In order to improve the process performance regarding the removal of organics, nitrogen, and an odor-causing compound (sulfide) contained in domestic wastewater, an entrapped-mixed-microbial cell (EMMC) with and without humic substances for both fixed and moving carrier reactors and conventional suspended growth culture (i.e. conventional activated sludge process) were investigated simultaneously. Both synthetic (simulated to the organics concentration of general domestic sewage) and actual domestic wastewater were investigated under operational conditions of 12 h of hydraulic retention time (HRT) with 1 h of aeration and 1 h of non-aeration, and 6 h of HRT with continuous aeration, at a room temperature of 25 +/- 2 degrees C. It was found that entrapping humic substances in the EMMC carriers had no impact on the removal of organics, nitrogen, and the odor-producing compound. Additionally, the performance of the EMMC moving carrier system for the removal of these pollutants is similar to that of the EMMC fixed carrier system. In general, the EMMC associated systems which provide high solids retention time achieve a better removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrogen, and the odor-producing substance than the suspended growth system for both HRTs of 6 h (continuous aeration) and 12 h (1 h of aeration and 1 h of non-aeration). Both the fixed and moving carrier EMMC processes, therefore, have the potential for improvement or replacement of the existing conventional activated sludge process with regard to improving the effluent qualities (such as COD, nitrogen and odor-producing compound) for reuse/disposal.  相似文献

A 6-month greenhouse pot trial was performed, aimed at screening appropriate Sesbania species for remediation of Pb/Zn and Cu mine tailings. Performances of young seedlings of four Sesbania species (S. cannabina, S. grandiflora, S. rostrata, and S. sesban) were compared with and without inoculation of rhizobia. Seedlings were planted in two types of tailings amended with garden soil or garden soil mixed with river sediment. The results indicated that inoculated plants generally produced a higher biomass than samples without inoculation. Pb/Zn mine tailings containing rather high concentrations of total and water-soluble Cu, Pb, and Zn were toxic to plant growth compared with Cu mine tailings, according to the growth performance of the four species. Sesbania sesban and S. rostrata showed superior growth performance, compared to the other two species. Thus, they can serve as pioneer species to modify the barren environment, by providing organic matter and essential nutrients such as nitrogen, upon decomposition, in a relatively short period of time. This is especially true for S. rostrata, which is an annual plant that forms both stem and root nodules. However, a longer-term field trial should be conducted to investigate if superior species can beneficially modify the habitat for the growth of subsequent plant communities.  相似文献

In this study, combinations of applied pressure, pressing time and polymer dose were examined in an air pressure plate apparatus to explore their integrated influence on the dewatering of an alum sludge. Results of the investigation demonstrated that dewatering can be enhanced by increases in pressure and time. However, a point is reached at which continued increases in pressure and time offer little benefit. The data also confirmed that polymer affects the rate of water release rather than the extent of dewatering. Increased rates of water release due to increasing polymer dose can be attributed to the aggregation of sludge particles by polymer addition. It was also evident in this study that the initial sludge depth has a major impact on the average cake moisture content at a given dewatering time. It was apparent that once the initial sludge thickness exceeds about 2 cm, the water release follows a fairly similar pattern, which can be represented by a simple empirical model.  相似文献

In 1995, the ADEME launched a research program called "Waste Ecocompatibility" in order to define a reliable methodology for measuring the impact of waste in storage or reuse scenarios. The French concept of "Ecocompatibility" is defined as the situation where the pollutant flux from waste disposed of or used in specified conditions is compatible with the environmental acceptance of the receiving environments. The chief feature of this definition is to integrate the evaluation of the three following terms: pollutants emission from the waste, transport of the pollutants from the waste to the receptor cells and the environmental acceptance of the receiving environments. The "Waste Ecocompatibility" program consisted of a literature survey and an experimental part. The literature study aimed to determine factors and waste characteristics to be considered for a reliable ecocompatility assessment, to provide an overview of the available tools for measuring those factors and characteristics and to propose a first approach of the methodology. In the framework of the experimental program, this approach was then applied to three theoretical scenarios to validate the laboratory tools (comparative study of laboratory and field results) and to calibrate the global methodology. This paper deals with the results of the experimental program concerning the impact study on receiving environments: impact on plants and microorganisms living in soil, impacts on soil fauna and aquatic fauna. In other papers we intend to present the operational methodology for the assessment of waste ecocompatibility. It includes bio-assays at laboratory scale (microcosms), pilot scale (mesocosms) and in situ experiments (experimental prairie). To limit the use of in situ experiments other research works are necessary to validate bio-assays at laboratory or pilot scale.  相似文献

The relative influence of limnological confounding factors on cadmium (Cd) bioaccumulation and metallothionein (MT) synthesis was quantified in natural populations of freshwater bivalves (Pyganodon grandis) living in lakes along a Cd concentration gradient. During the ice-free period, we measured 15 environmental variables in the water compartment and determined total concentrations of Cd and MT in the gills of bivalves at 37 littoral stations in 20 lakes distributed across the mining area of Rouyn-Noranda in northwestern Quebec. A multiple linear regression model including pH (+), dissolved Ca concentrations (-) and free Cd2+ concentrations at the sediment-water interface (+) explained 74% of the variability in Cd concentrations in the bivalve gills. Dissolved Ca (-) and free Cd2+ (+) together explained 62% of the variation in MT concentrations in the bivalve gills. Partial linear regression analyses indicated that the limnological factors' pure and shared effects together accounted for 48 and 45% of the total variation in Cd and MT concentrations in the gills, respectively. A lake selection procedure that could be applied in monitoring programs is proposed to minimise the relative influence of these confounding variables.  相似文献

