MANAGEMENT MODEL FOR CONTROLLING NITRATE CONTAMINATION IN THE NEW JERSEY PINE BARRENS AQUIFER1

ABSTRACT: Land use planning in rapidly developing areas can serve as an effective tool for minimizing water quality impacts on ground water supplies. A land use management model applied to Jackson Township of the New Jersey Pine Barrens was developed. The management model consisted of a simulation model for the transport of nitrates from septic tank systems through the aquifer and a multiobjective, goal programming optimization model to determine population density restrictions using 208 areawide planning population projections. Results showed that growth may have to be curtailed in several areas of Jackson Township and that current population projections over the next 30 years may result in unacceptably high nitrate concentrations downgradient of Jackson Township. The management framework provides a flexible approach to land use planning.     

Thermally induced formation of PCDD and PCDF from tri- and tetrachlorobenzene in dielectric fluids

The thermal behavior of dilute (5000-50 ppm) solutions of tri- and tetrachlorobenzene in mineral oil, silicone oil, and tetrachloroethylene (TCE) has been investigated. Although pyrolyses or combustion of neat chlorobenzenes readily forms significant yields of PCDDs/PCDFs, corresponding treatment of dilute solutions was generally non-productive. This result is consistent with the proposition that, under the conditions studied, the rate-limiting step for PCDD/PCDF formation is bimolecular in chlorobenzene. In contrast, earlier studies of PCBs implied a rate-limiting step that was unimolecular in chloroaromatics. Combustion of dilute solutions of chlorobenzenes in tetrachloroethylene did produce detectable concentrations of PCDF; this result reflects combination of chlorobenzene and TCE- or TCE-derived species.     

Temporal - and dose-related characteristics of biochemical and morphological alterations in the hamster induced by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- -dioxin

The temporal - and dose-related characteristics of hepatic enzymes induced and toxic responses elicited in the hamster by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo- -dioxin were examined. The results demonstrate a dissociation of the induction of these hepatic enzymes from TCDD-elicited lethality, but not necessarily hepatic damage, in this species. Furthermore, the hyperthyroidism observed is suggestive of a role of these hormones in the relatively insensitive nature of this species to TCDD treatment.

STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELING OF DYNAMICS OF NITRATE CONTAMINATION IN GROUND WATER1

ABSTRACT: Most research on the temporal aspect of nitrate pollution in water resources has focused on surface water. Comprehensive studies on the dynamics of nitrate in ground water are lacking, especially on a drainage basin scale and for relatively long periods of time. In this study, structural equation modeling is applied in investigating the influences of climate, hydrology, and nitrogen management in agricultural production on nitrate concentration in the Big Spring Basin, Iowa, over a 10-year period. The study shows that for given hydrogeological settings, nitrogen management practices and climate are the two most important factors that affect nitrate dynamics. The long-term trend of nitrate is closely related to the nitrogen input primarily determined by management practices. The potential effects of nitrogen management, however, are contingent on the variations of climate. The improvements in water quality (reduced nitrate concentration and loads) in relation to improved nitrogen management are often overshadowed by the impact of climate, especially in extremely dry or wet years. The variations of climate and hydrology have much greater impacts on the nitrate dynamics than the changes in nitrogen input. This study reveals significant seasonal variation in the relations between nitrate concentration and influencing factors, which is also closely related to the seasonal variation in climate. Assessment of management practices and resultant water quality should consider the impact of short- and long-term climate dynamics.     

APPLICATIONS OF A GIS FOR MODELING THE SENSITIVITY OF WATER RESOURCES TO ALTERATIONS IN CLIMATE IN THE GUNNISON RIVER BASIN,COLORADO1

ABSTRACT: The Gunnison River drains a mountainous basin in western Colorado, and is a large contributor of water to the Colorado River. As part of a study to assess water resource sensitivity to alterations in climate in the Gunnison River basin, climatic and hydrologic processes are being modeled. A geographic information system (GIS) is being used in this study as a link between data and modelers - serving as a common data base for project personnel with differing specialties, providing a means to investigate the effects of scale on model results, and providing a framework for the transfer of parameter values among models. Specific applications presented include: (1) developing elevation grids for a precipitation model from digital elevation model (DEM) point-elevation values, and visualizing the effects of grid resolution on model results; (2) using a GIS to facilitate the definition and parameterization of a distributed-parameters, watershed model in multiple basins; and (3) nesting atmospheric and hydrologic models to produce possible scenarios of climate change.
