ABSTRACT: Multivariate analyses were used to develop equations that could predict certain water quality (WQ) conditions for unmonitored watersheds in Puerto Rico based on their physical characteristics. Long term WQ data were used to represent the WQ of 15 watersheds in Puerto Rico. A factor analysis (FA) was performed to reduce the number of chemical constituents. Cluster analysis (CA) was used to group watersheds with similar WQ characteristics. Finally, a discriminant analysis (DA) was performed to relate the WQ clusters to different physical parameters and generate predicting equations. The FA identified six factors (77 percent of variation explained): nutrients, dissolved ions, sodium and chloride, silicacious geology, red ox conditions, and discharge. From the FA, specific conductance, sodium, phosphorous, silica, and dissolved oxygen were selected to represent the WQ characteristics in the CA. The CA determined five groups of watersheds (forested, urban polluted, mixed urban/rural, forested plutonic, and limestone) with similar WQ properties. From the five WQ clusters, two categories can be observed: forested and urban watersheds. The DA found that changes in forest cover, percent of limestone, mean annual rainfall, and watershed shape factor were the most important physical features affecting the WQ of watersheds in Puerto Rico. 相似文献

Both a cross-sectional and a longitudinal study were performed to investigate whether or not the collection time should be taken into consideration when generating a patient's risk for fetal Down syndrome with multiple marker screening. Diurnal variations of third-trimester alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels and first-trimester human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) levels have been previously reported. In addition, large episodic fluctuations of conjugated and unconjugated oestriol (uE3) as well as a diurnal variation have also been reported in the third trimester. If the levels of these analytes routinely fluctuate during the day, they could affect a patient's risk calculation for fetal Down syndrome. The longitudinal study evaluated ten non-diabetic women who underwent sequential sampling for AFP, hCG, and uE3. The cross-sectional study evaluated 1953 patients for these three markers whose time of sampling was recorded between 8·00 a.m. and 5·59 p.m. Using either study design, no significant effect was seen in the median MOM levels of the screening analytes as a function of the time of day. 相似文献

In the present study, a recently reported immunochemical technique for measuring acetylcholinesterase (AChE) in amniotic fluid utilizing the 4F19 antibody was compared with the widely utilized polyacrylamide gel technique to determine whether the immunochemical assay provided an advantage in separating unaffected pregnancies from those associated with open spina bifida (OSB) and open ventral wall defects (OVWD). The study included (1) 73 amniotic fluid samples from unaffected pregnancies [alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) < 2 MoM] with no visible gel AChE band, (2) nine bloodstained samples from unaffected pregnancies (AFP 2·2–4·0 MoM) with visible gel AChE bands, (3) 18 samples associated with OSB (AFP 2·2–7·0 MoM) with visible gel AChE bands, and (4) 20 samples associated with OVWD (AFP 3·2–53·5 MoM) with visible gel AChE bands. The immunochemical assay produced ranges of measurements in the four respective categories as follows: (1) 2–60 arbitrary units (AU): (2) 14–69 AU, (3) 61–593 AU, and (4)22–476 AU. Eight of the nine unaffected pregnancies with visible gel AChE bands had immunochemical measurements below the highest measurement for the samples with no visible AChE band (60 AU), as did five out of 20 OVWD pregnancies. Two of the OSB cases had values of 61 and 62 AU. These data indicate that the 4F19 specific monoclonal antibody to AChE is capable of distinguishing unaffected from affected pregnancies with reasonable reliability but that more work needs to be done to establish the extent of overlap between the unaffected and affected populations. 相似文献

The aim was to assess the role that fetal bladder size has in the determination of fetal hydronephrosis. Forty-three fetuses were evaluated for fetal hydronephrosis in the second trimester of pregnancy. Anteroposterior measurements of the renal pelvis were obtained with a full bladder and again when the bladder emptied in each fetus. Statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman rank order correlation coefficient to assess the relationship between bladder status and renal dilation. The anteroposterior size of the fetal renal pelvis diminished from 6.8 ± 1.8 mm on a full bladder scan to 4.5 ± 1.6 mm when the bladder was emptied (P<0.001). Fifty-three per cent of the fetuses whose renal pelvic measurements were 5 mm or more on a full bladder scan had normal-appearing renal pelvises when their bladders emptied. The status of the fetal bladder should be considered when evaluating fetal hydronephrosis. 相似文献

