when their aggressive nature would allow them to displace other females from limited resources. 2M and 0M females and males delivered by cesarean section were individually marked and released as young adults on two occasions onto a highway island (the area enclosed by exit and entrance ramps at an interchange) to determine whether 2 M females have a competitive advantage over 0 M females in the field. Males were included to create realistic population structure; their intrauterine position was not a treatment. Feeding stations afforded individuals an opportunity to exhibit their dominance by maintaining home-ranges at or near the stations. The populations were monitored by periodic live-trapping and reproductive success was determined using field body weights and by post-mortem examination for uterine implantation scars. Survival and capture rates were estimated, using a modified Jolly-Seber markrecapture program, for each of four intervals between trapping occasions over the course of 7 weeks. There were no overall differences in survivorship between 2M and 0M females, neither type of female was caught more frequently at feeding stations and they did not differ in measures of reproductive success. However, 2M females had significantly larger home-range sizes than 0M females and thus space use may be a trait masculinized by prior intrauterine position. Although there are a number of life-history characteristics that differ between 0M and 2M females in the laboratory that we did not test specifically in the field, our findings and other features of wild house mouse biology suggest that prior intrauterine position does not have a strong effect on survival and reproduction in the wild. A model of extractive industries is developed, in which firms select the time-paths of exploration and extraction that maximize their present values. Two externalities unique to the exploration process are found to distort industry behavior. Industry behavior is simulated under conditions of competition, monopoly, and central management, and the effects of percentage depletion allowances and changes in the discount rate are observed. Monopolists overconserve the resource and hold excess reserves; competitors who enter mineral lands freely tend to overexplore and overextract; percentage depletion allowances decrease reserves; and higher discount rates reduce extraction in the long run.  相似文献
