The thermal exploitation of wastewood with Greek lignite was investigated by performing tests in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor, a 1-MW(th) semi-industrial circulating fluidized bed combustor, and an industrial boiler. Blends of natural wood, demolition wood, railroad sleepers, medium-density fiberboard residues, and power poles with lignite were used, and the co-combustion efficiency and the effect of wastewood addition on the emitted pollutants were investigated. Carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen emissions were continuously monitored, and, during the industrial-scale tests, the toxic emissions (polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans and heavy metals) were determined. Ash samples were analyzed for heavy metals in an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy spectrophotometer. Problems were observed during the preparation of wastewood, because species embedded with different compounds, such as railway sleepers and demolition wood, were not easily treated. All wastewood blends were proven good fuels; co-combustion proceeded smoothly and homogeneous temperature and pressure profiles were obtained. Although some fluctuations were observed, low emissions of gaseous pollutants were obtained for all fuel blends. The metal element emissions (in the flue gases and the solid residues) were lower than the legislative limits. Therefore, wastewood co-combustion with lignite can be realized, provided that the fuel handling and preparation can be practically performed in large-scale installations.  相似文献

The bioaccumulation and toxicity of zinc in Cladophora glomerata from two populations in the River Roding, Essex, UK, were examined in experimental laboratory flowing-water channels. Plants were subjected to zinc concentrations ranging from 0 to 4.0 mg litre(-1) at current velocities of 20-33 cm s(-1) for up to 3 h. Zinc in algal tissue was then quantified and toxicity was assessed by the ability of the alga to grow in a recovery medium after the experimental treatment. There was little difference in zinc bioaccumulation between Cladophora from the site showing mild organic pollution and that from the site subjected to considerable inputs from urban and motorway runoff. Uptake of zinc increased with increasing concentration in the test solution and was linear and proportional up to 0.4 mg litre(-1). Three stages of uptake were identified with the most dramatic accumulation occurring in the first 10 min. Experimental concentration factors ranged from 1.9-5.2 x 10(3), which were in agreement with those previously obtained in the field. Cellular damage was evident in Cladophora subjected to 0.4 mg litre(-1) zinc, and this increased with increasing zinc concentration, thus leading to the conclusion that, at times, the levels of zinc found in the river could be potentially damaging.  相似文献

Brominated flame-retardants (BFRs) are used as additives in plastics to decrease the rate of combustion of these materials, leading to greater consumer safety. As the use of plastics has increased, the production and use of flame-retardants has also grown. Many BFRs are persistent and have been detected in environmental samples, raising concerns about the biological/toxicological risk associated with their use. Most BFRs appear to be non-toxic, however there is still some concern that these compounds, or possible contaminants in BFRs mixtures could interact with cellular receptors. In this study we have examined the interaction of decabromodiphenyl ether, Firemaster BP4A (tetrabromobisphenol A), Firemaster PHT4 (tetrabromophthalic anhydride), hexabromobenzene, pentabromotoluene, decabromobiphenyl, Firemaster BP-6 (2,2,4,4,5,5-hexabromobiphenyl) and possible contaminants of BFR mixtures with the Ah receptor. Receptor binding and activation was examined using the Gel Retardation Assay and increased expression of dioxin responsive genes was detected using the reporter gene based CALUX assay. The results demonstrate the ability of BFRs to activate the AhR signal transduction pathway at moderate to high concentrations as assessed using both assays. AhR-dependent activation by BFRs may be due in part to contaminants present in commercial/technical mixtures. This was suggested by our comparative analysis of Firemaster BP-6 versus its primary component 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexabromobiphenyl. Some technical mixtures of brominated flame-retardants contain brominated biphenyls, dioxins or dibenzofurans as contaminants. When tested in the CALUX assay these compounds were found to be equivalent to, or more active than their chlorinated analogues. Relative effective potency values were determined from dose response curves for these brominated HAHs.  相似文献

Human exposure to insoluble and soluble nickel compounds is extensive. Besides wide usage in many industries, nickel compounds are contained in cigarette smoke and, in low levels, in ambient particulate matter. Soluble nickel particulate, especially nickel sulfate (NiSO4), has been associated with acute lung injury. To begin identifying genes controlling susceptibility to NiSO4, mean survival times (MSTs) of eight inbred mouse strains were determined after aerosol exposure. Whereas A/J (A) mice were sensitive, C57BL/6J (B6) mice survived nearly twice as long (resistant). Their offspring were similarly resistant, demonstrating heritability as a dominant trait. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis of backcross mice generated from these strains identified a region on chromosome 6 significantly linked to survival time. Regions on chromosomes 1 and 12 were suggestive of linkage and regions on chromosomes 8, 9, and 16 contributed to the response. Haplotype analysis demonstrated that QTLs on chromosomes 6, 9, 12, and 16 could explain the MST difference between the parental strains. To complement QTL analysis results, cDNA microarray analysis was assessed following NiSO4 exposure of A and B6 mice. Significant expression changes were identified in one or both strains for >100 known genes. Closer evaluation of these changes revealed a temporal pattern of increased cell proliferation, extracellular matrix repair, hypoxia, and oxidative stress, followed by diminished surfactant proteins. Certain expressed sequence tags clustered with known genes, suggesting possible co-regulation and novel roles in pulmonary injury. Together, results from QTL and microarray analyses of nickel-induced acute lung injury survival allowed us to generate a short list of candidate genes.  相似文献