Summary Males of the wool-carder bee, Anthidium manicatum, patrol clumps of garden plants. Females of this species visit these plants for pollen, nectar, and pubescence; they also mate there. Females are polyandrous, with intervals between copulations as short as 35 s. Patrolling males defend their territories (0.1–1.3 m2) against other males and against other species of flower-visiting insects. Honey bees may be rendered unable to fly by the attacks of A. manicatum.Territory owners perform exploratory flights to other males' territories, changing territories often (median ownership 4–7 days; maximum 30 days) and flying up to 450 m to establish new territories. Territorial usurpations are nearly always by larger males.Female visitation rate is significantly correlated with number of flowers on a territory. The head size of territory-owner males shows significant correlation with territorial quality (measured by number of flowers, not area) and thus with number of female visits and copulatory opportunities. Some males fail to maintain territories and instead attempt to forage and copulate in other males' territories while the owners are otherwise occupied. Nonowner males are significantly smaller than owners, forage less often and from fewer flowers, and achieve significantly fewer copulations than owners. Females, however, do not reject smaller, nonowner males at a higher rate than they do larger, owner males; their choice for male size appears to be indirect, based instead on choice of food resource.The interval between a copulation and the male's next attempt with a different female is not shorter than that involving the same female. Males do not escort just-mated females about their teritories, as observed in Anthidium maculosum. Territorial behavior in this species most likely evolved through intrasexual competition for reproductive success which led to sexual dimorphism. Zooplankton (>800 m) and water samples were collected at night at eleven stations in Parry Channel and adjacent waters, between 28 August and 14 September 1986. Chlorophyll concentrations varied between 17 g l-1 at the surface at one station in Wellington Channel, Canada, and 1.5 g l-1 throughout the top 30 m at one station in Byam Martin Channel, Canada. In tows from 0 to 50 m the zooplankton community at all stations was dominated by varying proportions of three species,Calanus hyperboreus, C. glacialis andMetridia longa. Levels of chlorophyllderived pigments inC. hyperboreus Stages V, IV and III were correlated with the concentration of chlorophyll at the chlorophyll maximum. Defecation rate constants, measured for the different stages where present, were variable but not correlated with ambient chlorophyll concentrations. Ammonia excretion was measured simultaneously for the communities in which defecation was being measured in the invividual species and stages. In these experiments the rate of ammonia accumulation decreased significantly over the period during which the copepods were actively defecating (usually the first 3 h) and then tended to a constant level (over the next 18 to 20 h). The time courses of ammonia accumulation could be described by a model comprised of the sum of a straight line and a saturating curve. For seven experiments the ammonia release given by the asymptote of the saturating component was correlated with the estimate of community defecation, obtained by summing the individual defecations, suggesting that the two processes were closely associated. Weight specific defecation and weight specific defecation-associated ammonia excretion were both correlated with ambient chlorophyll concentration. The ratio of initial to basal ammonia excretion rate varied between 2 and 20, so that defecation-associated ammonia release may be important in the estimation of in vivo nitrogen excretion or regeneration rates. 相似文献

In this study we define for the first time the distribution of alpha-fetoprotein levels and acetylcholinesterase ratios in amniotic fluid samples associated with fetal gastroschisis. need the ability to identify the processes that determine patterns of abundance of marine species. We describe a preliminary
Geographic Information System (GIS) in which spatial data on environmental variables (seabird colony locations, sea depth
and seabed sediments) are integrated with realistic energy constraints faced by marine birds during the breeding season. A
simple foraging model predicts the spatial variation in the quality of given locations as potential feeding sites under different
feeding conditions and stages of the breeding cycle. We show how the approach can be used to help managers identify key marine

The activity of the enzymes aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (AARS) in adult females and males and copepodites stage V of Calanus helgolandicus was studied at the L4 time-series station in the English Channel from June 2002 to December 2003. AARS activity was explored
as an index of somatic growth in the laboratory as well as in the field by comparison with other methods of measuring growth:
(1) the direct method (Heinle in Chesapeake Sci 7:59–74, 1966), (2) the weight increment (WI) method, (3) the Hirst and Bunker (HB) equation (Limnol Oceanogr 48(5):1988–2010, 2003) and (4) the egg production (EPR) method. AARS activity showed a significant correlation with the direct measurement of growth
in the laboratory (R
2=0.55). However, the correlation was lower for growth assessed either with the WI or the HB approaches in the field (R
2=0.05–0.17). Female AARS activity showed a positive correlation with specific EPR during the reproductive season (R