Ammonia (NH3) removal efficencies were evaluated when hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and NH3 in binary mixture gases were supplied to a ceramic biofilter seeded with earthworm (Lumbricus terrestris) casts. The effect of inlet H2S concentration and space velocity (SV) on the removal of NH3 was investigated after the acclimation of the biofilter with NH3 gas. When NH3 was singly supplied to the biofilter, NH3 removal was maintained at almost 100% until inlet NH3 concentration was increased up to 600 microL L(-1) and SV up to 330 h(-1), at which the elimination capacity of NH3 was 148 g N m(-3) h(-1). When H2S was supplied simultaneously, however, the accumulation of toxic sulfide ions showed dual effects on NH3 removal efficiencies. First, no effects were observed at inlet H2S loading below 60 g S m(-3) h(-1); however, inhibition by H2S at higher loading was observed above 60 g S m(-3) h(-1). The point at which loading achieved a maximum of more than 99% NH3 removal efficiency was 139 g N m(-3) h(-1), when inlet H2S concentration was held under 100 microL L(-1), but it dropped to 76 and 30 g N m(-3) h(-1) when the inlet H2S concentration increased to 220 and 460 microL L(-1), respectively. The critical points of inlet H2S loading that guaranteed over 99% NH3 removal were determined as 100, 100, 60, and 40 g S m(-3) h(-1) at inlet NH3 concentrations of 100, 200, 400, and 600 microL L(-1), respectively. Inlet NH3 loading had synergic effects of increasing the inhibition of inlet H2S loading on the NH3 removability of the biofilter.  相似文献

A Level III fugacity model was applied to characterize the transfer processes and environmental fate of benzo[a]pyrene in wastewater-irrigated areas of Tianjin, China. The physical-chemical properties and transfer parameters of benzo[a]pyrene were used in the model and the concentration distribution of benzo[a]pyrene in sediment, soil, water, air, fish, and crop compartments, as well as transfer fluxes across the compartments, were then derived under steady-state assumptions. The calculated results were compared with monitoring data for air, soil, water, and sediment collected from the literature. The results indicate that there was generally good agreement and the differences were within an order of magnitude for air, soil, and sediment. The concentration of benzo[a]pyrene in the ambient air in the area was very low with a majority present sorbed to aerosol. In the water compartment, approximately 70% of benzo[a]pyrene dissolved in water phase. Relatively high concentrations of the compound were found in the soil and sediment, with the soil serving as the dominant sink in the area. Benzo[a]pyrene, with a slow metabolic rate, was found to accumulate in fish in the area.  相似文献

Arctic residents, whose diets comprise a large proportion of traditional terrestrial and freshwater foodstuffs, have received the highest radiation exposures to artificial radionuclides in the Arctic. Doses to members of both the average population and selected indigenous population groups in the Arctic depend on the rates of consumption of locally-derived terrestrial and freshwater foodstuffs, including reindeer/caribou meat, freshwater fish, goat cheese, berries, mushrooms and lamb. The vulnerability of arctic populations, especially indigenous peoples, to radiocaesium deposition is much greater than for temperate populations due to the importance of terrestrial, semi-natural exposure pathways where there is high radiocaesium transfer and a long ecological half-life for this radionuclide. In contrast, arctic residents with diets largely comprising marine foodstuffs have received comparatively low radiation exposures because of the lower levels of contamination of marine organisms. Using arctic-specific information, the predicted collective dose is five times higher than that estimated by UNSCEAR for temperate areas. The greatest threats to human health and the environment posed by human and industrial activities in the Arctic are associated with the potential for accidents in the civilian and military nuclear sectors. Of most concern are the consequences of potential accidents in nuclear power plant reactors, during the handling and storage of nuclear weapons, in the decommissioning of nuclear submarines and in the disposal of spent nuclear fuel from vessels. It is important to foster a close association between risk assessment and practical programmes for the purposes of improving monitoring, formulating response strategies and implementing action plans.  相似文献

Phosphate rock samples collected from the Dange Formation within the Sokoto basin were analyzed for trace element constituents using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRFA) techniques, while natural activity concentrations due to 235U, 232Th, and 40K were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The analytical results show that the average concentrations of some toxic elements (As, Sb, Cr, and Zn) in phosphate rocks are not appreciably different from that in agricultural soils. However the U and Th contents are enriched significantly in comparison. The results were used to assess the environmental toxicity of heavy metals and radiation hazard attributable to the direct application of phosphate rock as fertilizer.  相似文献

Transfer factors (TFs) of some selected radionuclides from ten different Japanese soils to radish have been studied by radiotracer experiments. The geometric mean values of TFs (on a wet weight basis) of radioactive Cs, Sr, Co, Mn and Zn for edible parts of radish (tuber) were 0.0090. 0.029, 0.00094, 0.0034 and 0.067, respectively. TFs for leaf were higher than those for tuber. The geometric mean values of leaf/tuber ratios were 4.1 for Cs, 4.9 for Sr, 1.6 for Co, 11 for Mn and 1.9 for Zn. Most of the Cs TFs obtained for andosol, which is the most common arable soil in Japan, were higher than those for the other soils. This might be due to the high concentrations of organic matter and alophen in andosol. The obtained TFs were compared to reference values of IAEA Technical Report 364.  相似文献