The photochemical oxygenation of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) in water was studied under a variety of reaction conditions employing various humic substances as photosensitizers. As predicted by theory, the reactions at low DMF concentrations were first order with respect to DMF, and the reaction rate constants were directly proportional to the average light intensity and to the concentration of humic substance. The rate of oxygenation photosensitized by the humic matter from a river was independent of hydrogen ion activity in the pH 5 to 9 range. Wavelength studies indicate that oxygenations photosensitized by humic substances are induced by ultraviolet and blue radiation. Rate constants computed for this photosensitized reaction in sunlight were in close agreement with experimental values. Calculations also show that the ratio of the sunlight rate constants to total visible solar irradiance (400 to 700 nm) is approximately constant. Therefore, it may be possible to calibrate rate constants for photosensitized reactions in terms of commonly measured units of visible light intensity such as foot candles.  相似文献

In this study, the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and pyrene, were subjected to temporal ozonation. The products from ozonation of 5 mg l(-1) BaP and 5 mg l(-1) pyrene, for varying time intervals (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 20, and 30 min) were tested for their effects on gap junction-mediated intercellular communication (GJIC) in Clone 9 rat liver cells. Additionally, the ozonation products were also analyzed by flow injection analysis/mass spectrometry (FIA/MS) and the results were compared with the toxicity observed in the GJIC assay. Treatment of the Clone 9 cells with 5 mg l(-1) of ozonated BaP products resulted in a decrease in GJIC that was inversely proportional to the length of ozonation. The products from 1 min of ozonation resulted in a 92% decrease in the rate of GJIC, but with >5 min ozonation, the products did not suppress GJIC. In contrast, pyrene (0.5 mg l(-1)) required >10 min of ozonation to alleviate its effects on GJIC. FIA/MS, using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), demonstrated products with higher molecular weights (MW) than their corresponding parent compounds, BaP (MW 252) and pyrene (MW 202). Ozonation of pyrene formed significantly fewer products than BaP. More importantly, pyrene ozonation products were constant from 1 to 10 min, while BaP ozonation products seemed to vary between time intervals. With the longer ozonation times (20 and 30 min), BaP and pyrene formed similar products (m/z peaks 157, 111, and 96). The suppression of GJIC by ozonated products seemed to correlate with oxidation of the aromatic ring framework. Further oxidation (longer ozonation times) to lower MW products correlated with restoration of normal GJIC.  相似文献

Visibility impairment from regional haze is a significant problem throughout the continental United States. A substantial portion of regional haze is produced by smoke from prescribed and wildland fires. Here we describe the integration of four simulation models, an array of GIS raster layers, and a set of algorithms for fire-danger calculations into a modeling framework for simulating regional-scale smoke dispersion. We focus on a representative fire season (2003) in the northwestern USA, on a 12 km domain, and track the simulated dispersion and concentration of PM2.5 over the course of the season. Simulated visibility reductions over national parks and wilderness areas are within the ranges of measured values at selected monitoring sites, although the magnitudes of peak events are underestimated because these include inputs other than fire. By linking the spatial and temporal patterns of haze-producing emissions to climatic variability, particularly synoptic weather patterns, and the stochastic nature of fire occurrence across the region, we can provide a robust method for estimating the quantity and distribution of fire-caused regional haze under climate-warming scenarios.  相似文献

Echinoderms from the shelf seas around the British Isles were examined by epifluorescence and transmission electron microscopy for the presence of sub-cuticular bacteria (SCB). Information was obtained on SCB distribution in 63 of the 88 species known from this area, and 40 of these contained SCB. The SCB were present in all five classes. Only 39% of the holothurian species had SCB. In each of the other four classes, 60% of the species were associated with SCB. No correlation was noted between host ecology and SCB distribution or morphology. SCB distribution appeared to be related to host phylogeny. Congeneric echinoderms almost always had or lacked SCB, and this was usually also true for co-familial species. SCB showed limited morphological diversity, with all of them fitting into a classification of three general types. There was no morphological evidence suggesting that they are chemoautotrophs or methylotrophs. Some species had two morphological types of symbiont. SCB load was quantified for four species, three of which had symbiont densities >109 SCB g-1 ash-free dry wt. SCB are probably heterotrophic and may be co-evolving with their hosts.  相似文献
